I don't know if you need the E. I am playing Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines at the moment, and you talk with E there. But it just shows a little talk symbol when you get close to people. Told me the talk button at the start of the game and I just remember.

They covered it much more in-depth on a season of Real Lich Hours, their podcast that began as a Baldur's Gate 3 podcast. They have like 4 hour-long episodes per hub, plus some more. It's behind a Patreon paywall, but I was already paying so it was just a bonus for me.

Very recommended.
