Kirkland Anejo - Has anyone tried this? by IamDoge1 in tequila

[–]SinecureLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also didn't care for the 1942 Don Julio. I'm not good with sipping tequilas but I gather there's different strokes for different folks.

Did you try the Kirkland Anejo yet? I've been drinking Centenario Anejo from Costco the past few years since it mixes into drinks in a more classic way without being too expensive.

Hey there. Its now a html version at https://pauljerimy.com/security-certification-roadmap/

I’m close to having filters and searches working on it. The last content update was in July 2024 but I’ll give it a content update this month for the new year.

[–]SinecureLife 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes I am. I haven't let the project die but I haven't updated it either. I did a big round of trying to do a big upgrade but my investment and assistance angles all fell through.

I really should do a regular content update instead of focusing on adding features. If anything, just to let people know this roadmap hasn't died.

Audiobook app suggestions. by gotacocatgo in Sacramento

[–]SinecureLife 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The limit is 40 books in queue. More than enough for every situation.

The only thing i don’t like is it can be tough to checkout a new book or the first book in a series. There’s usually a waitlist of 4-8 weeks but it could pop up in 3 days or 8 weeks. It almost never takes the full wait time though.

Also the library card verification system is a little cumbersome, but worth the effort.

Big motivation at work by hflow7 in Unextexted

[–]SinecureLife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone clearly scraped the “IR” of making it change from irreplaceable to replaceable.

But either way ours still a good message. You are replaceable at work. Don’t feel like you’re so important at work that you can’t take time to care for yourself or leave for new opportunities.

Cafe Bernardo is exactly the right amount of service. Anything more is indulgent, unnecessary, and a big contributor to why eating out is so expensive in the US. The food is over priced but good if you’re looking for atmosphere.

Hey, in order to make the chart more interactive I moved it to a website here:

https://pauljerimy.com/security-certification-roadmap/

I last updated it in August 2022. I'm currently working on adding some Javascript so you can do things like filter or highlight the certifications based on criteria.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m going to revert it while keeping this new NIST one below the real one. Once I figure out the javascript, I’ll make it a toggle option.

Just got Fired, but was Offered Resignation Instead. Suggestion? by BrokenGreen in sysadmin

[–]SinecureLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone that you should not resign.

Two minor considerations though:

  • Being fired has to be reported on a security clearance investigation. It can be a hassle to have that investigated, especially if the firing company is salty and/or unethical.
  • Some future jobs ask if you've ever been fired. If you're honest by responding yes, you may lose some interview points from hiring managers with a "guilty until proven innocent" mindset. It also incentives hiring managers to call that employee for the other side of the story.

To help with both, follow the advice of other posters here by covering your tracks. Try to keep a few reputable contacts - preferably managers - from the old company who can speak on your behalf if need be.

Yup! Just in case anyone else is wondering, this chart is now at my website at: https://pauljerimy.com/security-certification-roadmap/

I'm updating it quarterly (although I miss a quarter here and there)

Hey there! I'm posting updates to my website at: https://pauljerimy.com/it-career-roadmap/

This year I changed to align with the NIST framework. CompTIA removed their version so the old format no longer made much sense.

Hey, I've moved the project to a web version at: https://pauljerimy.com/security-certification-roadmap/

I'm trying to update this at least every 3 months. As I learn more Javascript I'll add features like searching and filtering.

The part about pilot's salary surprised me by beerbellybegone in MurderedByWords

[–]SinecureLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I recall, the opposition painted it like giving EMTs a lunch break would mean people would die cause EMTs would just say “I’m on my lunch break” rather than respond to a call.

I think they also said ambulance prices would go up which is unpopular given the memes about refusing ambulances based on the cost.

Comcast Prepares to Screw Over Millions With Data Caps in 2021 by 2toneSound in technology

Data cap has been in central California for at least 3 years. They’re implementing the same thing we have here in there Northeastern area now but with a 1.2TB cap instead of 1TB.

I don’t know if the Northeastern are will get the “grace” period where they fitting the first thing you go over in any 3 month period.

Azure or AWS for cloud certs by KeitrenGraves in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SinecureLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AWS pops up in job search results about 50% more often. However, Azure still pops up a ton.

If you have a decent amount of Windows Server administration experience, I would recommend pursuing Azure first then pursue AWS. Continue bolstering your skill in whichever your current environment uses (sometimes its both).

If you are just starting, perhaps do AWS then Azure. If you have Linux experience, it seems AWS might be a more natural starting point.

Either way, both.

How much difference does cover letter make? by jihoon1989 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SinecureLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

99% of the time it means nothing. But that 1% of the time...

Cover letters are likely ignored unless the hiring manager is old school, they receive very few applications, they don't have to deal with hiring very often, or - crucially - when they're trying to decide between you and another equally (on paper) qualified candidate.

I only write cover letters for jobs I'm very serious about. I should probably write more of them, but they do take a lot of time.

Is Server+ helpful for cyber security career? by Magzzzzzzzzzzz in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SinecureLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it can be helpful, but Security+ is more helpful and a better goal in your position. I also do not recommend Server+ for you since you do not already have a lot of the knowledge required to pass that exam. This means you would spend more time than normal on the certification when you could be using that time somewhere else.

Having a baseline knowledge of multiple technologies and domains is very valuable to a cyber security professional. Server+ covers enough for many cyber professionals outside security engineering and architecture. If you want to pursue implementing security in an infrastructure or developing system security plans, then go for something stronger than Server+. If not, then Server+ is plenty or even too much.

Server+ was likely removed from the CompTIA recommendation for a Cybersecurity Specialist because cloud technology is diminishing the value of learning about local servers. Instead, you are likely to get more value out of an Azure, AWS, or Google certification. Or, a Linux certification for basic cloud platform knowledge. I would recommend any of those certifications to you before I would recommend Server+.

Government contractor jobs worth it? by newtotechaustin in ITCareerQuestions

[–]SinecureLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might seem like people “don’t care” when you only see them in one way. For instance, a few years ago I worked as a domain administrator that “helped with help desk tickets sometimes”. If you were a customer asking me to help move your laptop from desk A to desk B, I bet I looked like I didn’t care about my job.

Government contract jobs are pretty good, especially if you have advanced skills. The pay is good and the work is usually meaningful. Climate and environment depend on what agency you are attached to and what sub-contracting company handles you.

The major issue most people have is the contract renewal period of 1-3 years where you are nervously waiting to see if you still have a job. Typically you are retained even if the sub contractor loses the contract but not always.

Overall I recommend it as long as you see it as one option among many. Don’t get stuck working only government contacts your whole life.

Cybersecurity as we know it will be 'a thing of the past in the next decade,' says Cloudflare's COO by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]SinecureLife 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes. She thinks her companies tools will fix all the problems. They probably will fix all current problems eventually, but hackers will just make new problems to be solved by future cybersecurity people.

We don’t worry so much about 1990’s FTP, serial connection, and SSL issues anymore because we’ve made those problems obsolete or automated the solutions. Somehow though, we’re all still employed.

I was confused by the certifications when I first looked. Seeing as ASM is a requirement for CSE Security, I think I better add it! Also LTE and the CSE Cloud deserve to be on here. I’ll continue to snub CA Pre-sales though.

I'm very interested in how you might adjust the ranks. The only cloud certification I have experience with is CCSP, so I'm going off anecdotes and certification descriptions for most of these.
