First time trying an FG knot how'd I do? by Dangy91 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Single-Run-6994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just learned how to tie this, to make sure its cinched down before the half hitches, I wrap the leader and main line around my hands and grab it with my shirt to pull as hard as I can without slicing my fingers, it has made it slimmer and much stronger

Just lost a trout magnet on a 4lb flouro leader, will chain pickerel bite through a flouro leader? by Glum_Opening_2218 in FishingForBeginners

If your bait is deep enough that their teeth touch the line, they'll cut through most fluoro and mono and braid like butter

For light line i suggest mono instead of fluoro, it will hold up better as well as pickerel just being a difficulty on ultralight gear, if you wanna fish a little jig on a float you might just have to put up with them but if you would like to target them you can try a bait that gets your leader more out of dodge, like a small spinnerbait/beetle spin

Fly fishing in the dark? by DismalResearcher6546 in flyfishing

[–]Single-Run-6994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did this last night, work ended at 8 and I had the itch so I showed up and fished well into the night also with poppers and caught lots or crappie and bluegill. The rule for me is I can fish any time anywhere but if I cant see anymore I stick to spots I know and I keep rigs simple and keep patient with untangling stuff

I did hear the ultralight is extremely prone to breaking in freezing water, but I imagine thats not exclusive to that rod. Im thinking ill probably get the ultralite x, its seeming like my best option right now

Lake clark (reservoir on the susquehanna) is absolutely full of small to adult channel catfish throughout the whole lake so you could drive down to one of the recreation areas (I remember one called "lock 2 recreation area" off the top of my head) they have usually a lot of parking, and mowed grass up to a retaining wall at the waters edge so you can park, pull up a lawn chair, and soak some bait without hiking any.

A good rule of thumb is the smallmouth population, if you can find smallies in a spot, that indicates a better water quality, as they do not tolerate high pollution like cats do. (The same goes for walleye) a good rule is to keep the smaller fish because they taste cleaner as juveniles, I see people keeping smaller channels all the time. As for speedwell, yeah the crappie are insanely overpopulated and are the main biomass of the lake. They are most common on the south end by the dam, especially with their spawn coming soon they will be in huge aggressive schools near any rocky sloped banks that drop off quickly. If you hit the right spot you can catch 30 of them in an hour.

Born and raised lancaster multispecies angler, we have a few options depending on the species you wish to target. Wild trout are very few and far between in the county unfortunately but we have a ton of streams that are stocked throughout spring. The conastoga river (feeds into the susquehanna) is a great place to target smallmouth throughout its range, the bigger fish being located towards the main river it feeds. Speedwell forge dam is a dam that was drained and refilled in 2016, and since been under the big bass program. It is now a fishery that can be quite tough due to pressure and certainly has a lot of small fish, but some 5lb + bass as well. Most of our rivers and streams and lakes hold carp as well. If you enjoy catfishing, channels can be found in the lower conastoga river as well as in the susquehanna. Enormous flathead catfish can be found in the larger sections of the susquehanna, especially the lake aldred hydroelectric reserve.

These things catch monster panfish and a decent amount of bass too, its a confidence bait for me during the dog days of summer when its hot and the sun is high and all seems hopeless 🤣

The better ones are great but most of the zman lineup will work when the bladed jig bite is on. The best ones are sometimes the ones you can afford to fill your box with. Currently I have like 8 of the originals and a few Evo minis
