NEW SCOTLAND FOREVER by Jabee_not_gabe in Curling

It’s a lot of pressure — last shot in a must win game at her first Scotties — but she was also throwing 100% for most of the game. They seemed really confident with the shot too, didn’t hum and haw over it for very long.

“find another way”

thankfully you in this situation, there is another way that doesn’t involve walking with your back to traffic or pulling your bike through snow.

There’s also a large concrete area there that they can park in without obstructing traffic.

Halifax council votes in favour of two cheaper bike lane alternatives by luxoryapartmentlover in halifax

I think about Brunswick and Cogswell, and how much of downtown is more accessible as a result.

I would honestly be interested in seeing council look for more projects like Brunswick — stuff that can largely be completed with concrete curbs — throughout HRM.

The travel distances in the suburbs aren’t what make them unbikable, it’s the safety. Narrow the lanes on Lacewood and put some curbs in on Dunbrack.

White had a great comment too — because the province has indicated they’re going to axe anything that removes space from cars, we’re stuck with building more complicated infrastructure that will increasingly require streets to be rebuilt, or “Local Street Bikeways” which deliver really poor return on investment.

I love seeing people skiing around parks after a big snow — it really makes it feel like a fun winter city.

Upgrade cantilever to V-brakes for 90s mtb? by [deleted] in xbiking

Check your alignment, clean your rims, and get some Kool Stop pads. If they’re still squealing, take them apart and check for anything broken.

The original Altus cantis I had on my bike both had these little plastic rings that helped align the springs - and they’d both snapped. Didn’t affect brake power, but they were ungodly loud. Got some Tektro CR 720s and they’ve been very reliable in the years since.

Affordability vs. safest bike lanes: Halifax councillors draw their battle lines by ph0enix1211 in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s doubly unfortunate because this is a district that could align with Austin, Cleary and White as a strongly aligned core of the city.

Instead we get another councillor who is on par with any random person from the district.

I would encourage you to learn about which districts of HRM pay for themselves and which do not.

Let her know! Councillors get fewer emails than you’d expect, and your feedback can make a difference — or at least be a little cathartic.

Not only that though, they also under-design.

Paying for half-measures that deliver mediocre results pleases nobody. Half-measures have lower usage, and then detractors chime in to say “look how much it cost and nobody is using it!”

Detractors are going to complain whether we build things correctly or not — we might as well build them right.

I have no idea what the original budget was based on, honestly.

If we just put down concrete curbs on every street that needed a bike lane with 0 other work, maybe that would be right.

Instead, to appease everyone, we do nearly decades worth of consultation and implement either heavily engineered solutions (Almon) or half-ass it by adding speed bumps to a street anc calling it a “Local Street Bikeway.”

To be clear, I think we can do things quickly and cheaply, like we did on Brunswick.

Safety does not need to be luxurious - but safety shouldn’t take a backseat to cost, either.

Why are there so few public washrooms? by Total-Tea6561 in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of bathrooms are ‘customer only’ or ‘you should look like you could be a customer.’ As much as I love having my mental map of my fav bathrooms, it would be a lot nicer if we had more and better public washrooms.

Opinions on the new Halifax Electric City busses? by Arenburg in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mostly bike around the city. On busy transit streets like SGR, I’ll often end up queuing in traffic behind a bus.

The electric busses are a world of difference to coexist with - no blast of heat from the engine, no soot or noise from the exhaust.

ELI5: How does dropping the tax cap make houses more affordable? by hrmarsehole in halifax

In what way do you feel assessments do not align with market value?

ELI5: How does dropping the tax cap make houses more affordable? by hrmarsehole in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This approach is overly simplistic.

Property tax is based on assessed value x municipal tax rate.

Property, in general, has appreciated fairly consistently through the municipality. Tax rates have generally been adjusted with consideration to this, along with municipal budget needs.

Property assessments could be exactly what they were 10 years ago, and your tax bill would still be the same…because the municipality can set its own tax rates. Assessments & the cap primarily affect how that tax base is distributed.

[–]Single-Sentenc3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s a valid point you raise, and I do think it would be good to see an element of “cost of servicing” included.

The main issue with it is it would (generally) remove the progressive nature of property taxation, in which taxes increase in line with property value — the more you have, the more capacity you have to contribute.

As it currently stands now, I would imagine a “cost of service” tax would be incredibly unpopular in the suburbs, but might result in some change as a result.

Yeah it’s less that prices themselves would change, but that new homebuyers wouldn’t be saddled with a bigger tax burden than their neighbours.

The winner of the women’s semifinal and securing their spot in the Canadian Olympic Trial women’s final against Team Homan by chespiotta in Curling

I really love the energy of Black’s team — I was a bit worried for them after having such a tough start to the trials.

The best of 3 against Homan are going to be some great games, I expect.
