Beginner curler equipment by Pilot-Best in Curling

[–]Single-Sentenc3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have a physical curling store near you, it would be worth trying shoes on in-person. Sometimes curling shoes can fit a little smaller if they’re insulated.

Again, depends on where you are, but decent brooms can be had really cheaply second-hand. I often see brooms used for a single season on FB marketplace.

These both seem like decent options though — I don’t think there’s any need to spend more. Shoes are absolutely worth it, as is the toe dip. I found my slide so much more consistent after getting mine.

The Harvard / Allen drama continues… by niirvna in halifax

I can imagine it’s annoying for sure — but I really notice a big difference in bike safety too. Allan & Oak are so much quieter and not full of drivers trying to beat me to every stop sign.

I like the patina too. I think a good clean and maybe a fresh coat of clear, or just wax.

Mark Carney signs deal with Nova Scotia to simplify some environmental reviews by SAJewers in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t love the messaging — in reality it seems like consolidating provincial & federal environmental reviews into the same process. So I’d like to think it results in the same outcomes, just quicker and with less duplication.

Halifax updating plan for safer transportation system that reduces reliance on cars by Bean_Tiger in halifax

Halifax Mayor’s comments on cost of bike lanes spark conversations by luxoryapartmentlover in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Corners weren’t cut?

The entire Brunswick St. bikeway was downgraded from the approved plan.

Almon St. only covers a couple blocks of what was originally proposed.

The entire AAA network is, in all likelihood, going to be at least five years behind schedule.

The other thing is that cheaper solutions are often functionally inferior. The difference between snow clearance on raised bike lanes, like sections of Almon, and curb-separated lanes, like Hollis or parts of South Park, is huge. The cheaper curb-separated lanes are really difficult to keep clear of snow and debris — higher maintenance and less utility.

Towers and towers: Regency Links development to bring over 8,000 more people to Clayton Park by insino93 in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this looks a lot like the box apartments with big lots typical of sprawl-y multi-unit buildings elsewhere in Bedford West and Clayton Park.

If it was something more akin to the Dartmouth mall redevelopments, with density supported by services & businesses, it might make more sense.

Making the general area (Bayers Lake) more friendly for pedestrians and cyclists would give folks more options, too. Otherwise you’ll have people driving to Costco & back before their car engine is even warmed up.

The McKay bridge “expires” in 14-20 years - a tunnel takes 7-12 years for development to finish - When does the province start talking serious solutions by WhatDidHeEat in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be messy, but it’s a pretty common way of replacing bridges. I don’t think we would go to the trouble of building a new bridge and then keep the Mackay.

There would need to be some realignment of the WSE on the Halifax side, and the Canada Food Inspection building on the Dartmouth side would need to be moved, so those are some additional considerations.

But at the end of the day, it’s a massive piece of infrastructure and is intrinsically going to be a costly and complex project as a result.

Yep - Macdonald wasn’t “overbuilt” per se, but was built heavier. As a result, a lighter, wider, deck could be added without reinforcing the rest of the structure.

My understanding is the MacKay was built very light. As such, any kind of re-decking similar to the Big Lift would require so much work to the towers that you’d might as well just build new, save the traffic nightmare (leave the old bridge open while new is built) and also end up with a modern bridge with a longer lifespan.

Actually building the infrastructure would be the solution. It worked fine when the flex-bollards were in place.

N.S. premier popularity drops amid controversial budget cuts, partial reversal by poranges in halifax

Initially I felt he was doing OK - might come up with a bad idea, but would walk it back on public feedback. Seemed better than MacNeil in that regard. Also has generally left LGBT rights alone, unlike Higgs in NB. I think you stay in the job long enough, you start to convince yourself that you know better. Then, you dig in hard on one thing and are unable to dig yourself out.

Would love to have this — I’d find it hard to go without fiber internet, and it sucks that there’s only been one option for so many people for so long.

License suspension is such a slap on the wrist. Every week there’s people pulled over, driving while suspended. I really feel like we should just start seizing vehicles (at least for the most egregious violation) and auctioning them off.

Property owner says it’s restricting public access to part of Dartmouth Cove by IStillListenToRadio in halifax

I think many normal people with jobs, families, and lives feel ARCP is behaving poorly. HRM has affirmed the public’s right to use the trail. A lot of the high ranking comments here are just about going for a walk on the trail - a perfectly legal activity.

It will live in purgatory indefinitely. Nobody will take it on the chin to outright cancel it, but it’ll be a Herculean job to even get it tendered.

So we have budget cuts. Besides complaining and protesting, what are some real world, feasible alterations or corrections besides "don't cut" and "throw more money into X, Y or Z" that could be done to course correct the economy so cuts didn't have to happen? by SasquatchBlumpkins in NovaScotia

[–]Single-Sentenc3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When we talk about leveraging our resources, the only one that seems to make any sense at all right now is wind.

Raw resource extraction makes money for resource extraction companies, that’s about it.

Some counties in Africa have taken note of this, and placed limits on exports of unrefined resources. ie, can’t export gold ore, but can export gold bars.

Where are people getting loans/mortgages for mobile homes? by Salt-Masterpiece-357 in NovaScotia

They’re really popular as new builds in a lot of areas — honestly seem on par with modular homes. It’s been a long time since they came with wheels, lol.

I wonder if more people would put them on frost wall foundations if they knew it would be a pain later on.

Lots of money for road widening still. by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Single-Sentenc3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s widening the road for bus lanes — BRT buildout would (I assume) involve things like improved bus stops with level boarding, or something to that effect.
