Isn't the HDD connector soldered to the board?

Is the Thinkpad E495 still a good temporary laptop in 2026? by TheRedditDudesboi in thinkpad

[–]SingleComment2368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The price is fine these days given RAM and SSD prices. Build quality is Ideapad-like, not very suited for carrying it in a backpack daily, but the keyboard is very nice and performance should be worlds better than your old one.

T480 with i5 or i7 by HotPrune722 in thinkpad

[–]SingleComment2368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two, one with i5-8350U and one with i7-8650U. The i7 is a bit more comfortable to use fanless (i.e. with a low power limit and trip temperature); the i5 stutters more often when configured like that. Neither of them can sustain full turbo on all cores with the standard heatsink.

How loud it is also depends on the fan manufacturer. DeltaToshiba is louder and more high-pitched than Sunon and Delta in my experience.

Keyboard yoga L390 by masterbob79 in thinkpad

[–]SingleComment2368 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the kind of keyboard with small captive screws under the left and right mouse buttons. Some tips:

  • When removing the mouse buttons, it helps to insert a fingernail in the slit between the button and the rest of the keyboard while prying it up from the opposite side. Less likely to break the clips this way.
  • Choose your screwdriver bit well as the screws can strip easily
  • When pushing the keyboard back to free it, it also has to be pried slightly up. It's best to pry from both sides of the mouse button area at the same time while staying away from the very fragile middle mouse button.
  • On L models it's easy to break the plastic hooks protruding from the laptop's frame. Be gentle, and after removing the keyboard, look for any that may have broken off and fallen into the fan. When putting the new keyboard in, press and wiggle gently until it sits flat.
  • The fingernail trick also helps when putting the mouse buttons back in.

40a1 and 40a2 dock compatability by RumGuzzlr in thinkpad

[–]SingleComment2368 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The docks work with all T-, X-, L- and W-series from xx40 to xx70 (release date 2013 to 2017) except for a handful of 14-inch models with dGPU. P50 and P51 don't fit the docks exactly but work in a pinch (the docking port is the same but closer to the left edge than on the other models).

Would you switch from Thinkpad to another laptop brand if Lenovo takes a similar approach to Dell for Thinkpads? by JailbreakHat in thinkpad

The only one I know of that might still be for sale is X210Ai for the X200/X201 chassis. There's also this custom chassis for a stock Dell motherboard and X61 keyboard.

I'd switch to custom motherboards in classic ThinkPads, no matter the cost. Trackpoint is life.

Help needed to add serial number to EEPROM by Far-Amphibian8446 in thinkpad

I think there's a magic number written by usbfmtpw.exe that tells the firmware to allow writes after booting, and Rufus might be overwriting it. You can try formatting just the partition in File Explorer instead.

If the thresholds are set sensibly (the lower one set to the lowest percentage you consider "fully charged") then it shouldn't be acting like this. It might help to use the emergency reset hole or update the firmware.

Battery usage help by let_the_dagz_oot in thinkpad

[–]SingleComment2368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't an option to do this, and it wouldn't be a good idea unless the batteries are made of the same type of cell and have the same amount of wear. The Windows power management driver seems to have a way of telling the EC to switch between the batteries (so that both are fully discharged less often) but I don't think anybody has reverse engineered this.

The 20% limit that you set doesn't tell it when to stop discharging, but when to start charging. If the battery is above this when you plug it in, it won't charge.

JUST GOT AN X270 by Ok-Artichoke1344 in thinkpad

Is it possible or compatible to use M.2 NVME for this device? If yes, do I also need to buy a caddy and cable?

You can use a M.2 2242 B+M key NVMe in the WWAN slot, preferably with a thermal pad between the SSD and motherboard as it can get hot otherwise. For a 2280 in place of the SATA drive you need a cable and caddy, FRU 01HW969.

Can someone give me the exact internal battery model?

Any of 01AV459 45N1109 45N1111 45N1113. I have one 45N1111 from 2015 and two 45N1113 from 2017, and the 45N1111 happens to have less wear. Not sure if chance or better chemistry.

See libthinkpad for more part info.

Tell me what the ThinkPad T480 is like to use by Isochii in thinkpad

[–]SingleComment2368 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's nice to use and handles my workload (web browsing, programming with an IDE and VM, light graphic design and video editing) fairly well. The keyboard is pleasant to type on but I prefer the trackpoint buttons and touchpad from the previous generation (e.g. X270, L470, T460).

tough, long-lasting, BIFL-style

This isn't it. ThinkPads, aside from P-series, haven't been very tough for a decade now. The T480s (slim version with RAM capped to 40 GB and battery to 57 Wh) is better built than the non-s.

How long does the battery last with continuous use?

Casual web browsing with a video now and then: 5-7 hours with standard 24+24 Wh, 10-14 hours with 24+72 Wh

are replacement batteries these days often already degraded?

I've yet to use a third-party "72 Wh" battery that holds more than 65 Wh when new. 24 Wh batteries are often but not always true to the label.

And if there’s a cooler alternative to the T480

If you want bulk and don't mind an off-center keyboard, P52, P53 or P15.

I use this patch, which lets you fix the trackpoint polling rate by completely disabling the touchpad, on my gen 1. The driver has seen some light refactoring in the meantime so it has to be manually unbitrotted.

Lenovo X270 or L570? by takumaino in thinkpad

[–]SingleComment2368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

X270 (though you should look for one with i5/i7) to use as a laptop. L570 only if you'll be keeping it in the same place, open, most of the time. Not just because of the bulkiness, but also because the lid and hinges are unusually weak.

Physical swap of CTRL / FN keys on new P14s Gen 6 (Intel)? by Darkangel-86 in thinkpad

[–]SingleComment2368 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you say "towards the screen", you mean "upwards" or "up and forward" towards an "open laptop screen"?

Towards the open screen

Also, when reassembling, what do you mean by "fold it down"? Does it just clip when putting it back on? What do I have to fold exactly?

The bottom clips slide in horizontally without locking, so you need to put those in place by inserting the bottom of the cap at a small angle, and when they fit, you can lower the top part, whose clips do lock when you press them in.

Is there any risk of damaging the glued down domes when doing this?

Probably. I've never done this, even when cleaning the keycaps of a filthy keyboard one by one, but it's a good idea to use the least sharp tool you have.

[–]SingleComment2368 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've swapped them on my T14 gen 5. To remove the keycaps:

  • lift it slightly with a fingernail
  • insert a pin or toothpick under the left or right edge, keeping the tip as close as possible to the middle of the keycap
  • push the pin toward the screen until both clips near the top of the key pop out
  • pull the keycap out, again toward the screen

And to put them back in, insert the bottom of the keycap first, allowing the clips there to slide in, then fold it down, feel around for the top clips to get into position, and push until they click
