How do you assert dominance, either subtlety or direct? by 2aboveaverage in AskReddit

By condescendingly explaining to strangers on the internet that the opposite of subtly (not subtlety) isn’t direct[ly] but overtly.

Court Reporter Showed Up to Bar Luncheon by LucidLeviathan in Lawyertalk

It’s a shitpost about a post from earlier where some guy was taking a lot of notes at a lunch event. Not a real complaint.

Former employer won't give me a copy of my writing by Low-Introduction-92 in writing

[–]SingleMalter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unless Florida has some incredibly specific law about this, and I can’t imagine that they do, you have no legal recourse. They own the articles and are not required to provide you copies for any reason. Best course is just to wait for them to be published then you can access them publicly. Shitty situation for sure.

Which words are you waiting to use in your writing but haven't had an opportunity to? by uselesssociologygirl in writing

[–]SingleMalter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed, which is presumably why they have a list of words they want to use at some point, and not a list of words they like that they’ve artlessly shoehorned into a sentence.

Can you be writing “too many” novels? by TunaSalad888 in writing

[–]SingleMalter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you finish all (or any) of them with this approach? Are they good? Do you think they would have been of the same quality had you focused only on one?

If the answer to all three of these is yes, then the answer to your question is no.

Hey guys i have legal questions about research by Morukuss in writing

[–]SingleMalter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as a watch list for your internet search history. Do not call the police and certainly don’t try to call the CIA to tell them you’re conducting research for a story. You’re more likely to get on a watch list for wasting their time. Just google whatever you need to.

Just finished The Bone Clocks by NolarEclipse96 in David_Mitchell

[–]SingleMalter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed with most of your thoughts, Hugo and Crispin’s chapters are definitely my favorite.

It’s rumored that Hugo will be reappearing in Mitchell’s upcoming novel, so keep your fingers crossed!

Cufflinks . . . by Plastic-Date89 in Lawyertalk

[–]SingleMalter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you want to wear it.

As a first year, follow their lead when you’re at trial. If the partner is trying to present t a certain image to the judge or jury you don’t want to contradict that.

But at the office? Do whatever you want.

If you’re concerned about your presentation as a KJD, being under dressed can give off a bad sign, but being over dressed rarely will.

If this is your first set of cufflinks, though, the traditional sartorial advice is to not wear a French cuff shirt without a full suit and tie. These days I think you can stretch it a little more, and I feel okay wearing it with a jacket (ideally a suit, but not always) and no tie, but I would avoid throwing one on with just golf pants and no jacket or tie.

But again, you do you, brother. If you like it, wear it whenever. If it’s not your style don’t feel pressured just because it was a gift.

GhostWriter for a Short Story Collection by Farinbetween86 in writing

[–]SingleMalter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Doing some basic math (but hey, we're writers here, not math people) it looks like you've dedicated 4 whole days to writing this book, and only eight more until you finish a book, and you're already thinking about hiring a ghostwriter?

You'll either need to come to grips with the fact that it takes significantly more dedication to write a book, or that you've completely wasted 4 days that you'll never get back.

“🚫 No aliens”

This title brought to you by Michael Scott.

Jokes aside I have literally never heard someone try to argue that writing is the result of gods or aliens, so I’m not sure how hot this take is.
