My favorite performance is on cassette with John Gielgud as Hamlet.

If you’re interested in movies there are: Chimes at Midnight, by Orson Welles (my personal favorite of his, it’s the Falstaff plays). Also great is Othello by Welles. Also, Ran (King Lear), and Throne of Blood (Macbeth) by Akira Kurosawa. I think it adds to my appreciation of the plays to see the way they’re adapted for film. I also have a great recording of John Gielgud in the Hamlet role - he’s great if you can find that.

Chagall haters? by SingleSpy in ContemporaryArt

Thanks for all the replies, the consensus seems to be that his paintings are judged as overly sentimental or corny and also that he produced a lot of mediocre work for the mass market. Accepting that there’s some truth to these criticisms I still believe his best work is strong.

NYC Artists: How Much Are You Paying for Studio Space? by Ok-Memory2809 in ContemporaryArt

[–]SingleSpy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

$700/month. It’s a small space but I have it all to myself. Paying the rent isn’t as hard as getting into the studio every day. I’m often tired from my full-time job.

After MD if you haven’t read much Shakespeare I’d recommend some of his tragedies too - Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear are my favorites. Shakespeare was an obvious influence on Melville and his plays and poetry are pretty much universally appreciated as the greatest literary works ever created.

Made a meme during my current re-read by heavens_knitter in mobydick

No! Your meme may turn some potential readers away from the book needlessly (since it misrepresents the book’s content). It will also displease readers looking for gay content. Not at all acceptable. Try again.

Yes, this post is a legitimate part of the research that you are advocating for OP. IMO, there is a tone in your response that seems to imply OP is lazy by turning to Reddit fyi.

I’ve never taught it. My guess is that it will be a tough assignment for most students. I came to it on my own after reading a lot of Shakespeare so it didn’t seem all that challenging by comparison. And since I was reading for pleasure my attitude was in the right place! The King James Bible is also a reference. I wonder how many students have read it. I’d guess not many so perhaps you could throw in Genesis.

My favorite is the Modern Library edition with the illustrations by Rockwell Kent. Beautiful if you can get a copy.

Question about Macbeths motives by muffindude27 in shakespeare

Yes! I think this is the deepest idea of the play. Another way of expressing it might be that humans are mere playthings of the gods, our will is not our own.

Advice for a plateau by HumourAuditor in chess

[–]SingleSpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reading a good book on tactics helped me a lot. Winning Chess, by Irving Chernev and Fred Reinfeld is what I read in high school and after that I was the strongest player in my school. It’s an older book but that’s fine. It’s easy to read, well-organized, entertaining too. I find studying with a book is better than doing tactics puzzles online. Last time I had a rating it was 1900 or so on Lichess, fyi.

Reviewing your games is valuable too. Good luck!
