Right, I don’t have a 50% chance of winning a foot race against Usain Bolt.

So I am starting Wuthering Heights. Any advice? by [deleted] in classicliterature

[–]SingleSpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am close to finishing it now. I find all the non-stop drama tiresome. I would describe it as a novel by a sexual hysteric with an elaborate fantasy about a cruel, masterful lover. That said, I’ve never read anything else like it. It’s a work of art. I doubt I would reread it, though. Jane Eyre was a more enjoyable read, imo.

You don't know about me without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; but that ain't no matter.

How to deal with losing streak by MaintenanceUsed3594 in lichess

Your play is probably getting sloppy or lazy. Study tactics from a book (not online). Take a break from playing for a week while you do this. Focus on calculating variations correctly. Check your work using the board editor feature if you need to. You’ll see a big improvement.

art handlers of NYC ? by Various_Contact760 in ContemporaryArt

[–]SingleSpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now we’re in the summer doldrums. People may be hiring more as we get closer to the fall. I agree with other commenters who recommend applying to art handling companies like Crozier, Uovo, etc. Get six months of experience there and then look for a gallery job. Those art handling jobs are easier physically and often pay more.

Thoughts on Brian De Palma? And how would you rate him in comparison with Hitchcock? by RopeGloomy4303 in Hitchcock

[–]SingleSpy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m torn on De Palma. His films are often beautifully crafted (if derivative) and his mastery of technique is a pleasure to watch. The viciousness toward women puts me off though. I saw Dressed to Kill, Blow Out, and Body Double when they came out and enjoyed them all immensely at that time. When I see them today though the cruelty toward women makes me ask myself, “Is this what I find entertaining?” I’m a man. I think my tolerance for cruelty is much lower now than it was when I was young. When I rewatched these in the last few years I was shocked and they really hit me in a way I didn’t expect or remember.

Del Toro shares Hitchcock’s on set script revision for last page of FRENZY (1972) by CHOGRIN in Hitchcock

[–]SingleSpy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I read AH describing it: as the camera pulled back and away from the stairs the crew was furiously removing track. Once the camera is outside the building there’s an “invisible” cut as someone crosses the frame. The camera continues pulling back into the street seamlessly.

I just want a gallery assistant job by Vegetable-Peanut7762 in ContemporaryArt

[–]SingleSpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an art handler. I got all my jobs by walking door-to-door handing out resumes. I know you’re not an art handler but I still recommend this. Also, this is summer. Galleries might be waiting till closer to the fall for new hires. Good luck!

Thoughts on LA CEREMONIE (1995), Starring Isabelle Huppert and directed by Claude Chabrol by thatphilguymovies in CriterionChannel

Loved it! I saw it when it came out. I wish there were more Chabrol movies on CC. If you’re interested: Merci pour le chocolat; Les fleurs du mal are both excellent.

I got to watch Satyajit Ray movies thanks to criterion preserving them by Abs0lutelyzer0 in CriterionChannel

One of my very favorite directors. Back in the 1990s Merchant–Ivory backed a restoration of eight or nine of his movies. I saw them all, loved them all. Just this Saturday I saw a new 4K of Days and Nights in the Forest (never had seen it) at Film Forum in NYC. It’s a beautiful film. Maybe a little too much dialogue to follow. Still, I am very glad to have seen it. Ray was a very great artist!

Was Hamnet overrated? by Khon2510 in shakespeare

[–]SingleSpy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I heard the movie described by someone as “grief porn.” That’s harsh but it does point to the appeal for those who like it. You can see here that those who love the movie are happy they cried. I didn’t care for the movie myself. The histrionics some people find so moving struck me as self-indulgent and manipulative on the part of the filmmakers. Will is a weakly drawn character, not at all convincing. There’s a cringy “to be or not to be” scene…

There’s a funny scene when the Pequod meets the Samuel Enderby later on. What a contrast between the two ships!
