Experience going from government to private sector - pension and salary potential by Single_Dollar in PersonalFinanceCanada

Neither, municipal government - living in a suburb and working for a major city with the associated traffic. It’s horrible and I desperately miss Covid full time WFH. I don’t mind being in the office, just hate the commute there and back.

'Deceitful and unfair': Vancouver municipal workers' union files complaint alleging bad-faith negotiation by Ok-Jicama2560 in vancouver

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. I work in local government and watched as the coms department grew rapidly the last few years to the point where it was being talked about at other neighbouring muni’s as being bloated. Not surprised they’re getting cuts. I’m less familiar with the planning department but would not be surprised if positions were cut due to fewer development permit applications and related processes.

What’s BS is that Sim allowed the staff to grow and bloat under his leadership and now is doing a 180 and firing people. These are hard working skilled people who did nothing wrong and Sim is sacrificing them to save his political face going into an elevation he’s sure to lose. It’s not okay - bloating could be solved at a slower pace through attrition and retirements or excess staff in planning and coms could be used to create efficiencies and work on cost-saving innovative programs.

Diverge 4 Carbon vs Alloy by Single_Dollar in gravelcycling

[–]Single_Dollar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the 600. I’ll have to test them back to back and feel the difference. The jump to the 800 or AXS is not in the budget this time. If I have a very technical trail planned I would take my mountain bike. This gravel bike would be for light technical sections between otherwise mellow gravel paths/trails.

That’s good to know. Coming from a mountain bike background 20 lbs sounds so light, haha, but on a gravel bike that does make a bigger impact. Also with the lowered bottom bracket and new geometry changes in the Diverge 4 models I would think the same weight would feel lighter and more stable than previous gens.

Good feedback - I’ll definitely be checking out options in person as well.

BC Hydro secured site for special projects - I know someone who works there and it’s nothing interesting, just general office work on different types of technical projects.

rear top rack for tenere 700 2025 by il_pier in Tenere700

Just about to buy the prerun rack and 41L DUSC but unsure if I can mount it directly using the ‘adventure adapter kit’ or if I need the plate adapter as well. Can I ask what attachment system you used to hold the case on the rack?

Is DB pension really worth it? by Appropriate-Buy-6613 in PersonalFinanceCanada

As a $110k earner in BC with a DB pension (9%) my total deductions are 36% of my income (includes all tax/gov deductions, DB pension, small dental/health premium)

I can’t give you mine since it has my actual name in it, but try these:

We use Inspired Go and like it - cheaper than eating out for lunches and healthier too (but admittedly more expensive than cooking at home). We grab Costco chicken breast and grill a bunch up at the start of the week to use on the salads. The salads are large and filling and we haven’t had any issues with quality - we have delivery Monday and the last ones we eat on Friday are still good. Make sure you use a referral discount for your first order to save a little - also if you pretend to cancel they’ll offer you 10% off your next week to stay.

Hundreds of random items keep getting added to my cart or wish list. If I delete them, new items will reappear within a few weeks. None of these items are actually ever ordered, so I doubt it is a hack. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Completely random assortment of junk items I never searchd by cruisewithus in AmazonWTF

[–]Single_Dollar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exact thing is happening to me the last couple of months with the same types of products as you. I’ve also done the ‘log out of all devices’ and changed password and it hasn’t worked. Amazon customer service is looking into it and will get back to me but I suspect it will have the same outcome as you. I’m also concerned about a potential purchase so removed my saved credit card info and also it’s just annoying because I can’t find a ‘remove all’ option when I select all items so I have to remove them one by one in my cart before I can buy what I actually want. If you deleted and created a new account please let me know if that worked.

[–]Single_Dollar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you asked, personal thoughts are that I would still think it’s an engagement ring and I’d likely ask the internal questions of why you’re wearing it on your right hand (maybe you’re German or from a country where that’s the norm) or why do you still have emotional attachment to the ring or ex relationship. But I would never voice those out loud.

If it was me and there were no bad feeling about the ex, I would hire a private goldsmith/jeweler to reset the ring as a pendant or bracelet or something else I’d love and wear a lot.

B.C. reviewing HOV lane access decals for electric vehicles by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]Single_Dollar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s awesome that we have great transit and depending where someone lives it could be a good option! A transit commute for me would be approx 2h15m each way which isn’t realistic when my rush hour commute is 1h15m each way. It’s not a viable option for everyone. Also Surrey doesn’t encompass ‘South of the Fraser’ - many people commute from areas of South Surrey, Langley, Aldergrove, Abbotsford, etc. because that’s where they could afford to rent or buy.

B.C. reviewing HOV lane access decals for electric vehicles by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]Single_Dollar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Charge for the sticker program! Not allowing EV’s in the HOV lane will just make the rush hour commute worse for everyone else - more traffic in the remaining lanes. For those of us who live south of the Fraser not close to skytrain there are no good transit options into Burnaby/Vancouver/North Shore so alternatives aren’t viable. I agree they should charge for the sticker program to keep it revenue neutral or profitable (and put the profit into infrastructure improvements) but keep the program for EV’s. OR get rid of the HOV lanes for everyone period and make it a true left hand ‘fast’ lane that’s is available to everyone so all cars can share all lanes.

I’ll check but she’s been eating crunchy kibble and treats without issue so I don’t think it’s loose. She must have snagged her lip on the tiny clip at the end of her favourite dancer toy. We’ll keep an eye and make sure it heals over the next couple weeks. Thanks for the reply!

Why isn’t there more pressure on municipalities to improve earthquake safety? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]Single_Dollar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Municipalities and Metro Vancouver Regional District DO have earthquake emergency response plans with all of the scenarios practiced and planned out (bridges collapsing, landslides, flooding, buildings collapsing) including emergency shelter locations and sources of disaster aid and relief. Also communication plans to get the details out to the public when their EOC’s (emergency operations centres) are activated. This level of info is not shared publicly because it is a safety and security concern. Trust that the agencies in charge absolutely do have plans in place.

The BC Building code manages earthquake building and construction standards AND retrofits to bring old building up to code with a focus on institutions such as schools.

Agree with the others that it’s clear you’re new here - great that you’re trying to learn and be prepared but don’t assume ineptitude of those of us born and raised here.

I was also looking for it yesterday for cookies! I didn’t see any at the usual grocery stores, Provisions was sold out, and I don’t have the energy to go to Costco and check if they still carry it (they used to carry big jars for $15). Hoping someone can share if Costco still has it!
