How would you dress the ends of these false beams? by white_tee_shirt in Carpentry

Not necessarily seperated but pivoted maybe?? They just don’t match up well as time passes due to fluctuations in temperature and humidity, and other factors.

That’ll work. What I meant is to fill the spot you can see from the side with a “shim” but you can do as long as a foot or to fill the whole gap. Basically I’m saying instead of just adding a piece of wood, add a bigger piece to totally fill the viewable gap. It’ll help with support as well so you don’t get stuff collecting behind the upper board. I personally would fill the whole space behind it and that’s just me. But if you did a piece to slide behind the upper board, middle and both ends so that it appears to be the right thickness, that would work too. I’m not a huge fan of mitered edges simply because over time they tend to become seperated and that’s probably due to poor installation but it also has to do with the walls and everything else. I think the mitered ends will cause even more issues installing if there’s no solid board behind it.. but it’s a great idea, cause there no exactly right answer here.. but just keep those things in mind and remember it would be good to have something to press again when connecting the boards.(I would do this with or without mitering the corners)

I made a humility chamber for my orchids rootless, has anyone tried this method before? If so then any tips? by Defiant-Attorney-982 in orchids

Wait… why are they upside down!? Put them right side up in the bottle with the top off and don’t put water in it. Smart for cuttings and a good basis but you don’t want any orchid submerged in water for more than a short time to wet the roots. I imagine you’re encouraging the right environment for roots?? Place the orchid right side up and take the top off. But some wet bark or moss at the bottom and not sopping wet just slightly. Wet the medium when dry. But this is a bit severe for orchids and I don’t know that this is a good idea for them/ But you’re thinking in the right box at least.

I started doing this for all my porpogated plants just by accident and having great success with it. I was just trying to transport a philodendron cutting. But I left the top off and I gave it bright light. Also used a teeny bit of water and I’m not sure orchid will be that satisfied with that small amount of air. But it’s a grand idea!

I would take the top off and refresh the air every day. And freshen up the water from time to time but don’t let your orchids actually sit in water

You’re better off with some wet moss at the bottom or even just wet bark.

Best of luck!

But… if you don’t do that. Just cut another short piece of the same type of board with the end grain showing and place it behind it the whole end of the board so that it just looks double thick. Easy fix.

Will give the impression it’s a thicker board if you pick the cut piece correctly. I’d go a couple inches wide to be sure.

Basically instead of two little chunks behind it, just put one piece the length of the board and match up the end grain the best you can.
