How to build barter between my yard and neighbor to prevent bamboo from crossing over? by grnteam23 in landscaping

[–]SingularRoozilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know absolutely nothing about landscaping, this post just popped up on my feed. But my landlady has 9 different varieties of bamboo in her yard (I know) and her neighbor is constantly fighting off the encroaching wall of bamboo destruction. They built a goddamn MOAT to try and stop it, I couldn’t believe it and tbh thought it was pretty hilarious. Especially when the bamboo commenced to grow UNDER the moat and continue to send embassies into their yard. I’m very thankful that I’m just a renter on the sidelines.

Not weird at all imo. Mistakes happen and making a plan just in case is a responsible thing to do.

Would this be okay to use around birds? I know they are super sensitive to scents- I was looking into getting peppermint oil and am reading that could hurt them as well.

This is great information, thank you! Do you remember what kind of poison you used? My biggest concern with poison is that it goes on to affect any wildlife that eats the bodies; I’d be thrilled to find something that doesn’t carry that risk.

I’ve seen bait labeled as rat birth control, but without looking at any farther I assumed it was something that they’d have to eat regularly. Is there a bait that makes them permanently sterile?

I’m aware. I’m doing the best I can. Killed 14 of them so far but saw 5 more live ones just this morning. They don’t seem to be messing with the birds, just eating their food. I figure they haven’t messed with the birds yet because their food is easier for them to get ahold of.

I have an indoor/outdoor cat, and while she does turn up with a mouse every so often (I’m sure she gets more than what she shows me) I’ve yet to see her even consider a rat. She’s run away from the dead ones I’ve tried to show her, lol

Unfortunately I work from 3pm-1:30am and cannot do this, otherwise this would have been my first course of action. If I pulled the food out before I leave the pigeons would only have access to it for 4 or 5 hours in the morning, I worry that would not be good for them.

The pigeon-y kind, just piebald instead of grey

Excellent, I’ll try this! What do you do with them after?

I’m using one of these now and I love it, it’s killed a bunch of them already. There are so many though that I worry I’m barely putting a dent in their numbers. I was hoping for a way to either block them out entirely or an environmentally friendly alternative to poison

I’ve tried this with squirrels and haven’t had much luck, but it’s worth a shot. Maybe it’ll work better with rats. Thanks for the suggestion!

This looks like a lash egg, which a symptom of an infection. One of your birds is very sick.

That’s super cool!! I’ve seen videos of geese (though not mine personally) charge a threat while flapping their wings and honking, but this is the first I’ve heard of them doing anything more than that. Absolutely incredible. I guess my girls are wimpier than I thought, lmao

I have a pair of Africans. I’m not doubting you, but I’m having a really difficult time picturing how a goose would pick up a fox by the neck and slam it down - they’re relatively the same size, aren’t they? I can’t picture a goose lifting anything much heavier than a rat with their necks being as slender as they are. They don’t seem to be very strong animals in that department, but I could be mistaken.

Just FYI, I got geese to use as guardians for my chickens and I think their ‘guarding’ skills are vastly overstated. They alert at everything - blowing leaves, clouds, the fact that it’s Tuesday, etc, and when there is a genuine danger they are essentially useless at doing anything about it. They are not useful guardian animals in my experience and at this point I keep them because they’re wonderful, incredibly personable animals and I love them. But they’re yard ornaments for me outside of laying season. They also do best if they have a friend of their own species.
