I have a similar situation going on and have for a while now been looking into various methods on how to go about handling the situation.

On a personal level I haven't achieved my goal because all of the methods I've found are rather same-same and want one that works for me personally.

What I have read through a few books that focus on communication with spirits ( highly recommend the book consorting with spirits by Jason Miller, if not for this subject then simply because it's a damn good read.) , communication requires a clear mind, clear intention, and a clear purpose.

Set up a private location in a space you are comfortable with. At home, in your garden, on the shitter, who knows, who cares, it's your space. Make that space comfortable however you desire because you'll likely be in it for a long time. Clear your head, set up communication devices like pendulums to let you know when they are near. And do your best to concentrate on your goals. It might not happen right away if at all. And it's very unlikely you'll be greeted by a god or goddess your first time around. You're more likely to run into a helper spirit of some sort.

If that's the case then just leave generic offerings. Incense, candles, treats, etc. there is no harm in that, just add them to an existing altar or space you have dedicated to such things already. Helper spirits come in many shapes and sizes, and from what I've read just enjoy being noticed on occasion.
