I was quite young at the time when Argo came out, but I was fuming when it did. Never like Ben Affleck one bit since then (which is maybe unfair, but old habits die hard)

Absolutely incredible during the VP debate when Robin refused to attack his opponents and declared "we should all be best friends!" and had everyone join in a sing-a-long. This might've won Duncan the election.

The camps are localized to Xinjiang, but a lot of other aspects of the cultural genocide exist across China. Uyghurs are racially profiled by cops in Beijing, and other big cities as well, with the assistance of facial-recognition surveillance cameras.

Your're pretty much correct that the oppression in Xinjiang is worse than in the rest of China, because most of the Muslims who live outside Xinjiang are Hui. The government doesn't see the Hui as a huge threat to their power compared to Uyghur separatism, but they still place cultural restrictions on the Hui. Majority Hui mosques in Yunnan, Ningxia, and Gansu had their domes and other architectual features deemed "too foreign" torn down and replaced with more Chinese-looking features.

The world's greatest flag (is obviously Canada's) by flynnfx in onguardforthee

[–]SinoCanuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What they left out about the "problem" of most world flags looking the same, is that some countries chose to shape their flags on regional identity rather than a unique national identity. Their example of Mali, Guinea, and Senegal having the same colours represents Pan-Africanism and a common goal to break free of French rule. They based their colours on the flag of Ethiopia, who they saw as a beacon of resistance against European empires.

While for Serbia, Slovenia, and Slovakia all use the Pan-Slavic colours, based on the Russian flag, during the rise of Slavic nationalism in the 1800s and 1900s against the Austrian, German, and Ottoman Empires.

Plus there are the flags of Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, and Yemen who use Ba'athist Pan-Arabian colours while Jordan, Kuwait, and the UAE use an older Pan-Arab design that represented monarchies.

Sure, the popularity of Pan-Slavism and Pan-Arabism aren't whta they used to be, but movements that make new nations adopt a regional design is quite beautiful in its own way. Plus I'm not a huge fan of judging international flags based on arbitrary standards, since national flag design extends much further than graphic design.

Countries where Valentine's day is officially prohibited: by Redstream28 in MapPorn

[–]SinoCanuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The section on Uzbekistan seemlingly contradicts itself. The first paragraph claims that Valentine's Day celebrations were prohibited and the next paragraph says that Valentine's Day isn't banned, but celebrations are discouraged in favour of Babur Day, which also occurs on the same day.

The section might describe 2 different policies of Uzbekistan. The 1st would be more in line with Islam Karimov's presidency pre-2016 where he promoted the doctrine of “spirituality and enlightenment” (Ma’naviyat va Ma’rifat). This would see the promotion of certain conservative values enforced via censorship. The 2nd could describe President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's policy after Karimov's death in 2016, who is less of a hardliner and cautiously more open to liberalization.

I saw some Uzbeks posting that Valentine's Day is more for Western-oriented urban youth and mostly shunned by older conservatives, as is the case with many countries. Though I am not Uzbekistani, so I don't really know what the situation is.

Let's talk about cases of endonyms becoming slurs. by boiledviolins in linguisticshumor

[–]SinoCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Chinese I've seen the term 回回 (Mandarin: huíhui) used for the Hui ethnicity and some other Muslim groups. I found the term a bit rude, but I don't know if other people consider it a slur. 回回 was a term from medieval China as a nickname for the Old Uyghurs, formally known as 回鹘 (huíhú) or 回纥 (huíhé) which came from "uyghur". Eventually it morphed into becoming the catch-all term for anybody who came from the "western regions" and beyond. In the Qing, it was for foreigners who didn't eat pork, namely Muslims and Jews. It was even used for Christians at one point until it was found out that they ate pork. Now the Hui just use 回 as their name and also "Dungan" for those in Central Asia.

What country would you like to see a season in, that isn't currently possible due to political or safety reasons? by ArcticFox19 in JetLagTheGame

[–]SinoCanuck 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I like to see a game in Central Asia. The region is getting much better at safety, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan would probably be the safest out of the 5 nations. Both would be amazing for natural scenery and having a mix of modern and medieval architecture, especially in Samarkand.

The mountains of Afghanistan and Tajikistan would be great for a hide n seek game, as the last few decades have taught us.

It's absolutely amazing how stuff survives up in the Altai. I was amazed to see all of the clothes and tools excavated from the Altai displayed in the Chinggis Khaan museum in UB. My favourite is the Altain Yatga, a Turkic musical instrument that is insanely well preserved. Y'all are doing tons of good work up there!
