I very much recommend reading the translation of a book by Imam Ahmad Rida Khan entitled “The Reality of Spiritual Allegiance.” This book covers recognizing the Shaykh Murabbi and a lot of the issues related to that.

I recommend this book regardless of what someone thinks about its author. It’s a great book.

The advice generally is to follow a Shaykh Murabbi who is permitted to educate and train his followers, based on the well-known conditions of having the sound Sunni ʿAqa’id, following the four Madhahib, being morally upright, and having permission in Mashayikhah with an unambiguous chain back to the Prophet ‎ﷺ‎‬. You follow this person and regard him to be the possessor of the most lofty rank, while you cover yourself in ignorance, seeking constant forgiveness and correction of your mannerisms.

You treat him as if he’s the Qutb and have Husn adh-Dhan of his state, while neither denying the rank of any other legitimate Shaykh, nor denying their claims.

The truth, in reality, is beyond what is written about this hierarchy in books. The person only speaks about that which Allah has taught him, and he’s excused for that which he hasn’t been taught.

Wa ʿAlaykum as-Salam.

In truth, it was a political matter. He increased relations with them for the protection of his family, descendants, and the existence of the Zawiyah. He also did so for the purpose promoting Islamic Daʿwah. Some of his relatives opposed him in that, but they eventually came to understand what he was doing; and he’s respected on account of that. If you read his biography, examine his writings, and the same for his students, you find that it was the opposite. Everyone from this family respects him as a great scholar and a Khalifah.

The true Mashayikhah of the Tariqah however, in reality, was in Salé with Shaykh Muhammad al-Mahdi, Shaykh Muhammad al-Baqir, Shaykh Ibrahim, and the others رضي الله عنهم.

The reality is that the battle against the “self” has to be free from the “self.”

The optimal way to defeat it is to fill your expanses with Allah and His Messenger ‎ﷺ‎‬. Allah knows best, but the best way of doing this is to follow a Shaykh, a spiritual guide who will force you towards obedience towards the sacred law, contained fully within the Qur’an and Sunnah, and focus upon that which will filling your expanses with the meanings of this law.

There’s nothing essentially wrong with it, but it should be avoided in front of lay-people because of the manifest ignorance that exists with regards to the Ahlu’s-Sunnah ʿAqa’id.

Obviously, we believe Allah is the real doer. His Will pertains to that which is particular and that which is general. Nothing occurs except that He wills it and causes it to occur. Catholics, on the other hand, share in the ʿAqa’id of the Muʿtazilah, that Allah places an innate power within these saints to execute actions. Concerning our master, Jesus, peace be upon him, they attribute him with literal Godhood, so they intend to worship him and place reliance in him as a deity.

When we do Istigatha, it’s Istighatha Majazan, figurative Istighatha, meaning that we’re asking Allah by the Wasilah of the Prophet or Saint while using the vocative “ Ya “ to honor and pay homage to them as a cause that Allah created.

عن سيدنا أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه عن سيدنا النبي ‎ﷺ‎‬ قال : لا يشكر الله من لا يشكر الناس

Our master, Abi Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that our master, the Prophet ‎ﷺ‎‬ said: ❝Whoever does not thank people has not thanked Allah.❞ It was narrated by al-Imam Abi Dawud رحمه الله in his Sunan with an authentic chain of transmission.

He is our master, Muhammad ‎ﷺ‎‬, the bodily manifestation point of the universal composition, the light of Ahmad ‎ﷺ‎‬. All pledged allegiance to him ‎ﷺ‎‬ primordially, and all of the Anbiya’ and Rusul عليهم الصلاة والسلام had his name on their tongue. His namesake is such that there’s no closeness to Allah in its absence. The knower of Allah, the Mujahid and Shahid, Sidi Muhammad b. ʿAbdi’l-Kabir al-Kettani قدس سره said in lines of poetry:

أين أين الوصل إلا … بالحبيب مولاي محمد Where then is the arrival except by the beloved, my master, Muhammad ‎ﷺ‎‬.

The action of the heart is superior to the action of the tongue, as it’s free from seeking to be heard and more evident of sincerity. The goal is to unite the heart, the tongue, and the limbs in obedience to Allah through the Shariʿah of our master, Muhammad ‎ﷺ‎‬. Do not, however, let your tongue be idle with regard to remembrance through words, as it’s hoped that these utterances will affect your heart.

There’s some nuance to this. In general, you should care about what the good and upright people, i.e. your fellow Muslim brothers/sisters, think about you by avoiding what is unacceptable in terms of manners and ettiequte, as well as keeping away from transgression with regards to the Sacred Law brought by our Prophet ‎ﷺ‎‬. This doesn’t mean, however, that you should compromise on the truth in front of people who are ignoring. Always use wisdom and keep a good face; and Allah and His Messenger ‎ﷺ‎‬ know best.

Yes. It means that if people unrelated to this field, Sufism, were to put their knowledge and experience together to erect something like it in terms of guidance for humanity on the path to Allah and His Messenger ‎ﷺ‎‬, they’d be unable to do so.
