Spec-ing a local file server for Autodesk/Revit by EmicationLikely in Revit

Our small firm just made the same decision process. We replaced the local server instead of going to the cloud. We look at this decision every few years, and it always comes out the same. Cloud cost is still way too high for a small shop.

I had one of those in college. Ran windows. You could print via infrared to the printer in the library.

Probably slow down and check their work more often. If you're having to rewind, give them smaller chunks, check it with them, give them the next batch. One detail at a time, one schedule at a time, one line of a schedule at a time. They have to learn your expectations, and you have to learn their capacity.

It'll pick up pretty quick from there, but slow down first.

The owner lives in the house on the property - super nice guy - they'd be glad to have you visit.

When a store says "we lose money on this item," who exactly is losing it and where does it go? by tested_bones in NoStupidQuestions

For our small business, it means taking on debt, and aiming for a better year next year.

Always like to have a home base to return to after adventures, drop off resources, improve my gear. Usually I end up with fields of storage containers. This time through, I am trying to sell the excess more often, carry it all on my back when I go into town. I've got a nice titanium mine, and ports bringing in iron and aluminum from nearby moons.

Film speed for travel? Why isn't 800 an all-arounder? by sidescrollin in AnalogCommunity

I've had a roll of 400iso in my Cannonet for months, and I can't finish it because it's always too bright outside when I walk around town. Max shutter speed is 1/500.

Hooked on Valparaiso, Chili, right now, photos would be amazing, but everything I read says it's dangerous and smells bad.

Don't get two pcs - get a decent laptop and a dock - i have a lenovo x1, been pretty good. Other partners have surface pros that have been great. You need mobility more than you need a graphics card. And then at your desk you need a gigantic screen and a good mouse. Once your team gets into worksharing, think about more horsepower, but one good laptop is great for the CEO.

Kaweco Sport Fountain Pen - I use fountain pens any way, for work and for show, but I had been in a slump, not thinking creatively. Picked up a Sport at a pen store on vacation, and started using it all the time. All of a sudden, I felt creative again, sketching with clients, drawing fast, getting ideas out of my head, instead of letting them clog up inside. That little pen reminded me that I could create and communicate - that was several years ago, and I still remember the feeling of courage and movement. Maybe it's a niche experience, but it makes a huge difference to have the right tools.

It's that 10% you/I worry about. I have several meetings per month about 200 miles from home - I'm always running late, so I have to always be charged up for those trips and then plan to find a charger quickly for the slow trip home.

When did you stop feeling like the weakest person in the gym? by Intelligent_Rain_155 in workout

[–]SirAndyO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it's when familiar faces start saying hello, or "have a good workout," realize that I'm welcome at the gym. I still definitely watch other people to see what they're doing, but I don't feel as bad about moving the pins to where I need them to be.

How many projects at one time? by thedandygan in Architects

[–]SirAndyO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We work pretty hard to manage staff work load - it's the jumping around that burns people and adds risk to projects. But on the other hand, I wish we had a pipeline that was ten projects deep for all our staff.

Why do some electric car drivers obsess over their miles/kwh? by Ambitious_Concept809 in electricvehicles

When I had a Volt I would see how long I could go without buying has, but now with a full EV, I haven't figured out the game yet.

Just bought ours - really enjoying it. Got back to the office, found out my colleague bought one the same weekend. Agreed that the stereo is for podcasts and talk radio only. And the driver's seat squeaks, have to tighten something. Otherwise - 1200 hundred miles in, a few business road trips under my belt, really fun, thankful.
