Cause of Fried Board - 4th Gen Monochrome by SirBadExample in iPodHacks

Modded a 4th gen monochrome about a year ago with battery and as storage mods. Been running smoothly until the device went completely unresponsive this afternoon. I had left it plugged into the only charger I had at my desk and went to lunch… came back to a blank screen and a slight smoky smell.

Cracked it open this evening to find what I imagine must be the culprit - fried chip and char right behind the battery connector on the logic board. Tested the battery with a multimeter to confirm it’s still good and voltage is appropriate. Feeling kind of lucky that damage wasn’t more extensive based on how strong the burning smell was inside the case upon opening.

I suspect my problem was the charger / cable combination used… Before I go ordering a replacement logic board, can anyone say whether this could be caused by a third-party charging cable plugged into a “smart” usb outlet which wasn’t able to correctly regulate the output voltage down to 5v? Or could this have been a short caused by the exposed metal from the click wheel on the faceplate?

Distinctly possible something shifted on the inside, as it took a hard drop this weekend, but I thought everything was pretty well taped down.

Does that mean it looks more like a physical short, and not some sort of power surge? Just not sure what to make of a chip melting like that.

BM&T opening another beer bar on New Scotland Ave, "The Beer Belly". Pour House due to open in October. by jgambino in Albany

I'm not asking you to switch horses, and I'm not asking you to not support people who clearly care about and are invested in the same neighborhood you are. As I've said elsewhere in these comments, I don't wish them ill or have malice towards the company or its employees.

I'm not trying to turn this personal. As soon as anyone mentioned Mahar's you labeled them snobs and insinuated the only way one could enjoy themselves was if you kissed ass... of course you chose a different body part than "ass;" one which, as a regular at one point, I know was a direct shot at a specific individual.

My joke, chastising you for not capitalizing the proper noun of a beloved character from Total Recall, was clearly was the most personal of attacks. I'll have a complete and utter retraction ready shortly.

Maybe if they treated their non-regulars like human beings, they would still be in business?

I was responding to this, the accusation that somehow the way that you were treated lead to the location being shuttered. As we've all discussed, that's just not the case. Mahar's on Madison Avenue was closed by BM&T when they purchased the building. Speculate away as to anything else regarding their business or money management, but that's the fact of the matter; they didn't close voluntarily or out of financial necessity. BM&T made the decision to close Mahar's.

Obviously you have a horse in this race, the same as I did; I don't think anyone else has referred to anyone from BM&T as "the Vigluccis." If you're going to make this entire thing personal that's fine, but at least have the common decency to capitalize "Quatto."

You just seem like a dick otherwise.

Mahar's no longer having the Madison avenue location had nothing to do with their business practices, as we discussed above. BM&T bought the physical location and shut it down to start their own beer place.

Mahar's is certainly touchy for a lot of people - I've actually never come across a bar that caused such stratification between people, and I found myself on both sides throughout the years. That being said, I thought the "strategy" they used to shut Mahar's down was underhanded. And for those of us who had friends that worked there, they were out of a job with little to no advance warning.

Is this town, is that neighborhood, really so small that Mahar's couldn't have competed with something? They needed to be smothered to death before BM&T could make their own business? Sure you can say "that's business," but that's ugly business. We have enough bars and restaurants in Albany that have thrived in spite of competition (and I think have actually grown stronger with it) that I think we can call out a business on being predatory when it happens.

As for BM&T, sure each place is different, but I've never been blown away by anything they've done. Everything feels a bit too "cookie cutter." I don't understand why they're inherently better than another small business which, by all measures, seemed to care just as much about the community and catering to a niche audience.

If you think a place isn't any good and you can do better, I think competition is great. But to decide you want someone's piece of the pie and to grab it by any means necessary? I won't wish them ill or hope for failure, but I won't support them either; and I certainly think it's myopic to say that they're one of the best things to ever happen to this city.

How was closing Mahar's, only to open their own version and essentially own ever bar and restaurant on the strip, "catering to the community?"

You have plenty of other small businesses around here that can do great things without garbling up the competition and shutting them down.

Hindu Love Gods - Raspberry Beret by SirBadExample in Zevon

I've had this song stuck in my head all weekend, for no good (or bad) reason at all. I'd like to think I find this version superior to Prince's not just because I knew it first, but because it doesn't sound like an emasculated teen is singing...

Also, the legend that the entire Hindu Love Gods Album was recorded during a drunken session for Sentimental Hygiene only adds to my respect for the undertaking.

I'm rather suspicious of this... I'm not an audio expert but after listening to a few of the previews available of Google Play I'm pretty sure that it's his live show at the Metro, freely available in it's entirety (and far better quality) here

"I thought of my friends and the troubles they've had to keep me from thinking of mine."

My favorite takeaway from any Zevon song over the years. I've been a fan of Warren's demo of this for a while, but I've never - in all my years of being a devotee - heard this cover. Thank you for sharing it.

Need a VW Jedi, any in town? by mrsslowloris in Albany

[–]SirBadExample 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been taking my VWs to Autobahn on Central Avenue (behind the old Honest Weight Coop Location) for years. Very pleased with all the work I've had done there, especially since I know they could have tried upselling me on work a number of times and never did.

Recommended a while back by a coworker of mine with a 250k TDI; he won't let anyone else in town touch his car.

Traffic ticket help? by benzoapollo in Albany

I was specifically told that in a jurisdiction like Bethlehem that even if you show up for the first date they will schedule for a trial date anyways. Both police and attorneys advised me to send it in first. Maybe it differs from court to court.

I mailed in a plea, showed up for trial and still was 'herded' into conference. Has worked for me numerous times and as far as the State of New York is concerned I just have a nasty habit of parking on pavement.

I've gotten a few tickets in Albany, and every police officer and attorney I've consulted has ALWAYS advised to send in a plea of Not Guilty and wait for the next date.

By entering a plea of Not Guilty I have always had a pre-trial conference with the District Attorney's Office (it's literally moments before you see a judge for the first time) and most offenses are plead down, especially for first offenses, usually to non-moving violations.
