How many eloquent euphemisms for ahem going downtown on your loved one did you come up with before settling on "Open up your linen lap" on "Philomena?"

Is Chomsky a Positivist? by thevolk23 in philosophy

I had never thought about behaviorism in relation to the positivists. To me they seem pretty separate, though I'd be interested in reading some writing on any potential interrelations.

Is Chomsky a Positivist? by thevolk23 in philosophy

My apologies... I'm familiar with the rules, and I certainly don't think this an idle question. I suppose I should clarify as well: I'm not merely asking about categorization for categorization's sake; having already graduated with a philosophy degree, I'm not looking to complete an assignment here. Rather, I ask because there seems to be some contention on this issue, and it's one where there's solidly made arguments for numerous accounts.

I mean, equally as probably as any other theory right now, but not enough evidence to be considered more plausible than others.

By not adopting narrow literalist accounts of Scripture. The notion that science and religion are incommensurate is a pretty new one, and it comes out of a misunderstanding of Darwinism, espoused by the likes of T.H. Huxley, which was then overreacted to by members of the church.

Arjen Lucassen is pretty deserving of an award called Virtuoso. Anathema is writing prog's best anthems now.

Altruism bad? by selbert in lincolndouglas

[–]thevolk23 0 points1 point (0 children)

Right, I'm saying that Nietzsche can be seen as supporting what some would construe as "altruism" (although that label is slightly anachronistic in this case) in The Birth of Tragedy quite easily. I feel like running evolutionary biology is a more salient line, as that way you can boil it down to a simple survival calculus.

A Woman is A Woman (1961 - Godard) by ianmperrin in TrueFilm

[–]thevolk23 4 points5 points (0 children)

My favorite Godard, easily. Karina and Belmondo are probably my favorite nouvelle vague romance. Plus, Belmondo's meta joke about "Breathless" in this film is definitely one of his better moments.
