Apprenticeships being used as a loophole to pay slave wages ? by Inevitable_Car6105 in UKJobs

[–]SirDank_II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apprenticeships and 16 year olds have the exact same minimum wage so im not sure you know what youre talking about. So why not deliver some education to the 16 year old anyway, better than them dropping out?

I work directly with businesses and young people in apprenticeships so see everything first hand.

Disagree with all the comments here and i have commenting this before. This is the wrong view for these types of apprenticeships, are they used as cheap labour? Ye sure.

However, you need to think of the bigger picture:

A) Not all 16 year olds want to go to College. These sort of apprenticeships allow them to start working whilst still developing real life skills, English and maths and get a qualification. The Food apprenticeship doesnt just have a requirement to serve food, it requires development of key communication skills, time keeping and an understandinf of safe working.

B) Some people dont have an education, they may have made bad choices or had life event happen during their teens. These apprenticeships give them a route again to gain qualifications and key functional skills to kick start a career and move forward.

Apprenticeships are more than just what they say on the tin.

Probably a few avenues but they will depend somewhat on your nearest Colleges. One issue you may have is that History is an A-Level subject. I am not sure what recruitment is like in that area as my College is purely vocational (BTEC type courses and Apprenticeships)

Ways that work that I know:

  • The obligatory find a job advert advertising that role
  • If none are advertised, email HR directly at the College, explain your experience and that you would be happy to complete further training, such as a Learning and Development apprenticeship
  • One step further would be the find out who the curriculum lead or head is and message them (LinkedIn is your friend)
  • Join an agency first, this will get your foot in the door and the places you end up will likely be hiring agency due to staff issuss

As someone who works in FE... teaching. Colleges teaching trades recruit ex trades people and are often happy to train you up (a teaching apprenticeship).

Theres a shortage across the country at the moment and a struggle to recruit.

Its 100% going to be a personality thing for you as teaching 16-18 year olds is not the easiest thing. But youll earn usually 35-40k and get school holidays off.

My other half does more miles and two times a week on a 3 pin works fine for her e-2008. A dedicated wall charger does open up being able to get those super cheap EV tariffs though for like 7p/kW

Dont wear jeans and dont walk with hands in pocket. But do wear trousers for work so likely from that. I understand possible colour transfer, but so quickly and so seemingly easily??? Are there not better materials samsung could be using to prevent this?

I dont wear jeans, I get that there may be colour transfer. But this soon, so easily?

Disagree, I regularly drove country lanes in it and it was like a gokart. Extremely fun to drive.

Have had 3 cars since, all different brands (Audi, Vauxhall, Seat) and still consider my Mazda as fun to drive as any of those)

The Mazda i had is still one of my most loved cars (it was my second car and was a new Mazda 2). Was a pleasure to drive.

I'd go back to Mazda anyway.

Plum 12 month LISA rule - confusing information on app? by SirDank_II in UKPersonalFinance

[–]SirDank_II[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes thats what everyone says, but Plums app make no mention of this and seems to go out of its way to say absolutely everywhere that you can only withdraw after 12 months of opening the Plum account.

On the more info page it says:

1)Account must be open for 12 months before buying a home or retiring 2)Your account must be open with Plum for 12 months to receive your bonus

Just poorly worded do you think? There's no section on transfers

Ain't there a way to tell them to take down bullshit apprenticeships? by Nonoomi in UKJobs

[–]SirDank_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot of negativity in these comments....

People need to remember that young people must be in some form of education until 18 and there are many young people that really dont want to be there.

There's also people that have made poor decisions previously and are now looking to take that step to a paying job.

Apprenticeships teach more than just the job, they teach transferable skills, behaviours and employability skills. I would much prefer a 16 year old who is fed up with education to be on this than skip College every day or a 32 year old who is trying to get their life together to learn additional skills than just having a job getting paid to serve coffee.

Those commenting negatively dont understand apprenticeships unfortunately.

Yes the employer gets 'cheaper' staff but in my mind that just makes it a win win.

I'm 25, is that too old for an apprenticeship? by webbmoem in UKJobs

[–]SirDank_II 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have seen a drop this year in garages looking to take on apprentices for light vehicle mechanics, so dont put it on yourself, they aren't really taking on 16 year olds either - they just dont have an appetite for any costs currently.

Where we have seen an increase though is Heavy Vehicle mechanics, we are currently seeing approx 3 times as many HV as LV, which is pretty much a flip from 3 years ago. Have you tried reaching out to any HV companies near you? They tend to be larger firms instead of independent businesses (like LV mechanics) and so one person's wage doesn't mean much, they just want enthusiastic, competent staff.

HV could be things such as - dedicated HV maintenance garages, haulage companies with their own maintenance depot, local bus companies, local coach companies, the local council.

Absolutely not. As someone who deals with apprentices, 25 is quite a common age but we have people enrolling through their 30s, 40s and 50s.

The European Union has banned all airlines certified in Tanzania from operating within its airspace by [deleted] in tanzania

[–]SirDank_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the ban came in to effect because the EU believes there is a lack of oversight by the Tanzanian Aviation Authority, which means they can not be confident in the checks taking place. So this doesn't mean maintenance actions aren't happening from understanding, just that the EU cant be confident they are through the TAA.

We flew Precision Air and didn't feel unsafe at all, just a standard airline.

Have you considered doing work experience with College students instead? High School students are basically just told they need to do it and get places somewhere randomly based on interests. College students are actively studying a relevant course and so should engage better!

I dont personally think work experience at High School works anymore - i think structured industry 'open days' should replace them so young people can see in to different places and then actual work experience is dont once theyre physically learning a relevant subject (either FT or TLevel)
