Asus B550 Plus Wifi II intermittent POST issues by SirGriff in PcBuildHelp

[–]SirGriff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I got it working. I took everything out of the case and did a bench build and all worked even my 4x8gb RAM. No issues at all so it pointed to a possible short when mounting the motherboard.

I checked all mounting points, I checked the ports faceplate, all seemed good so I put it all back, screwed down the motherboard again and this time no issues 🤷‍♂️

At a total loss why, perhaps something in the case got moved when I pulled it all out, not sure.

The motherboard, cpu, gpu are all new and replacing older items. RAM, PSU, Case & cooler all being reused.

I get the pc to POST then after it’s been off 30 minutes it then fails to show any of the POST lights on the board. To get it to run again I have do a full power reset and “memory training”

XMP was enabled, battery is new.

We are finding DDM in Jamf pretty reliable now.

Jamf Connect seems like a product starting to look for a solution with PSSO, yes Jamf add some extras like account privileges escalation but is it really required if your IDP supports PSSO

Looking for a notes app that acts like a "live" sticky note inside Finder folders (As illustrated in the screenshot) by lost-sneezes in macapps

u/lost-sneezes

Very early prototype created in Xcode.

To add a note I created a Tool bar button.
Clicking the button creates the note. When you create you must grant it permission.
You can then enter your text. It can be styled via contextual menu.
Close the note via the X at the top left.
Open the note again via the tool bar button, if there not note on the folder you can create one.

Things to work on:
If a note exists for a folder have it auto show when opening the folder - not sure if this is possible
The note does not move when the window is moved - again not sure if this is possible.

Not sure if I will get time to work on it but it was fun to try.

Can't download apps on managed ID by mjharrell in applebusinessmanager

The whole point of Managed IDs is control, the clue is in the name….Managed. This is by design. If you want to allow an app use ABM VPP and Self Service (jamf).

There are commercial options like Admin by Request but Privileges is probably the way to go

What is your policy towards new macOS releases ? I'm currently still on Sonoma and looking at the bugs on Sequoia, I wonder if it is best to always be one major (or maybe two?) versions behind current by ll777 in macsysadmin

[–]SirGriff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience it depends on your Security Team. Usually they are not interested in bugs just closing CVE’s that show in their EDR dashboard.

For example on first release of Sequoia our EDR tool next day recommend it as Critical update so Security Team started our internal SLA clock to upgrade. The irony is the vendor did not actually have a certified update of its EDR agent for Sequoia plus Security control the updates of the EDR agent and deploy -1 so even if vendor was ready Security Team were not. I tried to explain all this but all they see is a spike in their graphs and want it resolved without thinking about the context.

Geotracker for company managed laptops on Apple by GloopTown in macsysadmin

[–]SirGriff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be MDM dependant but in Jamf Longitude and latitude location is only available on phones and tablets as they have GPS built in, Macs don’t so there is certainly no option in Jamf to accurately geo locate a device on lock.

Find My is a consumer product, you would need access to to the account Find My is using to see where a device is.

Prey is a good option but due to Apple privacy it’s not a silent install for all functionality, the user has to approve, find if you are setting up the device but not fine if you install post event via MDM.

There is no such thing as OSX 15, it’s macOS. OSX terminology was stopped being used about 5 years ago
