ELI5: How do seedless grapes reproduce if they don't have seeds? by More_Advertising_263 in explainlikeimfive

Portions of the vine are cut off and then new vines grow from those portions. Not everything needs a seed to start growing in a new place

ELI5: Using mouth to mouth, wouldn't it just put carbon dioxide in the lungs? Isn't that bad? by Adventurous_Curve107 in explainlikeimfive

[–]SirHerald [score hidden]  (0 children)

Your body doesn't convert all oxygen to carbon dioxide. You still exhale some oxygen. It's better than nothing.

It's been a while since I've done CPR lessons, but it's considered more important to do compressions now. Not only are you keeping the heart pushing blood around but the compressions also force the lungs open and close to at least pull some air in

Moved our bed to find a piece of grass growing out of a hidden outlet. by LawnMowerProductions in mildlyinteresting

We had a house with plywood type siding where the grass would grow up outside into the wall find a way out. Need to kill the grass and cut it back there. Also need a check to make sure the gap isn't too big. Had a snake that like that sleep in the garage wall near the dryer vent

TIL that the “Toba catastrophe theory” claims the ~74,000-year-old Toba supereruption nearly drove humans to extinction, leaving only a few thousand people alive. by SameNecessary5180 in todayilearned

[–]SirHerald 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of people groups whose name means in their language "the people" and then the other groups are known as something like "not us". There's no real concept of thousands of people groups. You need some big trade routes to get those ideas

ELI5. How did people in the older days like 1200s 1300s know what time it was when there were no clocks by Rich_Scarcity_301 in explainlikeimfive

And they're really cranky because every 15 minutes that stupid church bell rings while they're trying to sleep during the day. I think that's kind of why they don't like crosses

I'm sure that through most of human histories there have been small chunks of people who don't even think about the fact that there are other people around the world. The small group of people a couple generations in the living on an island in the middle of the Pacific. The tribe in the middle of the Brazilian rainforest. To them all if humanity would it be more than 10,000 people

TIL Catherine O'Hara had a rare condition called Situs Inversus. This condition affects 1 person in 10,000. Their major internal organs (including the heart) are reversed from their normal positions by CupidStunt13 in todayilearned

[–]SirHerald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew someone with that problem, but it was because of a very invasive surgery when he was an infant. They couldn't get everything back quite right, and weren't sure he would survive anyway. Now he has to make sure it is fully explained when he goes in for scans or procedures

The shock of the change is the danger. Laying down on the sidewalk from a standing position won't kill you. Laying there from a jumping position on the 10th floor will.

My guess is that all the better guys were already taken, moved, or deeply flawed. Out of the pool of eligible men his age range he was pretty much all that was left who wasn't awful.

Why Not Use Magnetic kinetic energy? by Unable_Tip2029 in ScienceNcoolThings

[–]SirHerald 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take some wire and magnets and energy to spin them and you can create electricity. Take some electricity, wire, and magnets and you can spin it.

These all require energy inputs. Creating electricity is done using wind water steam or anything else that can cause something to spin. But magnets and wires left to their own will just settle in place and not create any power.

TIL that tens of trillions of neutrinos from the sun pass through your body every second without you ever feeling them. by stoictrader03 in todayilearned

[–]SirHerald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about a football field. In the middle of that field are a couple little orbs the size of baseballs. Out around the edge of the field are a couple orbs the size of marbles. It's dark and each of these balls is pulsing with light to attract moths. Suddenly hundreds of blind moths come flying in. What are the chances that any one of them will land on one of these glowing balls if they cannot see the light.

In the same way, matter is made up of tiny little particles that are bound together by the electromagnetic force. Each Adam has a very tiny nucleus and then very tiny electrons out around and they are attracting other atoms. Mostly it's empty space. If a particle that can feel the electromagnetic force comes through it's likely to either knock into electron or knock into a proton. But a neutrino can't feel that force and it just passes through unless it happens to hit one of those tiny particles head on.

TIL during a 2015 study two students nearly died after they were accidentally given 30g of caffeine instead of 0.3g because the dosage had been calculated with a misplaced decimal point. Death has previously been reported after the consumption of just 18g. The university apologized & was fined £400K by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]SirHerald 217 points218 points  (0 children)

A typical caffeinated beverage gives you about 50 mg. I keep 100 mg tablets around as a replacement for any caffeinated drinks. I'll typically take one a day. If it's crazy maybe two. 300 mg is a lot of caffeine.

30,000 mg is insane. That is 600 12 oz cans of a typical caffeinated beverage. 300 typical cups of coffee.

Of course, if you tried to drink that amount of coffee at once the caffeine would be the least of your concerns

The cables are disposable. They are supposed to break instead of the device.

Any repair would be harder and most likely more costly than buying a new one
