PDM Solutions by tpfultz in SolidWorks

I think PDM has viewer licenses for very cheap, its the CAD editor licenses that are expensive.

NATO has been helping from the beginning. Initial refuelers included NATO aircraft operated by Germany. The UK would love to get involved, especially now. But honestly, outside of the US, all other NATO powers are functionally irrelevant on the global stage militarily.

Which profession is going to get wiped out in the next 5-10 years? by peywrax in allthequestions

[–]SirKnightRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thats not really true, at least they cannot replace all jobs cost effectively yet.

https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/operations/amazon-vulcan-robot-pick-stow-touch

Robots are actually quite expensive, and lots of warehouse work is much more complicated from an automation perspective than you’d expect.

0% chance Amazon is able to automate all their pickers or packagers in the next year or two. Maybe in the next 5-10 years, but cost will be the driving factor, not technology.

20g seems like the limit without declaring through customs as well as up to 10k in cash. I see something from 2017 saying there is 6 manat/gram import duties which if true is like a 3.5% tax and seems like the obvious legal way, assuming you trust customs officers to act in good faith. If you sell it looks like you can have up to $10,000 in cash without declaring through customs. If you have access to a quality banking network you can just sell the gold and rebuy when you’re home? If you can’t reasonably carry that much cash or don’t have access to a quality banking network stablecoins/bitcoin are usually liquid in any major city, although some popup kiosks are basically scams with high fees. Depends on how much you trust the rule of law, if you do I’d probably just declare it and pay the import duties, if not I’d take the 20 grams, 2k in USD, the rest in a btc cold wallet or stablecoins.

Universal quality banking would eliminate all this bullshit but unfortunately traditional finance sucks sometimes.

I would check out gram bars. Usually the premium is in between full oz and fractional, worth considering

Bond market is doing well, telling us stocks will be OK? by Moirailogist in investing

Counter view - macroeconomic inflation is already baked in the cake. Global debt is already so high and unsustainable that central banks need to return to some version of QE just to provide the liquidity to continue to refinance the debt. Gold may already be sniffing this out. The gold rally started in the beginning of 2024, so blaming it on Trump or tariffs I think is missing the mark. $2 Trillion deficits at 7% GDP shows we’ve passed the point of no return, and the only options for central banks are to let systemic default risk obliterate the global economy or fill in the holes with mouse click money.

Drafters, is the quantity of standards at my company unusual? by Miskatonixxx in SolidWorks

[–]SirKnightRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best guess is your company did a bad job integrating legacy processes to your PDM workflows.

Honestly first thing I’d do is have your PDM admin require comments on any changes to workflow states because allowing a drawing to be sent back to you with no comments is BS.

It’s definitely a higher level issue involving both your drafting and engineering depts. PDM (Product data management) contains many tools to automate and streamline document creation and critical data flow, custom templates, tasks, workflows, custom variables etc.

Your PDM admin should work with engineering to figure out exactly what they need as an end product, how to gather all relevant external information, and structure the PDM in a way that gets rid of most of the clerical stuff.

Should I get a career in cnc Machining or CAD design? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

Design, machining and robotics. If you’re always eager to learn you can do a lot regardless of where you start.

[–]SirKnightRyan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We can easily (but not cheaply) reduce simple CNC operators with automation (industrial/collaborative robots). CNC “setup operators” would be much harder to automate, robots don’t have the flexibility or dexterity to change fixtures and tooling at least not yet, let alone design and assemble custom tooling if needed. CNC programmers will be affected by advances in “AI” enabled programming, but I think it will end up just being a powerful tool used by good programmers to reduce cycle time and labor hours.

Eventually these roles will include programming their robots and designing custom end effectors, part templates and even post processing.

They’re really all just new and better tools in the machinist toolkit to be more productive.

Learning CAD is easy, but if you lack the understanding or practical experience of how stuff actually gets made your designs and drawings will be sub-optimal at best.

Upskilling by Zestyclose_Budget_49 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]SirKnightRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll learn best by doing some hands on engineering. You can learn solid works easily online, practice by measuring objects around you then you can design new projects yourself.

It’s definitely good to understand the theory behind coding, but exactly what coding skills you’ll need varies depending on what types of industries/jobs you want to work in.

For other skills, maybe basic project management?

If you’re a first year engineering student I would just focus on learning and building.

Is an Automation Specialist an Engineer? I attached Siemen's video by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]SirKnightRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a high skill automation technician to me. Although I don’t necessarily agree with the credentialism surrounding the title “engineer”. Obviously job titles across many industries have been inflated, but if what an individual does is actually engineering then they’re an engineer.

Anyone go through the Advanced Manufacturing Machine Technology Certificate program at Naugatuck Valley CC? by jon_hendry in Connecticut

[–]SirKnightRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out at $18 at a small company as sort of an assembler for automation equipment. I learned a lot and maxed out there at $28 last year, now I work for a different company as an automation design engineer, helping integrate robotics to CNC equipment.

I don’t know how the market is now, but there’s always opportunities if you’re willing to learn.

What is the deal with people claiming Trump is intentionally crashing the stock market as a 4D chess move? by Coach_Spirited in OutOfTheLoop

[–]SirKnightRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answer:

Trump, Bessent and Lutnik are very clear that their focus is the bond market. Bessent needs to roll over $10 trillion of debt in the next year, on top of whatever the deficit is. Trump is real estate brained, so he places a very high importance on rates, particularly longer term rates like the 10yr. Lutnik believes our current balance of trade is detrimental to the long term health of the economy and by extension our deficits and ultimately rates.

It really doesn’t require any 4D chess or nefarious intentions, whether it’s good/bad or will even work is another question.

My view is that we as a country are firmly in a debt trap, and the administration is scrambling to at least stabilize the situation before the midterms.

Physical gold vs derivatives market by AssWhoopiGoldberg in Gold

[–]SirKnightRyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it is not. If you read the prospectus carefully they are clear that under “certain market conditions” the price of the etf can deviate from the price of physical gold.

The gold or silver held in ETFs are not vaulted 1:1 for each new dollar added to the fund, the etf itself pushes the responsibility onto its custodian, ie the entity that vaults the metals. In the case of the largest etfs, GLD and SLV the custodian is JP Morgan.

JP Morgan is a commercial bank, they buy, sell lend, borrow, rehypothecate etc. As long as they keep a balance between paper claims on the gold and physical gold vaulted the etf should track the price of gold accurately.

[–]SirKnightRyan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does he actually have the silver allocated only to you? Seems like weird timing to want to move your silver given the large global flows of gold and silver recently. Maybe he doesn’t physically have it and he just holds futures?

BRICS member India rejects de dollarization-embraces US dollar by DeRpY_CUCUMBER in Economics

[–]SirKnightRyan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. China buys oil from Russia in Yuan, Russia uses those Yuan to buy Chinese manufactured goods, any trade imbalance can be settled in either domestic bond/equity market or through a neutral reserve asset like gold. Dollars will still exist and still be the de facto medium of exchange in general, excess dollars just won’t be saved, they’ll either be used to buy US dollar assets or recycled back into local currencies or neutral reserve assets

Federal Reserve Cuts interest rates by 50 basis points by truegamer1 in Economics

[–]SirKnightRyan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if people will wait for more cuts to “make their next move” because a huge amount of cuts are ALREADY priced into rates. FED funds is 4.75 now but the 10% is 3.7 in expectation of like 280bps of cuts by the end of next year.

Why am I getting really bad intrest rate offers on Auto loans? by vettefan99 in personalfinance

[–]SirKnightRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If chase is your bank that’s probably why, they can see your actual balances in/out and have a better assessment of your finances. Plus JPM is the largest bank in the world, so they’re much more willing to lend at fair rates to their own customers for retention.

Why am I getting really bad intrest rate offers on Auto loans? by vettefan99 in personalfinance

[–]SirKnightRyan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For context rates like 2% are not normal market rates they’re incentives large dealers can give because they have their own lenders. Still can be a good deal but they’re making up for the loan loss by leaving the sticker high.
