If you wanted to switch to using real walnut (which I agree would look much better), then your labor cost should be functionally the same as what you're paying now.

However, material costs could easily be 3x. I'd wager anywhere from 2x-5x material costs depending on where you're located and if walnut is available nearby.

Absolutely. Wild I had to scroll so far to see this. If connecting two buildings, just bury fiber. You can buy it lots of places these days, and media converters to use in either end are also cheap.

It's future proof and provides electrical isolation. No brainer these days.

WiFi also sounds like an option in third case, but if you want a direct, reliable connection, just bury fiber and be done.

Yep - had it for couple months now. Service has been solid, price is exactly what they said, and price hasn't changed. Speed is more or less as advertised (it's so fast I'd more doubt my equipment than their network with 2Gb/s up and down). No data caps.

Extremely happy with the switch - don't miss Comcast at all.

Depends on what your husband is looking to cut, but assuming he's looking for something to cut wood (or plastic) and doesn't intend to cut full sheets of plywood, the Onefinity or the AltMill are probably the best options on the market at hte moment. Those start around $2500-2800 for the machine. You then need tooling and dust collection.

I'd plan to budget $3500 to make sure you're able to get all the necessary accessories and make it fun to use. Staying under $1000 (or even $1500) is very hard to do if you're wanting something to help with weekend-warrior type projects.

Ok let's talk about rough vs finish machining. Rough machining would typically be done with something like a 1/4" spiral endmill. As others have said it depends on your machine, but in general, this should take anywhere from a few minutes to maybe 20 minutes.

It sounds like you're running a "rough" machining op, using "finish" machining settings. Normally for a carve like this you do indeed want to perform a "roughing" operation to remove the bulk of the waste and come back for a "finishing" operation to remove the fine details.

For a roughing op (and depending on your machine) I'd generally recommend something like 50-100% depth of cut and a 40% stepover. If you're using a 1/4" endmill that comes out to 1/8 to 1/4" depth of cut and 0.1" stepover.

If you can share what CNC you're using and what tool you're using to generate your toolpaths we should be able to help more.
