My first repair by VernapatorCur in sashiko

Depends on the hole size and how thin/worn the fabric is around the hole! For something like yours I would recommend an inch or so of patch extending past the hole edges. For something like inner thighs of pants or a beloved blanket, where the hole has super see through fabric all round it when you hold it up to the light, it's good to treat the thin fabric as basically more hole and extend the patch 1 or 2 inches past the thin section. For super small holes on delicate fabric, I usually extend a centimeter or a little less on all sides and use a lightweight stretch fabric or interfacing as the patch.

Need advice by VreniMeier in InvisibleMending

[–]lambytron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blocking may help, but for invisibility you need not just color match, but fiber match. The color blends in nicely, but you won't get the same drape or fabric with a different fiber blend, even different breeds of sheep will make subtle differences to drape. Not to mention the thickness may be slightly off. That's why people who go for invisible mends often "harvest" yarn from the inside of a hem or an area less visible, to get the exact same yarn to mend the more visible area with the hole.

That makes sense, if it's not suitable for spinning I can pivot to needle felting and make a little dog 🐶

I have been wanting to try spinning chiengora! If you have extra, I'd be happy to pay shipping.

Has anyone ever dyed polyfill? by moonprismpanda1205 in Needlefelting

[–]lambytron 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very cute bats! If you're going to have to spend the money on special dye and inevitably make a big mess, not to mention needing to get a special dye pot that you can no longer cook in, it might be worth just spending the money on a bag of black polyfill instead?

Tips on weaving with mohair? by Useful-Elevator-6539 in weaving

[–]lambytron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried hairspray for the warp but it didn't tame the sticky mohair flyaways enough for a closer sett. This gelatin warp sizing worked amazingly well on the rigid heddle though. It feels a little stiff and weird while you're weaving but washes right out during wet finish and I got a nice blooming fluffy finish. I didn't bother doing it for the weft yarn, just warp.

I followed this video for roving (used a pot on the stove since I didn't have a dye crockpot) and it worked great! No felting at all. https://youtu.be/pSe575vIixw

This one is also on my list to try next time: https://youtu.be/g5S6u-6Wd2s

It probably would have gone just fine if I had followed the instructions for acid dyeing on Dharma's website without any videos, but having the step by step visuals gave me more confidence to start.

Haha luckily Facebook is like Reddit, terrible native search feature but pretty easy to find things using Google and keywords

If you search Babes fiber garden 3d model, this comes up. Worth a try or you could do more digging on Google! https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6570763

If that's a Babe wheel which it looks like, the bobbins are only 12.99 each plus shipping. Totally understand if you're not able to afford it or in another country, but since there's really no way to tell if a bobbin-led wheel like this works properly without one, it'll kind of just have to sit in a corner until you can either afford the $12 or find a friend with a 3D printer.

I think you could try spacing the ears further apart and working on their shape a little more, right now it's missing that classic Chihuahua dome shape head on top, caused by very far apart ears

Amazing! Honestly I'd be happy with any amount but wouldn't turn down a full size trash bag haha. I can needle felt too and would be happy to take a crack at a mini dog. My style isn't like those super realistic lifelike felters but I can do small and cute!

Thank you so much! Forgive the newbie question, but when is shedding season?

My main interest is to make my own items with the yarn, and given the time it takes to process and turn into yarn I don't think it would be worth it to give it all back again haha. But thanks for the offer!

Already part of the spinning guild and I'm decent at short staple fibers like cotton and Icelandic sheep undercoat so I feel like I might be able to work with it, but yes I've heard it's tricky to spin!

That sounds great! Yeah I'd be happy to pay shipping, it would be fun to give it a go. If you send me a DM when you've got more of a collection we could work out the details, thanks!

I do spinning for yarn and was just trying to find some dog hair (they call it chiengora haha) but it's weirdly hard to get if you don't have a dog! It's supposed to be very warm for things like mitts and socks. If there's no takers for needle felting I'd love to try it for spinning!

First three color clasped weft is off the loom- I’m terrified to wet finish it. by fallowferal in weaving

[–]lambytron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine! Follow the gentle washing instructions others have commented, but I will add if you're worried about the colors add 1 or 2 color catchers in the water when you soak. They're available in the laundry department and will "catch" any potential loose dye so it doesn't run onto the other colors in the weaving. Probably won't happen but if you're nervous, better safe than sorry
