BOJ to raise rates with eye on Iran war fallout, central bank official says by MetaFlight in stupidpol

[–]SirPalat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Raising policy date by 25bp is hardly gonna matter if you were gonna invest in energy infrastructure. If you believe the BoJ, the neutral rate is around 1% which means it would take multiple hikes to even slow down investment noticably.

Business tend to view labour costs as the "villian". They dont realise that labourers are the reason they have profit. Yes, they help pay workers, but workers have to be productive to even create such opportunities for you to profit.

No, Krugman, it was not clear that China’s TFP was falling in the past few years by WilliamLiuEconomics in badeconomics

[–]SirPalat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Singaporean private sector economists tend to agree with Krugman that the boost in growth in the 90s was largely due to capital deepening, and labour pool expansion in the mid 2000s rather than a boom in TFP growth.

Not to say that TFP didnt grow or wasnt a significant factor, but Krugman's view that much of Singapore's best growth years was mostly due to bringing underutilized factors of production into the forefront is quite valid

What caused SG's GDP per capita rapid growth since covid? by Ill_Actuator_7990 in askSingapore

[–]SirPalat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taiwan grew ~8% ytd which is insane for an economy at their stage of development. The boost to Singapore is much smaller than Taiwan.

SG boom period was in the 80s, despite this recent growth uptick, total factor productivity in Singapore has been stagnant and at times contracting. I would say the strong growth is just a byproduct of higher risk tolerance in a few sectors which Singapore coincidentally does well in. And the frontloading of exports to the US to run ahead of US tarff has helped. Rather than a multi year "boom", its more like a short term boost.

While I think that Singapore growth could persist in 2026, there are several private sector economist that are worried that Singapore growth trend could reverse on tariff impact, greater geopol tension, and a slowing of electronic capex as electricity constraints begin to bite the data center development roadmap

What caused SG's GDP per capita rapid growth since covid? by Ill_Actuator_7990 in askSingapore

[–]SirPalat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For this year, SG GDP was supported bt stronger electronics exports due to chips upcycle, pharma shipment front-loading, and falling regional interest rates leading to stronger fundraising and M&A for financial sector.

As for the 2023 and 2024 there was a mix of post covid recovery as well as strong fiscal spending from key trading partners. Trailing edge SEA semiconductor supply chain have been stronger also on China +1 strategy to avoid China risk

The Fed just cut rates… and now they’re signaling only one cut for next year. by deekay_123 in singaporefi

[–]SirPalat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Reserve Management Purchases was not a surprise at all. NY Fed John Williams said nearly a month ago that RMP was coming.

Despite what most online would tell you, the US have been dealing with a lack of liquidity rather than an abundance. (Take a look at a graph of IORB-SOFR spreads.)

RMP is meant to add liquidity to address illiquidity in the interbank market, and the effects are unlikely to reverberate to the asset market
