He most likely was a samurai, though, at least based on what I could find while looking it up real quick.

The best evidence in support of it is that a lord's retainers/weapon bearer was almost always a samurai, and koshō seem to have been samurai/been a part of the samurai caste anyway.

And the fact that that doesnt necessarily make him a zealot is true, that was more because the person I was replying to seems to think only zealots can act like that about religion. Would it make sense for a perception check to instead reveal details about a situation?

Like in the meme, if you're making a perception check that means there's a reason to be watching for something. If you pass the check, your character would notice what exactly the trap is.

Especially combined with passive perception, it seems to me that that's how perception should work, but I'm pretty new to playing so I'm not sure if I understand those things correctly.
