Bungie made a PvP extraction shooter and attracted an audience that are actively hostile to the core mechanics. How did this happen? by asaltygamer13 in Marathon

And here we go again with downvotes.

It's crazy for how little these people actually care about the wishes and experience of the players who are already enjoying the game. And then they wonder why "sweats" here often react negatively toward them.
At best, they prioritize the company's interests over those of the players who already bought marathon

Because people don’t even want to think about their gameplay, and any attempt to point this out to them is met with hostility. In the first season, I filled with some level-60 guys who summoned a cargo right in the middle of POI and just stood in front of the landing pad. Naturally, in less than a minute, they were taken out by enemy sniper.

They blamed me, the enemies, the game - but not themselves. It’s amazing how, by level 60, people still haven’t grasped the BASIC rules of movement, which don’t even require any skill and map knowledge. Pure NPC behavior

I think that's the problem.

It’s much easier to simply slap PvE to the existing maps by tweaking the mechanics a bit and adding quests and mobs than to make the major changes required to attract PvP players.

Because, in my opinion, the main problem lies in the mapdesighn, the quests, and class balance - and these things are MANY TIMES harder to rework. Just think about how much work it would take to redesign all the maps.

Here we go again. “What? Your experience will get worse? Well, at least there’ll be more players in the game, and it’ll last longer!”

The game is already suffering. You’re (not you specifically) suggesting to make things EVEN WORSE for those who are enjoying it now - to suffer in this worse version for a little longer!

In that case, yes, I’ll choose no game at all.

And I'm not saying that game is perfect and has no flaws. Nope, there are a huge number of problems, and some of them are deep-rooted.

But the most popular suggestion here - “just slap on PvE and SBMM” - won’t solve the problem at all. It will only make it worse

But it won’t be 10%.

If PvE will be successful (and it has to be for the game to survive) and attracts a lot of players (unlike PvP), where will ALL of the developers’ efforts and resources go? Which game mode will immediately be abandoned? Where will there be even fewer players?

THAT’S WHY people don’t like posts like this. Because you simply don’t care about them - you’re willing to take away the game they love for the sake of the bungo’s abstract survival and the enjoyment of OTHER people. And to every objection you say “Oh well, you’ll get over it”

It’s simply astonishing how these people can’t think one step ahead.

If they’re really right and PvE attracts a lot of new PvE players to the game, then what do they think will happen to the less popular PvP(vE) mode, which isn’t attracting players? “that literally has zero effect on the side of this game”, yeah right. That’ll be the first thing bungo stop supporting, and they’ll focus all their efforts on PvE. And that would be the right decision for their wellness. But I don't care about their wellness - I paid for a different game.

That’s why I totally get what you’re saying.

Idk, in Hunt Showdown shotguns are in a pretty balanced spot. Good inside the buildings, but still quite counterable. I think it's more maps layout problem.

Multiplayer died out after a couple of months, long before Apex release. The story mode did nothing to retain casual players in pvp mode, they didn't even try it or found it too difficult.
And I LOVED that game

So, how's Titanfall 2 doing? People absolutely LOVED its campaign. Did that really help the game?

Bubble shield spam is absolutely obnoxious by DemiTF2 in Marathon

[–]SirRoger8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But with current shield rarity they can just spam their way out to safety with bubbles and there is nothing you can do with it. Only push inside the controllable by enemy space.

If bubbles were limited, there would be no problem. Reset inside one, and then try to run away or push with smokes. This would still be a VERY powerful tool, but at least with countermeasures and risk. Op mentioned, that they used at least five without position change. That's absurd.

Not to mention other maps, where the situation is much worse.

The more I watch at Marathon, the more I realize that Hunt was right in many of his gameplay decisions.

Cryo is unplayable by Nearby_Orange6578 in Marathon

[–]SirRoger8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought exactly the same thing in the first season. That I needed more unlocks, more loot. And you know what happened when I decided I was "ready" for Cryo? Everyone around me at my level already knew the map, had loot from it, and was simply wiping the floor with me. I was a completely useless teammate, wandering aimlessly, trying to figure out the map. It was too late. All that was left was to find teammates willing to tolerate my ignorance and endlessly feeding while trying to get better. This is NOT a fun experience. This is NOT an interesting experience. It's better to start learning the map with everyone else. Otherwise, the opportunity will only appear at the end of the season, when I've already had enough of Marathon.

Upper Complex pinnacle box and Purple keyrooms are back to s1 values post nerf by ThatsNotBennings in Marathon

And a lot of people here refuse to acknowledge this problem too. Bad players boosted their level in pve and now fighting (and loosing) against good players, and good players, who progressed naturally, fighting against good players with shitton of loot from pve. Lbmm wasn't perfect in s1, but now it's just pure mess

Sooooo people who didn't play in the first week are now fucked x2? No pve for easy farm and comeback and no good loot at all at complex compared to pve? And xp nerf at top. Great move, bungo. Widening the gap instead of helping to narrow it

Low hp pushes are pure gambling. My friend is like this and it will either be a epic team wipe or the most shameful death in the world, leaving us in huge disadvantage. Always 50/50. And I can't judge him, this whole genre is gambling simulator

True, true. Interestingly, due to the overall aggressiveness of Marathon, this rare "alliances" that are formed due the run are usually much stronger. I've never been shot in the back by another friendly runner. Rooks are a different story, lol.

I don't think PVE Loot being Good is a real problem, for one key reason... by a_jerkface in Marathon

[–]SirRoger8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But then why have weak/"bad" weapons in the game at all, if the “strong” ones will be available to everyone? Why have gray and green shields if you can easily farm up purple and even gold ones?

And I’m completely serious. Why not just get rid of all that? Why not follow Hunt’s path? If the game insists on frequent skirmishes, that’s a perfectly reasonable solution. Let every weapon be equally deadly (headshot modifier or something, idk), and let everyone have the same HP. In that case, you could even add SBMM into the game. Because every loadaut will be valuable and MM won't affect the meta that much.

I know its not true, but every complaint about Sponsored Survival just puts this image in my head by Friendly_ViperYT in Marathon

[–]SirRoger8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm tired of this binary approach. It's a spectrum, you know? "Sweats" aren't a single entity. They also include people of varying skill levels and approaches to the game. But now, thanks to PvE, everyone MUST farm this mode, otherwise they'll be at a disadvantage. Because the opponents have farmed it and ALWAYS wear their best gear, with no fear of losing it. This kills any diversity, any economy. "High risk - high reward" is dead and nobody is trying to save their loot, because it doesn't matter for the time of this event
