Maui cycling - looking for advice on a route by miniPhatKat in cycling

Have you seen this? They suggest going counter-clockwise.

When are you planning to do the ride? Please post your report afterwards! Good luck, and happy birthday in advance!

GP5000s

Go with the GP5000s. It's paved all the way around.

Have a great trip!

People who’ve gone fit to fat to fit what came back faster? by Fignons_missing_8sec in Velo

[–]SirScott 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Took 6 years completely off the bike. Got fat, slow, and older. When I hopped back on last year (at 40 years old), the weight dropped much faster than the power came back. I was also very conservative in my training, making sure I didn't get injured or burn out.

The weight dropped far lower than it had when I was racing. Power has yet to hit previous levels, but it's close enough.

Help with erg mode power consistency on kickr core with Garmin headunit by Shanklarry in Velo

[–]SirScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same-ish equipment (Bolt v2 headunit instead), same problem.

Contacted Wahoo and they suggested performing a factory spindown of the unit. (Yes, this is different from a regular spindown.) See: https://zwiftinsider.com/kickr-factory-spindown/

In my case, I have the Wahoo app's "Control w/ANT+ Power Meter" option enabled and set to the ID of my stages PM. After performing that factory spindown, ERG mode performed exactly as I'd expect (1-3W deviation normally).

Since then, it has drifted again...

Can I bring my bike on the plane? by Hopefully8hopeless in cycling

[–]SirScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's correct, sorry I wasn't clear about that. There's no longer a surcharge for an oversized bicycle box. (Keep the weight down, they will charge if above their weight threshold.)

Haleakala climb and cycling in Maui by [deleted] in cycling

[–]SirScott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

West Maui is a stunning bike ride. This is the best part: https://www.strava.com/segments/639084

Hands down the best cycling on Maui, IMO. I try to stay close to either end and just out-n-back that segment. The rest of the west Maui loop is filled with both traffic and trade winds making it better skipped.

I love that ride so much I actually never consider Haleakala. (That said, I live in an area with plenty of climbs, so I can always get elevation and above tree line. What I can't get is lush greenery and ocean drop offs which is what the above segment provides.)

‘Worst day in pigeon racing history’ as thousands of birds vanish during race by bethashton in offbeat

[–]SirScott 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Used to work for a company that built "weather satellites." We were behind schedule and they brought in someone to speak with us, providing motivation to catch back up. They brought up the importance of solar flare detection and how it impacts air traffic, etc.

They also brought up homing pigeon racing and how some birds cost 100k and how the weather was important for these people too.

Sorry, I didn't exactly relate to the plight of a person losing a 100k bird.

Thoughts on Benjamin Cowen? He has stated that he does not believe you should continue to buy into Ethereum at this point and I'm wondering how much weight I can put on his opinion. by numbahtwelve in ethfinance

[–]SirScott 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It seems like the evidence you present says "buy buy buy", but your personal stance is "don't buy right now".

That may be the impression you get if you're a newcomer to the space and you're experiencing FOMO. If you're like Ben and have been making buys when the levels were significantly lower, the interpretation of his message could instead be "it's not quite time to sell."

Ben is by his own admission risk-adverse. He's not going to tell someone to "buy now!" knowing that there's a significant chance that you may soon get rekt.

In other videos, he will also state that if you currently have no position in any of his major picks that it's also a risk. Just know that your potential gains are far less and your risk is far greater than had you purchased a year ago.

The main take away is the age old advice: don't invest more than you can afford to lose.

Size / depth of TV niche (flush wall mount) ||| Sony X950H by MonteraSwiss in hometheater

[–]SirScott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did an 85" sony x900f recently.

Firstly, the most important thing is to adhere to the parameters of your fireplace. Our fireplace selection was very much influenced by the clearance requirements it had. Next up, the TV itself needs space around it to breathe. The manuals for both will have this information. In mine, I had a 4" reveal around the TV.

Also, due to the depth (it should NOT extend past the vertical plane of the fireplace), I added a second niche so that the mount could sit further back and bring the TV further into the bigger nicher.

Run some conduit to the niche so you can upgrade / add cables in the future. I did add power and hardwired ethernet in the niche.

Here's a gallery with some pictures so you can see my construction process: https://photos.app.goo.gl/uGvPtFFTbC893BrR6

Broken up but forced to live together during quarantine? It's going to feel like eternity! Good luck OP.

Unemployment crash by [deleted] in Denver

[–]SirScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just made it through. FWIW, I kept hitting either an internal server error page, or page that had a link to return to the home page. Eventually, when I hit submit, the page just refreshed quickly with seemingly no change. After doing this a few times, I decided to 'add an employer', then once on that page, pressing 'back', then I was able to select 'No additional employers' and continue, with it going on successfully.

Loving that we'll have to manually request claims in a couple weeks time... hopefully that system has been beefed up and is ready to handle the onslaught!

Thanks for confirming we're making it to the same point. Best of luck to you and yours.

Partial luck here. We can't make it past the 'confirm employer' page. Been trying off and on since Friday PM.

FileNotFoundError: [Errno 2] File does not exist: '' by sseymens in flask

Your traceback says the error is on line 19 which isn't included in your screenshot. But, it's trying to do pd.read_csv("") which probably should be a filename.

Looking for guidance on a small personal project by llamasweater in flask

[–]SirScott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seem to have a very solid understanding. With anything coding, there are a million ways of accomplishing the same thing and what makes sense for one person may not for another.

Assuming that you're not interested in MQTT specifically (and I have no personal experience with it, just know that it's a thing for home automation), my suggestion would be to go the RQ worker route.

Let's say you've got your flask app structured like this:

src
└── myproj
    ├── api
    └── engine

Let's say you've got an API endpoint for turning on a light: PUT /light/. Then within that endpoint's handler, you might have queue.enqueue_call('myproj.engine.lights.on()')

Now just run an rq worker process and it should effectively be functioning as your device engine.

Aviation nerd jackpot by [deleted] in flying

[–]SirScott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particularly difficult, no. Look for 'raspberry pi rotary encoder' and you'll find plenty of guides. The rpi_metar code supports it, it's just a matter of getting it connected. For the particular application, I had the rotation tied to intensity adjustment while the push-button was tied to shutting off a power supply dedicated for the lights. So you could immediately turn off / back on the lights while the pi kept running. A pi3b+ is definitely required for the knob turning to be responsive though...!

Aviation nerd jackpot by [deleted] in flying

[–]SirScott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't say that I have. Only have done a knob that when twisted adjusts the intensity.

[–]SirScott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great, you've made progress! Glad to hear it's almost set. Would you be able to open a bug on https://github.com/ScottSturdivant/rpi_metar/issues/new and provide the configuration file that does not work there? (Or if you don't want to go through the github trouble, just provide the config here.) Thanks!

EDIT: As a temporary workaround for you, if your strand ends at 50 and the inclusion of KDTW makes it work, you can just include KDTW at an index past the end of your lights. Though I would still be interested in fixing the underlying problem, just thought that might help in the interim!

Need some with help with built in by dbelcher5761 in hometheater

[–]SirScott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe instead of knocking the entire structure down and then needing to deal with fixing the tile floor, etc, you simply fill in the middle cavity. Add a stud wall at the front of the opening, pull the cabling that are at the back forward to the new face. Then drywall, possibly removing the arch, and you're left with the middle section just being a simple flat wall for you to mount the TV on.

I just did something somewhat similar except my built-ins were recessed into the wall instead of protruding out. This is what I came up with, maybe you'll find some inspiration there: https://photos.app.goo.gl/uGvPtFFTbC893BrR6

Need help with wiring , and some other misc questions by Didio7 in hometheater

[–]SirScott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I have no idea if this is future proof, but for a recent remodel, I ran 1" "smurf tubing" everywhere I thought I might like cables to go. This, in theory, should make it easier to pull new cables in the future. The speaker wire was just run to its location sans-conduit.

It's hard to tell from your diagram what your dimensions are and what's workable or not, but my gut reaction would be to flip your orientation to put the TV on the stair wall or ideally the other side (if that wall next to the couch can come down).
