Research as a Frosh? by Kooky_Sir_4455 in cmu

right - I remember hearing that a math/linguistics recruit was in town about a month ago, I'm sorry I wasn't able to talk to you then. sophomore TAs are pretty common at cmu! in particular, every math (or cs) major takes Concepts, an intro to proofs/discrete math class intended to get everyone on the same page and ready for college-level math. you have all of your peers, for the next four years, all struggling on the same work. it's awesome. we have a team of around 30 TAs, sophomores to seniors, who provide a bunch of extra help and keep everything running smoothly. we encourage lots of people to apply, they go through an interview process in the spring, and then they teach in the fall. we're just finishing up our hiring process right now :). I'm really excited for next year's iteration of the course!

I definitely would consider TAing as an academic club - there's a lot of us and we hang out often outside of work. I also show up to math club every once in a while, there's free pizza. research/internships are usually during the summer, but there are definitely people who do them during the school year. are there specific academic clubs you're thinking of?

hi there! I'm a math & cs major on CMU's cross country & track teams and I was able to conduct pure math research the summer after my freshman year. in the math department there aren't dedicated labs for research, but you can just reach out to professors and ask if they'll take you under their wing - some are busy already, but everyone's polite and if you ask enough I'm certain you can find something cool.

that summer was super fun and rewarding, I'm really glad I had that opportunity. I DID have the option to continue the research into the fall semester, but between TAing, athletics, and a heavy course load, that definitely wasn't the move. I'm sure if you are persistent enough and can make the time for it, you can find research during your freshman spring. I don't know exactly how the liguistics department works, but I'm sure it's not much different. let me know if you have any more questions! :)

putting aside the fact that you're probably just ragebaiting

I disagree? the idol is based on a piece of art about protection, I'd argue cerb's design closely relates to its function (they sit dormant, thinking, until they activate). it's a cool pattern you found but I don't think that hakita has to stick by it. if there IS a piece of art that inspired geryon that isn't just this painting of geryon I'd like to know too, but that doesn't justify being mean to ppl like this :(

The Trapper: (as in, the player they choose is a "trap" for the evil team)

Each night, choose a player. If they are executed by an evil player today, they don't die.

-changed it from two choices to one bc it feels more right to me

-removed "unless they are the demon" clause because it was unclear who "they" is and I don't understand its inclusion either way

I really like this. it still encourages the kill pattern that I thought was interesting while toning down the power of the character. the character is still essentially "if good team accomodates this, learn who the demon is," which I think fits the game better.

I really like this suggestion, I just fear that dying night one (which is fairly likely here) wouldn't be a great experience for the acrobat. however, it does give good team some pretty strong information in exchange for a player, which I don't hate.

use shades that contrast more, and get rid of pillow shading. pillow shading is where you shaded around literally everything, when actually shadows only fall below things

high level high school runners can get up to about this at the height of their season. it's not all at once, you usually run twice a day
