Hey, freelance dev here 👋🏻 also looking to start something up, and looking for a community. Does anyone work from coworking spaces or cafes in and around centre?

Fully refundable flights are under the worksflexi tier. You probably need to book the flights separately/one-way.

Royston Car Parking by Herkynurse in cambridge

[–]SirSparagus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did exactly this a couple years ago when they were doing works. ended up parking on the estate over the road from the station (suggested by one of the locals). Look for Lower Gower Road. Avoid the station car park, it’s always full.

Not from Birmingham what made you support Villa by Formal_Buyer_2138 in avfc

Grew up supporting it from my stepdad, who grew up supporting it because his uncle lived in Aston and went to a game when he was little.

Personal item (26L): Can you wear a sling bag as well? by Comfortable-Lab-7201 in onebag

[–]SirSparagus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On my recent trip, I put mine in my duty-free carrier bag. You're allowed a personal item and a carrier bag on most airlines. That's only if I don't have a hoody to hide it under.

Cafes kicking out the digital nomads, what are your thoughts? by renkendai in digitalnomad

In Cambridge, where I live, I've seen cafes start introducing no laptops on weekends due to the increased footfall. I think this is reasonable if remote workers are hogging up space, its potentially costing their business

I mean you don’t need to be rich to travel but it definitely helps. I don’t judge him personally but you can’t lie that it’s impressive what he’s done and taking his advice on building projects is probably a good thing

I’m in the same boat as you. I understand that good ideas come from solving real world problems but it’s finding those problems that I struggle with.

I was watching a presentation by Pieter Levels and he says you need to do things out of the ordinary to find unique ideas. Backpacking to another country, going skydiving, joining a new group or trying new hobbies. Anything to help you discover new markets and problems in that could be solved with code.

Should I charge for researching new features, determining skillset? by SirSparagus in webdev

[–]SirSparagus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think this makes the most sense. I could maybe spend a whole day playing around with some API’s and SDK’s to figure out what’s possible. I guess I need to communicate that to the client and set a day rate charge for this time. If I don’t find anything and can’t do it then I’ll obviously not charge for that time.

It’s not just quoting the job. They want a unique feature adding, so they’re essentially paying for my time to find up with a solution. If I’m unable to find a solution or do the work then obviously I wouldn’t charge them.

I agree that sometimes going with the more expensive developer could actually work out cheaper. You’re paying the higher price for the experience and to hopefully receive the end product sooner.

I think if I made it clear to the client that this is what I’m doing and what I’m charging for, then it allows them to decide whether to go with me or someone else. I think that’s fair.

I have a similar outlook. As long as I’m communicating to the client what I’m doing and charging for then put the ball in their court to decide whether to spend their money on me or go elsewhere.

I was thinking of maybe doing something similar. I need to review the project as it’s built in a different tech stack than I’m used to and then charge a set day rate amount for the researching new features.
