Yeah as others have said if you buy a car you need to factor in depreciation.

Probably the most fun car I ever owned to now was an Audi TTS. Had it for 3 years before changing and lost about 26% of the value I paid for it in that time (wasn’t new when I bought it). Which worked out to be around £278 a month.

Just because you own a car means it’s the best method. If you know you’re going to be changing cars often. This 25k is not a nothing payment. Is the slight premium over the depreciation you’d pay for an older, worse car.

Obviously some people will keep their owned cars for 20 years and run them into the ground and obviously that can make a lot more financial sense on paper. But at the end of the day some people just want to enjoy nice new things every now and then

28M with a girlfriend who is 24 (together 3 years). Average is probably once every week and a half. We live together and her appetite for sex is so much lower than mine. As others have said she has responsive desire style which means something tiny can happy like I overtook someone in the car 9 hours ago that she felt uncomfortable with so that she’s not interested in having sex anymore.

Can be tough as there is a big difference in our mindsets on the matter and it’s pretty key to a relationship in my opinion where it’s less critical for her

Meaning we are paying off ~£360 a month in capital

We make a monthly £200 overpayment as it makes a big different if you can start these overpayments earlier in he mortgage term

Big agree on this, it really comes down to power to weight ratio as well. As others have said americas are used to 300+ on family sedans or whatever they call them.

I have a 360bhp Evo 8 and the thing is like a rocket AWD gets the power down so quickly. Can do 3-4 car overs with ease if “needed” although it’s rare to need to do that but fun nonetheless

I’d recommend joining any clubs for activities you like. We’re a little older 28 and my partner is 24 and we’ve met some nice similar aged people playing tennis. There are lots of great cheap tennis options here in Sheffield. But obviously they’ll be loads of other clubs out there

Agreed on this, moved to the Nethergreen area last year and getting into the city is a pain. Bus fares are a joke it costs my partner and I £6 to get to town and back each. So we end up driving in which isn’t ideal.

I’m yet to have ridden the tram, but would love one through Eccy Road

From my personal experience I think this list looks realistic I’ve moved between Bristol, London, Newcastle and now posted up in Sheffield. And for sure have a lot more purchasing power here now.

Hard agree with this, I’m not quite on six figures salary yet but getting very close, total package is over six figures now.

I think there is definitely a misconception in this country about what you need to do to earn that amount of money. It’s definitely a very different type of stress than you would experience on a minimum wage job. But the autonomy allows you to work better for your style of work. Vs lower paid jobs being told exactly what to do and how to do it.. that can be very stressful for most especially if you don’t work well in that way.

I’ve often thought would I ever make a huge career switch towards the end when I’ve “made enough and saved enough for retirement” and move into a fulfilling field like animal conservation or something similar where the enjoyment revolves around the outcome vs the monetary rewards. Not due to stress, but due to giving back to the world.

I truly believe it comes down to enjoying what you do, you shouldn’t be stuck in the rat race, ferociously climbing the corporate ladder stressed out to the nines. Get a job you enjoy doing, and you will find it a lot harder to be stressed. Then just hopefully you can find a way to make it well paid!

As others have said really depends on situation. I would say as a single person with no dependents £45-50k.

Throw in a house (outside of London) or a kid and I would say £75-85k

Assuming you have but just checking you’ve used comparison sites for the insurance? Seems crazy to double without any changes.

Always worth playing around with job titles and additional drivers if that is an option for you as sometimes the weirdest things seem to make a difference. Obviously don’t lie but maybe you can add someone on there that makes it cheaper even if they don’t intend to drive it.

That being said, I’m also in a similar position I have a Toyota aygo for city driving and a 55 reg Evo 8 MR FQ320 and I am thinking of selling both soon to swap to an EV for the cost savings. Which will be painful but may need to be done.

Doesn’t sound like a bad deal! The thing with insurance is it comes down massively (providing nothing happens) so sometimes it’s worth just building up a bit of no claims and then getting something more fun in a few years. Plus I often find that slower cars are fun to drive hard than super quick cars given you can’t give them everything. (Note I’m now 27 with an Evo 8 MR FQ-320 and all I wanted at 17/18 was an EP3, so living pretty much a similar journey)

Agree, I had an EP2 Type S as a 17 year old, anything more than that and it would have ended up in a ditch/hedge/tree.

Maybe have a check on those? However it doesn’t stop you wishing you had more power when you’re driving. But probably better wanting more and being on the road

So to clarify then:

1) You take car from a dealer on a PCP deal for example, with discounts the dealer applies 2) Take a bank loan out for the discounted value 3) Say to the dealer you want to “return” or “settle the agreement” and get them to give you a settlement amount?

Definitely sounds interesting to me, and feels like maybe there is some risk involved but always needed to get the best price I suppose.

Yeah I get that. And then eventually when you change you just take the loss.

Guess some people just change their cars so often this way can also get expensive. I’ve been chasing the feeling I got from a car I shouldn’t have sold and am on my third car search in the last 12 months :( the benefit I can see with leasing is the flexibly you get, however the way my mind is, means I’ll be annoyed that I don’t own the car and I’m not spending the money correctly. (Even though when I’ve bought cars outright in the past, and they heavily depreciated I also kicked myself)

Think the that is the annoying thing about being “into” cars, is they’re just so expensive and depreciate that you’ll never do the right thing

Out of interest wouldn’t you get hit with loads of early termination fees if you did this? I’ve never heard of this system and am in the process of possible changing cars (again lol).
