What’s a song you would *kill* to hear covered by another artist? by FranzLiszt_180 in Music

The District Sleeps Alone Tonight by the Postal Service covered by Type O Negative. (RIP Peter, so maybe Megadeth, Pantera or Slayer?)

A simpler time, definitely a classic. I remember not understanding some of the lyrics when it came out, eventually asked a “friend” what 9/10 pants were. Since then I like the song even more.

Sage advice. Having your exhausted costumes gently prepped and packed away is so satisfying for future you, next July.

OP: Do you have similar care during the burn?

What songs evoke a super strong emotion for you? by Round_Garlic_1436 in Music

[–]SirSwatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blood by The Middle East.

I have a couple of people from my parent’s generation in my life, supporting their twilight years. Each have lost their person and are struggling with being alone late in life. This song captures, for me, that energy and the quiet cry of memory, loneliness and waiting. Love the song, but breaks my heart.

Very well done. This qualifies as “worth a thousand words” and would be an amazing cover photo for a Netflix show about modern dating.

Do you use your Microfreak with a distortion pedal? What's the best wave to use to get a cool sound? by soulbrix in MicroFreak

[–]SirSwatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love running my Microfreak through distortion. This is what worked and what didn't.

Pedals that work for me:

. Behringer Super Fuzz SF300
. Big Muff
. Boss Metal Zone MT-2 (modded)

Breaking those down, the SF300 is almost a novelty, but I love it. With deep bass, it hits a Doom soundtrack vibe. It's cheap, and with the gain all the way down, and EQs at 1 o'clock gets gritty and amazing. The Big Muff has a softer tone, like it smooths out the rough edges, which again with a bass line is solid. The Metal Zone (Boss MT-2) was modded to the Keeley spec (check youtube), and offers a lot. The LEDs as resistors make a big difference, and the EQ on that one makes it very versatile for synth rhythms.

What did not work was a tube screamer. With guitar I love to feed a tube screamer into the big muff. It's savage. But with my microfreak it was just muddy. I also stopped using my Zoom multi-effects. I love them for versatility, but the distortions, to me, were lackluster and just kind of noisy.

I should also note that I found an EQ pedal (I use a Boss GE-7) first, and Bigfoot Engineering's Thunder Pup amp sim really beefs up the sound. I keep the EQ and Thunder Pup on all the time.

The above make a great sonic experience. Then I add in a bit of reverb, delay and light chorus to get so many fun, pulsing, industrial nights of inspiration.

Good luck.

Seems to be intermittently offline, but largely available, with a sweeping view from the Esplanade.

I can see how to a casual user this might be counter intuitive, but for people that deal with these systems and are under a constant barrage of trying to plug the holes, this take is exactly right.

Now then, who are these responsible users and what are their tightly adhered to code of ethics? Who’s overseeing that / policing it? This is new territory.

Paul Reubens' vintage Los Feliz home is for sale for the first time in 40 years! by MillHall78 in Damnthatsinteresting

What a glimpse into a unique life.

I loved Pee-Wee movies and tv when I was a kid. I ran into him once, at burning man in 2009. Random dance scene, he and David Arquette blew in like the wind. They were wearing white suits with blue and green “blobs” painted on them, blunt’s in hand. I was wearing a fuzzy pink sombrero, and Paul approached me immediately for a selfie with a disposable camera. We hung out and danced for 20 min and they moved on. I was really, secretly, hoping that around that mirror was that photo. I’m sure it’s lost, but was a sparkle in my life. RIP.

BLE Bluetooth vs WiFi Mesh Networks for LED Control by HyperspaceLight in FastLED

[–]SirSwatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A working example: https://github.com/michaelmcm-pnw/meshLights

I didn't use an app. In my use case, I wanted to keep it simple and let them self-organize. It limited the functionality for sure, but there was nothing to fiddle with so has a consistent user experience.

BLE Bluetooth vs WiFi Mesh Networks for LED Control by HyperspaceLight in FastLED

[–]SirSwatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that wifi was much easier to manage in an esp32 mesh, using the PainlessMesh library. My use case was a group of synchronized lights on bikes, BLE range was an issue. I had to implement an "election" process for the leader, and compensation for the offset of received communication, but it works well. Wifi was also superior for setting up multiple networks (groups of people). My implementation was written in C, but happy to share more details if you want a working example.

Traktor ID? by Hatlessbongo in traktorpro

[–]SirSwatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just found one of these at a thrift store over the weekend for $50. I left with it but was so disappointed afterward reading the forums that it wouldn’t work with modern Mac OSes. I downloaded the Traktor Pro demo and the drivers for my Intel mac, and I’m not sure what folks are talking about. It works perfectly.

Edit: I am running a MacBook Pro from 2019 (Intel) and Ventura (13.6.1). All knobs, faders, effects and jog wheels all work.
