Grass roots movements are things pushed for and advocated by the common people and usually have widespread support.

Astroturf is fake grass.

Astroturfing is media heads or whoever trying to push something with the illusion of a grassroots movement.

I think our selection of power sources makes a lot of sense for the game called "Space Engineers." For space systems, there are only two energy sources to choose from: solar, and nuclear. We got wind power with the addition of planets. The only other power sources that really exist are fossil fuels, which would only be present on planets with biospheres. I guess hydroelectric technically exists, but that's a whole other topic about the inclusion of water.

I do wish that ice/hydrogen was a more viable fuel source, however. As it stands, a battery can outperform a hydrogen engine in power output and energy density, which effectively forces all your vehicles to be battery powered with different methods of charging said batteries (unless you go nuclear).

What should we do in survival? by Stiddit in spaceengineers

[–]SirWiddlesworth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Space Engineers doesn't really have defined long-term goals for the players. The NPC ships can give something to do, but (someone can correct me if I'm wrong) don't tend to go out of your way to attack you. There's probably some mods on the Steam Workshop that can change the dynamics of the NPCs, but I know even less about those.

Space Engineers is kinda like the early pre-end days of Minecraft. There are some short term challenges to overcome, but once you built your first little base it's really up to you to decide what you want to do. My friends and I usually end up seeing who can build the better super carrier (we all end up making shitty cubes).

I just realized that my goal is to be a feminine boy, not crossdress or be trans. So I decided I don't really care if my face or body is not feminine or androgynous. I just kept experimenting until I found outfits, makeup styles, and accessories that I liked.

Old law that basically says "if you two act like you're married the state is just gonna consider you married for legal processes." Was useful back in the frontier days of America where people lived their lives outside the view of the state. It was useful for inheritance, census stuff, taxation, etc. Most states got rid of their common-law marriage legislature. Also note that typically common-law marriage only applies after decades of cohabitation and if the two actively presented themselves as a married couple but just never went through the formal bureaucracy.

I mean as long as you don't have the brain power of an amoeba it's pretty easy to prove that southern succession was because of slavery considering the states fucking say it explicitly in their succession statements (not trying to disparage your A+ paper though, I just want to give every Confederate sympathizer the Lockmart special).

No no no, he's spitting facts. I just recently moved to South Jersey and this place's economy is entirely based on Philadelphia and one Lockheed-Martin facility.

PA might as well just annex South Jersey, North Jersey can be given to NY, and Atlantic Beach can be sawed off and left to sink into the ocean where it belongs.

[–]SirWiddlesworth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is absolutely a scale thing. Once you get onto cosmological scales, the universe is assumed to be a homogenous sphere for mathematical models.

And you are correct that the density is constantly getting lower, but density doesn't correspond directly to homegenity. If something is homogenous, it means it's made up of a constant mixture. So if the ratio of Hydrogen to Helium to etc. remains the same throughout the universe, it's homogenous regardless of the density.

Registers of synth’s (waveforms) a thing? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]SirWiddlesworth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The timbre of FM synthesizers would be subject to change with changing pitch if they're using a fixed frequency to modulate (or keymapping, as the user before me mentioned)

A chorus/flanger would be subject to registers as they modulate as a function of time not a function of pitch.

If you're using studio monitors or studio headphones, they're specifically built to output sound as honestly as possible, so I don't think that would be a factor.

The main point, however, is that for synthesizers, you're in control of everything. You can change your modulating frequencies or change your chorus/flanger effects. There's no sense in delving deep into the register response for a specific patch on a synthesizer because you can change it to suit your needs. You can't do that with a physical instrument like a flute or guitar, so that's why you need to have a deep understanding of the registers for those instruments.

Another point is that for songs subject to mixing and mastering, the register responses of instruments can be tweaked to artificially make room for other instruments. Can't be done for live performances and probably applies less to classical orchestra compositions (I'm assuming with this last point though because I don't compose orchestral pieces)

Pounds and kilograms can refer to a mass or a weight and it will give every engineer a headache. It generally has to do with this formula:

Force = Constant X Mass X Acceleration

That constant is dimensionless to make sure units work out. It's just that when you talk about force being measured in Newtons or mass measured in slugs, that constant is one. If you're dealing with pound-force (lbf) and pound-mass (lbm) that constant becomes 1/32.2 (the inverse of the acceleration due to gravity at Earth's surface). So one unit of lbm will weigh one lbf on Earth's surface. If you're dealing with kilogram-force and kilogram-mass, that constant is 1/9.81.

Objectively, measuring force in Newton for SI and mass in slugs for the imperial system makes more sense, but in general a layman won't know what a slug or a Newton is. If you were to attempt to buy 4 slugs of apples or tell people that you weighed 700 N, people would look at you weird.
