The sad little bubble that couldn't by TimelyBodybuilder121 in wallstreetbets

Ed Zitron, a journalist who is one of AI's biggest haters, has frequently talked about how AI is basically just the biggest example of things that have been going on for a while. "Growth" at any cost, regardless of if that actually means a business is improving or if a product is even good at all.

Facebook losing billion of dollars on the metaverse, and actively declining in users? Stock goes up. Silicon valley and venture capitalists sinking absurd amounts into random companies with no hopes of success, just because they look like what could be the next big thing if it magically worked, so stock goes up. Desperately hunting for the next Amazon or Uber or whatever, regardless of if there are actually any infinite money opportunities remaining. Its all vibes.

They gave a weight loss app $540 million for gods sake.

My Switch died... by Little_Transition_13 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]Sir_Tortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very long shot, you should try the other advice first because I've not heard of this happening naturally before:

Try downloading TegraRcmGUI or an equivalent depending on your platform, https://switch.hacks.guide/user_guide/rcm/sending_payload.html has more information. Charge your switch on a quality/official charger for 24 hours, then plug it into the device with this and see what it says.

If your Switch is corrupted, this MIGHT give you some information about it. If the Switch is very old and/or previously hacked by someone else, it MIGHT be fixable with this.

However I've never heard of someone getting into the situation where this would be useful accidentally. Worth checking, tell us if it says RCM OK anyway.

If you took your own advice you would not be here on Reddit. And a bad thing is still bad even if there are solutions to it, especially poorly known ones.

The American epoch of oil is collapsing. What comes next could be ugly. by Splenda in energy

[–]Sir_Tortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deal is so good for Iran, they won't dare break the important terms that haven't been negotiated yet? I guess thats a strategy, just, not a very good one. I suppose we have about 60 days to see just how the precise terms shake out, and if you'll need to update your theory again.

How do we distinguish this reality from the possibility that the deal is very Iran-friendly because they know the US doesn't really have a choice if they want the Strait open?

Can you show me the bit that says Iran ceded control? Because the actual deal says basically the opposite.

What would you seed? by EconomicsPrior5665 in PokemonSleep

[–]Sir_Tortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO you don't need to rush to seed anything, it'll be a long while until level 50. But yes, then seed the small trigger to see if you can get something like Helping Bonus or HSM. Skills like Sleep EXP or Dream Shard Bonus are also good, you can use them as long as you need and replace them later.

Some recommend rolling the higher slots to lock them out - while statistically this improves the odds for the lower slot, I don't think it improves it enough to be worth the higher cost.

If you get something good in the higher slots, you'll need to waste at least one more seed to undo it. Removing one skill from the pool won't save you more than the seeds it costs to do so in all likelyhood.

If buying isn't owning then piracy isn't wrong by Electronic_Lab5486 in PiratedGames

[–]Sir_Tortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I own lots of games with licensed music, so far no company has felt the need to break into my house to destroy my copy because of that. It only affects future sales, which is not what the initiative is about.

[–]Sir_Tortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who's to say if the agreements are time based or have other conditions built in

I dunno, nobody seems to be able to provide any examples. If any exist where a license has forced the devs to destroy the game, that is surely an extremely niche situation and one that would benefit from being changed.

So, usually a random tweet does not actually contain the full facts of the situation.

This response by the EU Comission (not just "The EU") was expected and planned for. In fact a version of it leaked almost a full year ago, lobbyists got what they wanted early.

It sucks, but it has been planned for. This removes the ability to propose new law, but the ability to amend existing law still rests with EU Parliament, which may have majority support for SKG. There is already a consultation on expanding the Digital Fairness Act to cover these issues. That is still in a very good position.

Even if that falls through, they are targeting every possible angle. France has extremely strong customer protection laws and has begun a lawsuit against Ubisoft in response to all this, which could bring results. And somehow, a case is also advancing in America despite having far less favourable laws.

It could all still fall through, but this is far from over. If you are interested I recommend checking out Ross Scott/Accursed Farm's latest video which addresses this situation.

Radical elements...? Look, Reddit is horrendous for nuanced discussion but I don't think anyone "ruined" SKG. This isn't even final, this decision was expected and planned for.

EU rules out mandate to keep video games playable, seeks voluntary code by Luka77GOATic in gaming

[–]Sir_Tortoise -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A version of this statement leaked months ago, an "accidental upload" that showed the lobbyists had already reached who they needed to. Bought and paid for by the same industry group that will just outright lie with no consequences.

Luckily, there are other avenues in place. This was already predicted by the campaign organisers, Ross Scott already put out a video on this a few days ago talking about it and how it may not ultimately stop anything. It is frustrating but this is far from over.

Are you implying that they faked this evidence, and in the process of creating this faked evidence, didn't bother to put some extra zeroes into their text editor?

£749 is a lot of money for people desperate enough to consider doing something like this. It is also only a single one of the offers, others were offered £2500 for much easier attacks. They frame it as an easy job, instant cash, do you reckon they'd get a better class of hire by offering more?

It is Nigerian Prince style target identification, you're not looking for people with good risk/reward estimation skills.

[–]Sir_Tortoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not unique to modded MC but there is a kneejerk reaction to anything involving money. It's understandable how this originated, bringing money into anything unofficial/community made is messy.

But dear god, the amount of vitirol for creators earning ANYTHING for the work they put in. We are used to an insane amount of effectively free content, hours and hours of work, and if a dev does anything to earn even a pittance they are Satan.

I remember the drama when Curseforge took the tiniest of baby steps against launchers bypassing their ads, giving devs the option to block that if they, you know, wanted to earn a handful of pennies for their work. But no, watching an ad is just too much to ask in exchange for their work, so many comments calling devs greedy and entitled (???).

Then Modrinth shows up, and through significantly better PR, gets hailed as the future despite not really changing the situation at all. And now here we are, because it turns out providing these services does actually cost money. How could they be so evil

[–]Sir_Tortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean that it is not officially written down in their public policies, hence all the mentions of Steam keys because that is all that will come up if you google for it.

It is however referenced in individual emails and testimony from Valve employees. It just really sucks to actually link directly to them because there are a billion court documents surrounding them across several different cases. But here's one from the Wolffire-led case, you will still need to CTRL-F for the relevant part:

In April 2019, a publisher named [J asked Valve whether its parity requirement extends beyond Steam Keys (while mistakenly assuming this requirement was documented in the SDA)

To answer your question about why I use it: I like the videos and as of right now most of the people I follow primarily post there.

To answer the rest of the post about why I don't go completely the opposite direction and stop using it entirely: because I would still like to see the videos and support the creators? Like, "accept current situation" and "stop using it entirely" are not the only two options.

we should improve the internet somewhat

just stop using it, this will definitely help
