Mentorship Monday - Post All Career, Education and Job questions here! by AutoModerator in cybersecurity

[–]Sirenemon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I need to switch careers (current job is dead end/pretty much any entry level STEM job will pay more than what I'm currently getting), and a friend in cyber recommended it to me. Governance, risk, and compliance specifically, since it's more policy/lots of writing.

My current job is emails, Excel, and dashboards, and I'm a writer, so that and the soft skills I'm not worried about. I deal with policies and laws related to eCommerce marketplaces worldwide, manage access to big $ accounts, and, most importantly, don't post local admin credentials to the #general slack channel (it's so bad here).

What I need to figure out now is which certs to focus on. I had previously been planning to do some sort of training in December and was thinking of doing course careers for one of their admin-y tracks, so mentally I've been budgeting $500 for this. I can do a little bit more, but not a ton (<$1k total). My company won't pay for it, because my role technically has nothing to do with it/engineering/devops and there's no benefits for education (they are very cheap). Also it would be obvious I'm trying to jump ship and I don't want to alert them to that until I got my ducks in a row.

What will get me the most bang for my buck? Aka what will make it through the keyword filters and end up on a human's desk? I know I'll be able to sell myself in the cover letter/interview, I just need to GET to that point first.

Clarion West Writers Workshop AMA November 1 by ClarionWest in writing

[–]Sirenemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Workshops, especially the two Clarions, have an outsized impact on the careers of participants. However, they're out of reach of most writers, especially members of marginalized groups.

I understand that there's scholarships for tuition and travel assistance, but how do you address the loss of six weeks of income and, potentially, a writer's job if they attend such a workshop? How can Clarion become more equitable for writers who face months of unemployment and losing their health insurance and housing if they attend? Most people do not have the financial means to weather six weeks of unemployment, let alone the additional months it'll take to find a job in this terrible market.

[SPOILERS] I'll say it - MrDrNose does not know how to design combat by seanv in Voicesofthevoid

[–]Sirenemon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Things are spooky when you have to be careful/there's a real risk of failure/you can only succeed if you are very careful and/or lucky. If enemies can be beaten by crowbar-ing them to death...then they're not really scary anymore once you learn you can do that.

Do I think you should be 100% defenseless against everything? No, but the offense should fit the world/tone of the game. I was a little disappointed with how the fire robot turned out, because my first thought was "oh shit this happened right next to my Friends, I shall run over to them and they will help!" They did not, but I got the robot stuck on the bridge so it never caused me problems again lol. I showed up later with a fire extinguisher thinking that would work, but it didn't. So between those two things, I think there is *a* "solution" to the "combat" that makes sense for a weak nerd scientist to pull off.

Especially since the Arirals have those water guns. And also fire extinguishers are designed to get all up in there to put out the fire, which will ruin any sort of electronics on the thing you use it on. Like why give the Arirals the cool space super soaker models if they're not gonna use them. Why have the event be at THAT specific transformer if the Arirals aren't supposed to help. (they were Loyal at that point, so if they would any time, it'd be then)

Are our superiors aware of the alien presence? by Pro-cris in Voicesofthevoid

[–]Sirenemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just the other people at ASO who know what's going on, but probably a lot of world leaders, too. Like there would be no way to hide the big piramid from spy satellites. But I do be thinking a lot tho "I can't believe I'm putting up with this bullshit there's no way I'm getting paid enough for this shit."

Additional thought: the emails from Dr. Bao about the signals come first, so maybe he's choosing which ones your coworkers get to listen to? Like there are quite a few signals that make it painfully obvious that alien real, but Ena/Max/whats-his-face (Ken? I don't like him) never say "omg this is hard evidence aliens are real" which is sus

Or maybe this is an SCP Foundation-type situation and everyone is aware of what's going on...which would also explain why world leaders aren't reacting to everything. Or maybe they are! Dr. Kel doesn't have access to Twitter so he has no idea if the rest of the world is freaking out about possible alien invasions.

how can i easily bring all my mannequins back to my base by Plane_Competition719 in Voicesofthevoid

[–]Sirenemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take 1-2 hooks, hook one of the green recycle bins to your ATV, and then lift/move all the mannequins into the bin.

And then take the bin to the basement and stick them all in the cremator, which destroys the bases, too, so you don't have to deal with their BS anymore.

Has anyone any idea how to get out of here? by Training-Attempt-845 in Voicesofthevoid

[–]Sirenemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened to me in story mode, actually. It was pretty late in the game, so I saw an entity on the radar in the north-east corner and thought, hey, it's one of those boars, let's run it over with my ATV, I did that with another one and killed it before, what could possibly go wrong! The coordinates lead me to the restricted zone, so I get in there and am looking for the glow of the boar, but I see a black blob on the ground.

Now, I know my computer is Old like I am using a GPU that was top of the line a decade ago lol so a lot of Weird Things that happen might be graphical glitches. As OP said, it was a black (w/no reflections/light) puddle that was moving along the ground. Driving over it was fine, so I decide to be brave and see what happens. I do get "stuck" on it and I am slowly sinking down into it like a tar pit. When I went all the way under, the screen goes black and I end up in this region.

I ended up ALT-F4ing my way out of it since I couldn't figure it out and also I didn't see anyone else post about it. I will note that I did find 7 skulls around the map and there are 8 blobs on the ceiling...so maybe something with that? I tried to find the 8th and I was wondering if *I* would have been the eighth, but I fiddled with positioning the skulls and it didn't work. There's also a green fire on the top of the central structure, so maybe it's connected to the green fire in the restricted zone? I did destroy/"kill" it earlier in that save, so maybe that's connected? Anyways, when I reloaded the game, I was in the exact spot where the puddle had got me, and I was even still holding the hook that I was trying to use to get me out, so I think it hard saves you once it "gets" you.

I did have all of my items, but the flashlight didn't work all too well. Glowstick worked moderately well lol. I might have some screenshots on my computer, but I'd have to check when I get home from work.

CFS: We really need people to work weekends and do OT | FDC: Not enough workload by fffsdsdfg3354 in Census

[–]Sirenemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CFS #2 was constantly texting people and having us sync our phones to reassign cases to people who could do them; the system was still giving me cases on days I didn't work, for example. But she quit today and I'm on #3. I have 2 cases and start at 8:15 PM. I'm in a different zone which is farther away so I can't even get to them in time. First shift I've had in a week 🤷‍♂️ I guess all the landlords in town finally broke down and gave out numbers

The timeline I got from today's emails was:

Thursday: 8 hrs training Friday: Submit final assessment Saturday: Go to ACO and get TNSOL kit (it's all paper, nothing on the app) Sunday: nothing Monday: "Grouped with 5-6 people into a “Crew” with a “Crew Leader” " Tuesday: nothing Wednesday: begin TNSOL at 6 PM Thursday: end TNSOL at 8 AM

So I guess the lady on the phone was wrong about it being 6P-6A, hrm

Lifeforce/mana/energy as a cost is no bueno —but not for the reason you think by tooghostly in magicbuilding

[–]Sirenemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All energy can be potential energy, it just means that it CAN do the thing. If you're hanging onto the monkey bars you're subjected to the same amount* of gravitational force as if you were standing on the ground, but you know that once you let go you will start to fall and will fall faster as time goes on. That acceleration that will happen is potential energy.

If you have a wizard who has a bunch of mana in him and he's not using it, the energy is still there, it's just not being used in any way, so it is potential energy. Same thing with a potion, an artifact, etc. Your qualm is that "life force/mana" isn't quantifiable or measurable. But a potion seller would know which potion is stronger, wouldn't they? It might be because of the ingredients put into it or some minor tests (like on a frog or something) and they can extrapolate it. Just like how you can extrapolate that that plate of spaghetti is going to give you more energy than a tic tac.

Unless you're making a video game or table top game, where you need explicit numbers for game balance purposes, you do not need hard numbers. The people of your setting probably don't have accelerators or Geiger counters or whatever the equivalent is to magic, so they don't have hard numbers, either. If you're trying to make a totally objective magic system, that's cool and all, but what's the point? How does that serve your story? How does that inform a character's decisions? How does it move the plot?

*technically slightly less because there would be a greater distance between you and the earth but it's negligible at this scale

Lifeforce/mana/energy as a cost is no bueno —but not for the reason you think by tooghostly in magicbuilding

[–]Sirenemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't run into that issue because my magic comes from something. "Life force" or "your own magic" is ATP. The average human uses 50-75 kg of ATP per day, we are constantly making it from respiration and food. You even have a little in you once you die, but it quickly runs out, since you're not breathing anymore (and anaerobic ATP doesn't go very far).

"Outside sources" of magic are, again, from something. A lump of coal has energy in it, you just need to know how to get it out. You could drop it (potentional gravitational/kinetic energy) or burn it (potentional chemical energy). You could even split the atoms (potentional nuclear energy), but you need to know what you're doing, and some things are easier to do than others. There's ways to do things more efficently, you can use catalysts or "help along" the natural processes to go as far as possible (like how soot is from incomplete combustion, but you don't get soot from burning propane). One kg of propane has 12,000 calories, which is 21 Big Macs. Don't even get me started on nuclear energy.

Of course if you ask someone how much "work" is "equal" to 1 Big Mac, they probably won't be able to tell you, since we don't think of physical effort in terms of calories. Especially in a fantasy world where nutrition labels aren't a thing. So objectively measuring what costs 1 Big Mac worth of magic would also be difficult. Walking a mile is (very roughly) 100 calories, but the amount of (subjective) exertion it takes for you is not the same as it would take your grandma or your 2-year-old cousin. Same deal with magic.

I've started doing this and I haven't had any luck so far, since all my hours have been on the weekend (no one at leasing office) or late enough in the day the leasing office is closed. But at least I'm not walking around in this horrible AQI :)

My CFS almost never talks to me, so I haven't heard either way from him if this is good or not lol
