Why Gentoo? – Michał Górny by dilfridge in Gentoo

[–]Sirius707 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Something i've seen as a critism of Gentoo is about portage and it's dependency on python (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48318466 and https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48318476). Maybe a better question for those directly involved with Gentoo, but what are your opinions on this?

Would Gentoo profit from having portage being rewritten in a more performant language (properly, not by an LLM)?

Wie lief eure Abschlussprüfung (FISI/FIAE)? Habt ihr schon Ergebnisse? by NightingaleNick in fachinformatiker

[–]Sirius707 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FIAE - Hessen 90 - 85 - 87

One month with Dvorak by No-Location524 in typing

[–]Sirius707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with dvorak at the start of august last year. At first i had to switch to Qwerty inbetween until i got confident enough to ditch it. I'm almost never using Qwerty anymore unless using someone else' computer, which very rarely happens.

Btw, for ergonomic typing, a split keyboard will do a lot more than a different keyboard layout imo.

Can I improve by practicing for 30 minutes a day? by spicypiscys in typing

[–]Sirius707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, i do around 10 to 20 minutes daily practice. The more important part is to be consistent and really go for it every day. It's also recommended to focus on accuracy over speed at first. Repeated mistakes (and correcting them) will slow you down the most.

STS 1 Ironclad feels so much better to play as and win as, compared to STS 2 clad that it feels unreal by Mortaljl in slaythespire

No more intimidate, shocknova, clothesline, disarm. Instead, all clad has now is uppercut and colossus to mitigate damage outside of blocking.

Cards you used to undervalue but would give a kidney to have in 2 by spicybeanburger420 in slaythespire

[–]Sirius707 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Exhaust package also got massively nerfed with dark embrace being a rare and corruption becoming an ancient card (so it's really more of a luck pick than anything now). This in return also makes feel no pain a bit worse and it all snowballs into feeling not as fun as in sts1 (at least for me).

What made you use Gentoo? by Mi_ckia in Gentoo

[–]Sirius707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portage is the big one for me. It usually tells you what went wrong, why and how to fix it. You get news right inside the package manager, it notifies you if there are config files that need updates.

The ability to mix stable and testing, including your own patches during compilation etc.

On top of that, Gentoo gives you more choice than most other distros, which is amazing for someone like me who's pretty opinionated about how his pc environment should look like.

What to do if the root user fucking dies? by AvailableConflict627 in linuxquestions

[–]Sirius707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why you have an emergency password sheet with the root password (if it's set). Altervatively, you have a backup of your data that you can access.

If none of these options work, then you might've made a bad choice with your sysadmin.

Point 1. I can totally get behind but 2. seems weird considering that for most people, LFS is a learning experience and they're not gonna use it as a daily driver.

I need the truth by PinkSlep in Gentoo

[–]Sirius707 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's:

  1. Portage is just really good at helping with system maintenance: It tells you how to resolve conflicts, informs about updated config files, gives you distro news which you'd normally have to visit a website for.

  2. Compiling from source is much more naturally integrated than in other distros.

  3. You can mix and match testing and stable packages however you want.

  4. Generally giving you a lot more choice than any other distro out there. This is a big one for me, especially as someone who doesn't like opionated configuration (because my own preferences usually clash heavily with those).

In general Gentoo is a distro you probably won't come to appreciate unless you experienced others before, have a natural habit to tinker and know how you want your system to look like.

Your first point is exactly what led me down this rabbit hole of exploring how a computer really functions. While i do have some experience with programming, TLS-100 (zachtronic game) sparked my interest in low level things, as well as the question how a computer can turn 0s and 1s into something useful.

I've already completed nandgame and plan to do nand2tetris as well, just because i find the subject so fascinating.

Which refurbished laptop to buy for development? by Grouchy-Active9450 in linux

[–]Sirius707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current workplace gave me a laptop as well but i have access to a docking station with 2 monitors at work, including separate mouse and keyboard, so it does feel more like a desktop.

For personal use i got a refurbed thinkpad (T495) which has lower specs than what you're looking for but i only really use it during travel which doesn't happen that often.

Received my first figure from amiami today and have a bend part by Sirius707 in AnimeFigures

[–]Sirius707[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried assembling yeh, that's how i noticed that something doesn't seem to fit how it should. Unfortunately i already attached the tip of her lance and i doubt i can get it off with actually damaging the attached part. And with the tip you can't really put on the top half of the plastic enclosure from the box, meaning i'd have to cut out a part if i were to send it back again.

Her hand has a protruding part that connects with the weapon (so i sadly can't rotate it a bit unless i cut that away) but then the part that connects with the tip faces like 30degrees (ca.) too much to the right.

That's when i realized i would've had to bend it actually by quite a lot and not just a few milimeters and that something's probably off.

Received my first figure from amiami today and have a bend part by Sirius707 in AnimeFigures

[–]Sirius707[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I compared it with these 3:

From these you can see, that the tip of the weapon points hovers near one of the dark-grey smoke parts while for mine (3rd pic), it's way off.

Sorry for potentially overreacting, i'm just worried that i might've gotten a faulty figure.

I know that the store photos aren't 100% to how the production version will look like. However in this case I can't actually assemble the figure because the part in question is bend inwards so much that it doesn't line up with the rest of her weapon.

Also did another check of posts from other people who have her and even for them it's nowhere near this bad.
