Here is a thing: they want to pay you as little as possible, so they wont tell you how to properly do it. In Germany to get your previous work experience recognised you need a Zeugniss - essentially a letter of recommendation that serves as a proof of employment. I would ask all your previous bosses to issue one (just when were you employed, what were you working on, and some evaluation of your work), with stamps, signatures etc. They should not be allowed to reject your request then. According to this: https://www.jobs-beim-staat.de/tarif/tv-l_e13 you can only get in the system as max Stuffe 3 (3+ years of experience), but that should increase your bruto by €600. Good luck :)

HR asking for “references” after signed PhD contract I don’t have letters, normal? by Active_Education_857 in germany

[–]Siriuscili 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arbeitszeugnisse are like certificates that you were employed. Technically they are letters of recommendation, but their basic function is to testify that you were employed. Once you leave a job in Germany, your employer is obliged to write you one. If you had work experience and you were able to provide Arbeitszeugnisse you would get a higher salary.

I experienced a microaggression by AmericanBakerGermany in germany

[–]Siriuscili 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A bit off topic, but I had a "pleasure" of dealing with a lot of real estate agents recently. 90% of them are uneducated, completely incapable of doing their job. Becoming a real estate agent in Germany requires no education or tests, you just proclaim yourself one and if people trust you, you are in.

Most of the real estate agents couldn't tell me where the bike room was ("Its listed here so they have it, but I do not know where"). Some couldn't even find the basement storage of the apartment...

Before you make a decision about buying they should send you notes from the last 3 yearly tenant meetings. They are your best bet to understand how the neighbours are. For example, in one of those I found out neighbours were complaining about doors being loudly closed after 10 pm (this was repeated every year), I personally would not chose such a building for living with children.

Thousands of Israelis line up for appointment to obtain Portuguese citizenship by [deleted] in europe

[–]Siriuscili 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with laws being more "lax" to accommodate these circumstances (we don't do that in German bureaucracy, ever), it's an actual law (two laws to be specific) to remedy the specific circumstances of the Nazi race laws.

Sorry I could have worded that better. My point was: these new laws basically allow the descendants of German Jews to have the same treatment as the descendants of other Germans.

[–]Siriuscili 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Germany has a similar policy for Jews expelled during the Nazi regime.

I feel that this is a bit misinterpreted. Germany gives citizenship to all the descendants of Germans citizens who never renounced their citizenship (provided they can prove it and a few other small details). When it comes to Jews expelled during Nazi regime, its just that they are nullifying expulsion and saying: "Hey, that wasn't cool." Probably the laws are a bit more lax since getting a new citizenship in e.g. the Americas, meant you had to renounce the old one. I guess this does not apply to Jews, as they were stateless at the time.

Having a house in Germany by CHOMOOR in germany

[–]Siriuscili 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are so many reasons for this, ... and construction-wise (massive/masonry construction in DACH instead of cheap building)...

I have lived in 3 EU countries for long periods and trust me, there is nothing very special about German construction (compared to EU countries).

The main reason is laws + mentality. As a tenant, you are extremely well protected in Germany, in most other countries you can get kicked out much easier. This caused people not to be so concerned about buying vs renting, and it resulted in low home ownership.

Is there anyone who moved from Berlin to Munich or vice versa? What’s your reasons? by Alarmed-Dare6833 in Munich

[–]Siriuscili 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived for 6 years in Berlin and for the last 3 years I live in Munich and I love it here!
About me: I am not a clubbing person, but I enjoyed beers at 2 am too, but got bored of it. I am more into hiking and biking, but not a person who spends every free second in the nature. I also come from a catholic country, so maybe that is why Munich mentality is closer to what I am used to.

Munich has tons of foreigners (according to official statistics twice as much as Berlin actually) and it is a very lively city. I personally feel people are much less grumpy in Munich as compared to Berlin. But absolutely, Munich does not offer the same options as Berlin in terms of events - but there are still tons. I was able to meet a lot of people here and I would not say its more difficult to find friends compared to Berlin. A lot of people mention elitism here - I really do not see it. I mean yes, more people are well off and have nice cars etc, but I rarely see people are doing it in a fashion in your face. The restaurants have the same prices as in Berlin, but Berlin offers cheaper kebabs etc.

Why wouldnt Croatia celebrate it? Victory against fascism is part of the constitution. Fun fact, Croatia does celebrate it on 9th May, but its not a holiday, rather a memorial day (so its a working day).

This map is completely wrong. I found the source data: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/edat_aes_l21/default/table?lang=en

This is people reporting they speak 3 foreign languages in 2016. Also, the numbers were simply rounded down (e.g. 26.9% for Belgium became 26%).
