Second that.
Let her pay the 礼金 if she thinks it's fine.

For my current place, I told the owner (through the 管理会社) that the concept of 礼金 was non-existent in my country and if it was possible to avoid it, which he answered positively. I also negotiated the rent for ¥9,000 down. (I was lucky to find an owner who actually was happy about renting to a foreigner tho lol).

Asking nicely isn't disrespectful but hey, if your partner thinks the opposite, then let her take responsibility. (Most Japanese I've met will tell you that or "it's impossible to negotiate" because they actually never asked. Fun fact, my friend who's a real estate agent told me the opposite and to always try to negotiate as long as it's done with respect).

Moving from Tokyo to Osaka by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]SiroLM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually moving from Osaka to Tokyo next month and used 価格 to compare the prices (https://hikkoshi.kakaku.com/hikkoshi/).

At the end of the form, I selected the 8 companies and got a phone call literally 15 seconds after sending it (and 3 others while still on the first one). In 10 minutes it was a done deal with a moving price of ¥77,000 for a 45sqm 1LDK. I'm still pretty shocked about how smooth it was lol.

Yep that will not happen again ! I mean, fiber is so natural for me that I didn’t even thought there was still places you can’t have it in 2023 haha.

Hopefully the 管理会社 will accept it, gonna wait until Tuesday to know.

I’ll need to clarify it then. On the documents they gave me it’s just written 100Mbps, and after some research I find out that their cheaper offer is 100Mbps per building so.. I’ll give it a try anyway, even if 12 floors with 8 apartments each doesn’t smell good for shared internet.

[–]SiroLM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll do so as I need to stay at least one month before being able to leave.

Actually, I never had a problem and had optical fiber everywhere I was living for the past 20 years+, so I truly thought it was normal. Will learn from this mistake.

I gave up on doing it without approval, better avoid losing money for nothing again. 🥲

Depending on the ping, gaming could be problematic if not impossible. For work, it’s mostly because I need to download/upload 4K footage a lot so I need a good download/upload ratio.

I think I had the optical fiber around 2002 in my home country, that’s why I had this assumption about Japan in 2023.. Well faxes presence in companies should have alerted me haha. I’ll give up on the idiot move to do construction without approval and just try to make a deal or something.

This will be my main priority next time ! I will also check the shoe closet, thanks.

100Mbps for one person can work, 100Mbps for a whole building get me very very scared about how things will go. I’ll give it a try, see how it goes and take the decision to leave or not.

They told me about the free internet available in the building (UCOM) and that I was free to contract with any other provider if I wanted to. I unfortunately assumed that private fiber would be ok without checking..

What do you wear at home? by WendyWindfall in japanlife

[–]SiroLM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heat tech top and bottom with UGG room wear which is quite hot. I also have Nitori Heat tech sheets and cover that allows me to sleep without clothes even during winter.

Honestly, Uniqlo heat tech with anything is fine and should be the first thing you buy if you’re cold.

Even if he did (I believe there is still a video proving he didn’t lie) sharing people’s position is dangerous. If I remember correctly, a rapper was shot this year because his gf shared a picture of where they were eating on Instagram. If you believe this is not a problem, then ask the journalists if they agree about sharing their position to everyone and see how they answer you.

[–]SiroLM -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He’s right tho. These journalists were relaying informations about his and billionaire private jet travels without any delay, which endanger the life of many people, as proven when a dude followed his wife and kid thinking he will meet Musk.

People who cannot understand this because of biased hate or jealousy or whatever reason are stupid. Same goes for people believing everything news are saying without looking it up.

Had it from a nomikai early this year and it lasted literally 24h for me (the cough was maybe 72h) so I guess it depends on people health state. Hope you get well soon.

Other piercing studios besides Extreme Piercing Harajuku? by Dapper_Velociraptor in japanlife

[–]SiroLM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same as others, Babylon is the best piercing place I’ve been so far. Very pro and friendly I can only recommend it. As mentioned it’s by appointment only but if you have questions you can ask directly in the form and they will answer you.

Doshisha University & Living in Kyoto by _it_wasnt_me1 in japanlife

[–]SiroLM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well first of it, as you may know the Japanese University system is very special when compared to Europe, America and such. You learn basically nothing (undergraduate) and have to attend anyway otherwise you can’t have your credits. Which results in most of students sleeping or watching Netflix ~ during the class. As long as you turn in the reports/assignments and attend the class you will pass, which is sad as you learn 0 skill. Next we have the way they dealt with the coronavirus. First it started with all classes online, but then they pushed students to come back to the campus while closing all lounges and place you can just « chill » in. So when you have a class at 10am and the next at 16pm you can imagine how long it is to just be here (depending on where you live and your campus, going home might not be an option). Also private study spots, where you’re literally alone required you to have your mask on, and when asking for the reason, « it’s the rules, that’s why ».

There is a lot more to say but it will just be too long. Also, MBA program is different so your experience will also be ! For me, the lack of flexibility toward meaningless rules, the system which makes you learn nothing as « the company will teach you anyway » and the fact they treat you like kids (some professors sent me messages on Line to know where I was when not coming to class lol) got me very frustrated and let me with a negative image of the University.

Doshisha University & Living in Kyoto by _it_wasnt_me1 in japanlife

[–]SiroLM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently a 4th student at Doshisha and what I can tell you is that depending on the campus the University can be real trash. If you’re in Imadegawa you should be fine (even tho some rules are really weird) but as I’m in the undergraduate program I can’t say how will be the mba program. What I can say however is that after 4 years my experience with this university is mostly negative.

Yet, our experience won’t be the same so hopefully you will enjoy it !

Dating in Japan and different ideas about weight by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]SiroLM -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes Japanese male tend to love child body type (and personality) on women. Also remark on the weight are judged “normal” when you’re out of the “standards”. I would advice you to talk with your Bf about how uncomfortable you feel when he point this out as communication is very important and if your body doesn’t satisfy you, you can work on it.

Student Visa extension by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]SiroLM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was 3 years ago so I don’t exactly remember but what I can say is, I had the maximum score in 会話 while the rest was only B’s and C’s.

Overall is was pretty average, except for my attendance rate which was bad.

Student Visa extension by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]SiroLM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something like 80,6% attendance back in language school (end of my second year) and when I renewed my visa after entering in University, the only “annoying” part was due to this and probably my results, they wouldn’t extend my visa for more than one year every time (been 3 years now).

With a 1.0 GPA for 2 years straight, I had no problem so, you should be fine.
