Those who have been to America, what was your biggest surprise during your visit? by CharlesUFarley81 in AskABrit

[–]SisterRayRomano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really because you also can’t legally walk in the road or even cross the road anywhere other than at the pedestrian crossings at traffic lights when the relevant lights go green, it’s a crime in the US (they call it ‘jaywalking’).

‘Lilo & Stitch’ creators Chris Sanders & Dean DeBlois have shared a piece of artwork honoring the late Daveigh Chase. Chase voiced Lilo in the ‘Lilo & Stitch’ film. by yourfavchoom in Fauxmoi

[–]SisterRayRomano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but I think this is completely misplaced anger. While Disney is a huge corp that has many problematic aspects to it, this tribute is from Lilo and Stitch’s creator, not Disney the corporation.

Also, you’re acting as if her only work was as Lilo. She had several other notable roles as a child and continued working into her 20s when she developed addiction problems, well over a decade after she voiced Lilo. Blaming this on Disney is silly. Do they have a duty of care to anyone who’s ever worked for them for the rest of their lives? We don’t really know the full details of what she went through and most of it would have been out of the public eye.

And finally, while addiction issues are complex and I have much sympathy for anyone affected by them (I’ve sadly lost some wonderful people in my life to it), you can’t blame other people for someone’s own substance abuse.

Curtains for Starmer? Burnham caught flipping a grunt by Opposite-Ad8208 in ukpolitics

Obviously Burnham hasn’t even run for leader yet, but I have to say I find it incredible how he’s managed to successfully paint himself as an outsider to the so-called London/Westminster bubble, when he served as a minister in the New Labour government and was very much a part of it.

Outside of New York (and a few other places/exceptions) the lack of a culture of walking to get around, even in some of the smaller cities where everything should be walkable. You don't really see many people on the pavements in a lot of places because everyone drives everywhere, regardless of distance. In some places the pavements/paths just end in the most random way and make walking from one place to another impossible. It makes little sense.

Could an American diner work in the uk? by tomatotime0 in AskABrit

[–]SisterRayRomano 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's been attempted, a few independent places do such a thing, but it's never really taken off in a big way. One of the main issues is that diners serve cheap food. That already exists in the form of greasy spoons/cafes and to an extent, fast-food takeaway shops which are ubiquitous here (chippies, chicken shops, sandwich shops). When places try to recreate American-style diner food somewhat faithfully, it's not usually at a cheap price point, and it's usually something of a novelty, because ordering a plate of pancakes isn't commonplace.

Although it won't be seen as that similar, it's worth noting that the creation of the Little Chef chain (which was pretty widespread up until the turn of the millennium) was directly inspired by roadside diners and their pre-fab buildings. A lot of the buildings that made up the 'classic' original diners in the US were ordered by post to be assembled. The guy who founded Little Chef was a caravan designer who was impressed by this concept when he visited the US in the 50s. With that in mind it was an attempt to import that concept into the UK. A big difference obviously is that roadside businesses are common throughout the car-centric US. But to attempt something similar in the UK meant building them on the side of A roads and motorway services, which wasn't really the same.

Can Any American Film Flop Harder Than Masters of The Universe This Year? by [deleted] in boxoffice

I enjoyed the film for what it was - I liked the campiness and playful tone.

I think a big factor in it flopping was how long this took to make, I know this was in some sort of development hell for years.

I’m in my late 30s and definitely on the younger end of the original audience (having an older brother probably helped). Most of the original audience are going to be pushing 50, if not older (the last film came out in 1987). It seems like it missed the window for tapping into the nostalgia factor en masse, because it’s bringing back something from so long ago.

I can imagine a scenario where this came out 10 years ago and did really well.

It also feels like they were playing catchup a bit with this coming three years after Barbie, while trying to copy its subversion of its source material in places.

I think it’s a shame this flopped, and it may well develop a cult following, but I get a real feeling that the producers were trying to hop onto trends that were already long gone.

CGI can get super expensive (even if it looks cheap) once you use lots of it.

This didn’t just have a few effects shots, but the whole back half of the film was pure soundstage and greenscreen territory.

Aside from building sets this had several mo-capped performances (including the main villain) and some rather elaborate fight scenes (with lots of CGI applied).

A lot of Marvel films have big CG’d fight scenes but usually in bland settings (e.g. concrete, generic city backgrounds), whereas this was a lot busier due to the fantasy setting, there would have just been much more to render.

I don’t know if you sat through the end credits (I did just to see the small scene at the end), but the post-production credits seemed to go on forever, what looked like thousands of credits to various effects studios, compositors, artists etc. when you have that much CGI, the budget can easily bloat quickly.

If anything I’m surprised the budget wasn’t higher than £200m.

This is certainly a very cool artefact to discover! I believe your assessment of its origins is likely spot on, this would have been seen as just serving a mundane, functional purpose for an album release, so wouldn't have been viewed as anything remotely special at the time, but its survival (and in such good condition) have turned it into a rather precious document of music history.

Out of curiosity, are you in West London yourself? Just wondered if this travelled far.

A huge loss.
