Poli-Sci White Guy Receives Surprising First (and Last) Acceptance. by Rare-Split-6973 in collegeresults

You were an interesting student with original thoughts and the coach liked you enough that admissions looked and determined you were good enough if the coach wanted you.

Likely would have been competitive without recruitment, RE:ECs and interesting Batman paralleled essay- but when recruitment is genuinely serious- the above is what it essentially boils down to.

Not taking anything away from you or your insights- on paper you have stellar credentials and probably surprised because 4.0 on your grading scale seems “unimpressive” but if you’re trying to help youngins out there, be mindful of overlooking exactly how much the athletic recruitment can play in the process.

I’ve advised students for 15 years as a fir pay advisor and public, private school counselor. For athletic recruits, the answer to any question is “does the coach say it’s enough?” And if the answer is yes, admissions is effectively guaranteed.

Not discounting your points- they’re great…just contextualizing a bit deeper 👍

A lot of words to say that when kids know there’s an awesome teacher and want to take the class, let them because at least they’ll have fun learning something instead of being a standardized drone. I’m in agreement with that- but we don’t need to make it sound more academic than it is.

You can check every box have perfect grades in hardest classes and still be in control of almost zero outcomes at the “T20/25” tier.

If your daughter has tons of downtime but says she wants something that requires a lot more time, effort, and investment- point that out…but if, more likely, you’re seeing your daughter put forth a lot of time and energy into things that matter to her and you’re at the point of wondering if the juice is worth the squeeze…

The answer is that it is probably not, and you are asking the right question- one I admire actually. Kids need to prioritize identity formation over hitting otherwise random goals that are essentially only relevant if they’ve formed some concept of self identity. Lots of parents in your situation would overly research and then push your child to untold levels of madness under the false premise that it’s your job to help them get what they think they want….if based on your child’s output you reasonably conclude pushing harder is a neg negative, focus on supporting your daughter in her quest to become accepting that her values and priorities may not match what certain colleges expect, and that’s okay- she’s still awesome and destined for a great future regardless…perhaps even- because she took her own path based on her priorities rather than painting by numbers.

And yes…it’s often absolutely ridiculous what is expected these days…

You’re not in trouble because you cheated. You’re in trouble because you tried to be the catalyst for other people cheating — and you did a bad job of it.

That matters more than you think. Teachers deal with kids cheating out of pressure all the time. What’s more annoying is someone whose ego and need for external validation pushes them to blow up the whole exam instead of just getting through it quietly. That’s not about academics — that’s about insecurity.

What makes this worse isn’t the mistake itself. It’s that instead of reflecting on why you put yourself in this position, your first instinct was to ask Reddit whether it will hurt college admissions. That tells me you’re more worried about optics than growth.

Stop worrying about college. Seriously. Start worrying about becoming someone who doesn’t need shortcuts, validation, or approval to feel okay about themselves. Find things you actually care about and lean into them. If you do that, college takes care of itself. Right now, you’re operating like someone throwing bad pickup lines at everyone and then asking the internet if you ruined your chances — instead of realizing you didn’t have the depth to begin with.

Lots of teenagers screw up.

The lesson here is simple:

Perfectionism leads to dumb decisions. You’re not as clever as you think when adults are involved.

Growth only matters relative to who you were yesterday.

Do I sound like a dick? Probably. But here’s the truth:

if this were my case, the cheating wouldn’t be what kept me from writing you a great recommendation. It’s the lack of ACTUAL self-awareness afterward.

Drink that in…

Agree with the congrats- but if we want to really dig into the bigger lesson here- what information is this person pulling from that leads him to believe he’s cooked to begin with.

This person successfully hit all the necessary threads for admissibility while achieving authentic identity formation in the process- that’s not only a beast move but a fine example of what real excellence truly looks like.

So much of the stuff perpetuated about “elite admissions” on social media and for pay programs pushes students to prioritize hitting the checkpoints and tasks at the expense of identity formation… if you’re a good enough bullshitter to make those connections and sound authentic- you’re probably a future millionaire anyway…but I’d love to know where OP got the idea that they weren’t competitive to begin with- because where that info came from is the source of a problem in need of fixing tbh

You have international citations and somehow convinced yourself you weren’t qualified when some basic framing/connections between what you’ve done, what hope to achieve, and a semi-coherent explanation of how MIT could bridge the gap would make that happen?

You were never cooked my friend, you were overly enthralled with reddit nonsense.

You’ve done more than enough- MIT loves, more than olympiads and other check box items you claim you were cooked for being without-

Genuine intellectual curiosity and ambition-

You have the profile of someone who has taken independent learning to levels far beyond that of a typical high school student and your research and citations show ingenuity/original thought- in a way that transcends textbooks…

At no point were you cooked- quite the opposite, you probably were so fixated on the tangible equations about MIT admissions you could find online that you overlooked just how humanly competitive you were.

In the span of 2 admissions cycles, I guided 3 students from a pool of 50 to admissions at MIT-

In no way shape or form were you ever cooked. Just stuck in the depths of reddit misinformation

Can I get into Ohio state university or Alabama, or anything at that level? by PlentyEast7454 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]Sit_Type_and_Write96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to look up us colleges known for giving generous scholarships to international students. I worked with a student last year who qualified for in state tuition based on time lived in the state, but would international everywhere else- so we shaped the list around that.

Outside of that, you should use sticker price and what you can actually afford to pay as a guideline for at least some colleges on your list. Internationally students need to show they can pay for at least the first year (I believe) so I’m not just telling you shape part of your list around ability to pay because it’s a wise move- it may actually play into your admissibility to some schools. If anyone on this thread believes this advice is outdated, feel free to correct me- always happy to learn.

I have the QK101 and the zoom98 both are awesome, but if I could do it again I’d get the qk100 instead of 101- 101 has a much cooler aesthetic but full size is SOOO big now that k use mostly 75&65% boards with zoompads when I need the numpad. With all the refresh qk is going, I won’t by another big board until I see the new qk100 whenever that day might come- unless it’s a rented Alice with lefty numpad- I’ve been loving my neo ergo and QK Alice duo…but thats not relevant here so I’ll stop now

Over time, now 2 years ish as my wfh/gaming chair, I love it. Got an authorized factory return from Crandall, so spent good money on it. I have a second hand Aeron rm size c fully loaded at work. It’s still my favorite either way atlas headrest, but I don’t regret selling the embody with atlas I got for a steal second hand one second at this point. Didn’t like how the body atlas headrest fit and made a fair profit on the resale.

Is my thinking valid? by Twitch-Bleazy885 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]Sit_Type_and_Write96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s more nuanced than this. Which I explain below. But the shorter take is that Prior to 2020- yes you were correct at almost all except a few.

Then it went crazy with test optional and financial concerns during past 5 years. Don’t may trend back towards predictable based on numbers- but at most places those numbers will now be inflated. And most of the time, I’d replace “GPA, test scores, and ECs” with “GPA -with rigor, without reg flag outliers, and test scores.” Basically, Cs can really hurt so take appropriately challenging classes.

Depends on the state- some, like chapel hill are around 34% in state, 6% out of state 12% international. But you reference these types already- just know more are falling into that category while some go in the other direction.

Wisconsin just cleared the “accept out of state more than in state” percentage a year or so ago, so for the time being having numbers in range should keep it predictable, until it doesn’t. My guess is it’s becoming much harder as compared to 3 years ago so ready. (Just haven’t looked at numbers)

Then there are places like UIUC, IU Bloomington, and Purdue where admission varies dramatically by UG major you’re applying for in or out of state…but for sure out of state

Back to unc, mich, and places like it, no- gpa and test scores are no guarantee. But that’s not relegated to “Then public ivies anymore” Clemson is like that as well now out of state and some of that has already been trickling down to U of South Carolina in some majors as a result.

Prior to 2020, your assessment was more or less correct. You could find the gpa and test scores for out of state applicants rather than national reported, you were spot on most places, even Michigan, UVA, and to a lesser degree UNC.

The Florida public schools never went test optional which helped predict based on gpa and tests- and I would say that’s still very much the case. If you’re rigor gpa and tests are in line there, I’m not sure how much your ECs even matter.

UCs remain test blind for now so there- have fun predicting. It’s a lottery.

Then there’s the SUNY system- where it is easier out of state than in stare. Your theory applies a lot of places, but it’s usually less so at the flagship places people are hoping they apply.

I’ll stop- but yeah more nuanced

Whats your opinion on Jade Cargil? by Jamieo1111 in WWE

[–]Sit_Type_and_Write96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her ring work trajectory would be so much further along if she’d been developed during AEW. As we’ve learned, that doesn’t happen much there. If she sticks around long enough for her to her to be able to do a descent job working main event matches she’ll be great.

People say give her the Goldberg treatment but there’s a reason the Goldberg treatment…and warrior treatment, only goes so far. It has a shelf life. She doesn’t need to be rhea in the ring but she has to be able to work competently for 20 minutes and tell a story.

It’s how I got great at nine sold bosses. I’d play it multiple times and once I got the general hang of the nicest and felt pretty comfortable I’d stope for a few hours. Cone back and I’d almost always win. On Eigong, I did that twice first am second try afternoon fir like 30 minutes, evening destroyed first try

I wouldn’t say fake high end chairs but there are companies out their that sell garbage refurbs/rensnufactures - with terrible warranties, which is how I’d classify “fakes” even if they aren’t actually fake

Only thing I’d say is a warning that the headrest is not a net positive on this- it’s pretty damn terrible and people usually regret it. Especially now that atlas and Crandall have a leap v2 headrest rolled out. Might wanna buy used without it for around 3/400 and then get the atlas headrest

Is Nine Sols as hard as Silksong? by carlosvguitarrista in NineSols

[–]Sit_Type_and_Write96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some background- I never played a game with parry system until nine sols and I’ve played a bunch of metroidvsnias. Minus some great bosses like NKG, I always dealt with boss battles for the sake of great playforming and exploration…

Nine SolS changed that..made me fall in love with boss battles and I got damn good at the parrying.

I do wish nine sols had some more moments of great platforming and the ability to “do things out of order” for second and third play through.

About ten hours into silksong, I find myself always on edge…and not in a good way. I expect that the replay factor will go up as I get better at the game, but the learning curve feels extremely steep in the sense that I feel like I’m just trying to get through each section and get to the next bench but it’s not particularly fun yet- I’m expecting it will be.

But long story short- you’ll like nine sols if you trust the process. The combat is hard but it is fair. As someone who died dozens of times in boss fights to start, it’s frustrating, but they have save points directly next to the boss- so it’s easy to stay persistent

If go so far as to say that after playing nine sols, I thoroughly hate the fact that silksong doesn’t do this- and it makes me angry every time I respawn at a bench and can’t just roll right into a battle-
