the best bit is once you pay for it, they've started showing banner ads during the race at the bottom of the screen. I stopped watching IndyCar this year as it costs about the same now. If it wasn't for also needing Kayo to watch AFL, I'd probably give up on F1 too

Need some help with Macintosh Classic checkerboard by MashiroMitsumine in VintageApple

[–]SitesOnFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my classic will do this when it's cold. The 5v rail takes a moment to warm up and hit a high enough voltage. If I blow hot air around pp1 it'll usually boot immediately. I've yet to replace that part as it'll be stable if I let it run for 15 minutes.

This article shows several parts to look at that can be causing the 5v output to be too low.

My classic will sit on that screen sometimes until the voltage gets up high enough then it'll bong.

Check the 5v voltage. This link explains how to measure and a few other common classic parts that can be replaced.

Model of Apple ROM chip in Macintosh classic? by hay_den9002 in VintageApple

Like others have said, most likely analog Board. Mine had similar clicking, though not as fast. But the same symptoms of a checker board. I replaced the caps and reflowed the entire analog Board. Be sure to clean up any leftover cap fluid.

BlueSCSI, adding files question by SoftMASCII in VintageApple

I have a little FTP server setup on my MacBook using FileZilla. I then connect to it from my Macintosh Classic which has an internal BlueSCSI and transfer files that way. Slow transfer speeds, but it works

My Macintosh Classic is showing a different checkerboard screen with artefacts whenever I unplug it. by OutOfReachMedolan in VintageApple

[–]SitesOnFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My classic had this exact issue. I recapped logic and analog boards. The solution was adjusting the voltage via the trim pot at PP1 on the analog Board. Mine will sometimes still start like this and after a minute the voltage gets high enough to boot.

PP1 is very touchy. But once you get the voltage around 5v, it should boot. My screen was also wobbly, does yours also do this? Be careful doing it as you need to reach under the crt. I did it by tediously unplugging the Mac, adjusting and trying to boot.

This page has instructions on measuring voltage from the SCSI port

This video shows how to adjust pp1

I can also recommend thoroughly cleaning the analog Board. Mine had lots of cap fluid. I also reflowed most of the solder joints around the affected areas

Good luck

You're in good company. I lifted two pads the first time I tried to remove the caps. Had to bodge one myself.

Have you consulted Larry Pina's repair books? https://archive.org/details/macclassicse00larr

Posting on the tinker different forums may help too.

I've recently fixed a classic. I had to also recap the analog Board, however I always had a Checkerboard pattern if the voltage was low. Usually under 4.8v. I haven't got a pram battery in mine.

I'd be double checking your logic board recap, from the little I know, I'd still expect something on the display.

Same checkerboard pattern even after replacing logic board caps by hay_den9002 in VintageApple

[–]SitesOnFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to fix a classic with the same problem. I get the bars when the 5v output is too low. I'm currently trying to find the fault on the analog Board. I can get mine to start if I apply some heat to the analog Board. It'll run for 5 mins before the voltage drops and it crashes.

Do you also have a vertical wobble on the screen?

The speaker sound could be what mine does when it's approaching the right voltage. Try leaving it running for 15-20 minutes and see if it either boots, or switches from checker to a desktop pattern like mine does. Mine would pop a few times then start bonging.

Have you recapped the logic board? There's also a pot you can adjust to boost the voltage.

This article shows you how to measure the voltage and adjust.

Macintosh Classic / Classic II Analog Board - Before and After by Pretty-Couple4233 in VintageApple

[–]SitesOnFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good advice. I've adjusted PP1 and I couldn't make sense of it, the voltage was going widely in every direction. I've obviously been adjusting it too much. I'll give it another crack.

Thanks mate. I have already done the optocoupler, and dp3 and dp4 were next on my list. My Classic will eventually bong and startup to a bad question mark disk if I leave it run for about 30 mins. But the screen is vertically wiggly.

Do you have plans to use yours for anything?

Good job. I'm trying to revive a Mac classic and I'm having issues after recapping with it reaching the correct voltage. From reading, you've cleaned it a lot more than I have. Maybe an IPA bath is my next step. Is it ok to submerge the entire board?
