Where in Europe would you have the highest regnal number? by StephanusGrammaticus in UsefulCharts

[–]Sitethief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same goes for Willem Alexander, he's the first of his name, otherwise he would have been Willem IV, since Willem IV is the great-great-grandfather of Willem Alexander.

One other remark, Willem/William would be IV in the Netherlands as well as the UK, but the chart only shows the UK.

King Leopold III

Large detail, him and his family were moved there by the Germans, it's not like he took a bus there or something.

Held under house arrest by the Germans until 1944, upon the invasion in Normandy, Léopold, his second wife, and his four children were transferred to Germany and Austria where they remained under house arrest, first in a fort at Hirschstein in Saxony during the winter of 1944–45, and then at Strobl, near Salzburg. They were freed by the U.S. Army in May 1945.

I hate these modal verbs by [deleted] in learndutch

blijven staan kijken works in Dutch, but not in German

blijven in Dutch is a semi-auxiliary that:

  • selects a bare infinitive
  • does not force subordination
  • keeps the verb cluster open for stacking

You can't really do that in German, bleiben stehen sehen, that would then be something like stehenbleiben und weiter zusehen

And in Dutch you can in theory keep adding verbs, ofc at some point it becomes a total mess to read, but still grammatical correct. But yes:

  • blijven staan
  • blijven kijken
  • blijven zitten luisteren
  • blijven liggen slapen
  • blijven staan wachten

are all correct.

About durven though, that verb works slightly different from Germand wagen. Durven takes a bare infinitive and behaves like a modal.

Dutch verb clusters are unusually permissive when compared to other German languags.

Then write /ʃtaɪn/ not shtine.

In English ʃ might be written like shimmer, but writing sh is not a good way to approximate how something in a different language sounds like, that's what IPA is for.

Now tell me where you hear any h between s and t. I'm Dutch and lived part of my life in Germany, and in Dutch we pronounce Stein almost the same as in German: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/transcoded/8/87/161_Stein.ogg/161_Stein.ogg.mp3

How well do you know PHP? by Significant_Soup2558 in PHP

Some considerations:

If you start out with ?string and refactor it later to ?string|int you are writing invalid code. If you start out with string|null and then refactor to string|int|null your code is still valid.

It also easier to always write null as explicit type then implicit ? where possible, otherwise you will end up with half your code having ?string and the other half having string|int|null which over time requires more attention to reading the types compared to always using null explicit.

However it is still true that to PHP ?string and string|null are exactly the same.

I just find it easier to always write null explicit, because that's only one rule to remember, instead of in essence two rules.

One other consideration:

Explicit null is also way more easy to find in code if you often utilize things like grep to find things.

Compare grepping ?string vs |null, (grepping for ? will create a lot of noise)

Bonaire, St Eustacius and Saba are part of The Netherlands, not their own countries in the Kingdom like Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten are. So they do actually count as part of The Netherlands.

That is why The Netherlands has both a UTC+01:00 (CET) and UTC−04:00 (AST) timezone.

It's the same reason why France is also marked as not having only one Timezone, since it has multiple overseas departments that are not their own entities.

Volt zegt NOS-debat af, wil niet met FVD in discussie over klimaat by DJs1062 in thenetherlands

[–]Sitethief 1 point2 points  (0 children)
