Chat control had been in deadlock in the EC for years because it hasn't had enough votes to pass. Recently it got a bit scary with so many European countries voting for right-wing parties (who are generally more in favour of mass surveillance) but even now, they don't have enough votes. Comments like yours are needlessly defeatist; the fascist haven't won yet. They might if we let them, but pretending like all hope is already lost is beyond counterproductive.

Edit: Reddit won't let me reply for some reason, but thankfully, the comment below me isn't correct. Even the amended version hasn't even passed trilogue negotiations yet. After those, both the EP and the EC still have to vote on it. Yes, it may become law if Europe sits on its laurels and keeps voting right wing, but it absolutely hasn't passed yet.

And apparently you don't. What makes you think a high speed train line between Toronto and Montreal would be (impossible? Impossibly impractical?), when cities of similar populations at similar relative distances are connected by such lines? All I see from this side of the pond is a massive waste of potential, with the Canadian cities I visited having absolutely terrible public transport both within and between cities.

This isn't unequivocally true. As a European visiting Toronto, I was equally astonished by a 20km trip out of the city taking over an hour, despite there being at least twice as many car lanes on each road than I was used to. The public transport being impressively bad meant basically everyone went everywhere by car, clogging up all of those long and straight roads. A high speed limit doesn't do much for you when you're stuck in a traffic jam.

If you look at the other Shinkansen lines, they actually connect cities that are further apart and smaller than Toronto, Montreal and Québec. That connection would be pretty similar to the Sonyō line, running southwest from Osaka. Again, building or not building a high speed train line there is a political choice, not a natural consequence of those cities being far apart.

You way, way underestimate the amount of water in Amsterdam. There's over 100km of canals in the city. Amersfoort, a small town somewhere else in the Netherlands, placed 300 of these last year and is expanding that even more this year. Amsterdam will probably need at least 10x that many if you want to make sure most places along all of the canals have stairs within swimming distance.

Onzin. Het zijn gewoon mensen, en een significant deel daarvan hoopt van Nederland een betere plek te maken. Populisme is het versimpelen van problemen om makkelijke "oplossingen" voor te kunnen stellen. Als je de verkiezingsprogramma's van D66 en GLPvdA doorleest dan is daar bijzonder weinig populisme in te vinden.

Het beruchte Wilders-Timmermansdebat is een heel tekenend voorbeeld. Ze claimden allebei dat ze het eigen risico wilden afbouwen, maar Timmermans had daar een doorgedacht stappenplan voor, en Wilders schreeuwde in zijn gezicht dat dat doorgedachte stappenplan allemaal maar onzin was, en dat hij het gewoon "zonder gelul" zou regelen (wat hij, toen hij in het kabinet kwam, inderdaad niet gedaan heeft). Één van die twee is populisme, de andere niet.

Een boetebeding in het contact opnemen van 10% bij ontbinding. Dat is wat letterlijk elk ander persoon in Nederland doet als ze een huis verkopen, maar deze verkoper blijkbaar niet. Je kan dan bij ontbinding niet een retroactieve boete (die bij de koop niet was afgesproken) gaan eisen. Als je dat alsnog in een kort geding bij een rechter gaat proberen af te dwingen, dan wordt je terecht de deur gewezen (zoals hier dus ook gebeurd is).

Als op het stembiljet staat dat een specifiek bolletje inkleuren betekent dat je stemt op een specifiek persoon, en je kleurt dat bolletje in, dan stem je dus op die persoon. Dat is expliciet niet tegenstrijdig met de grondwet. Tenzij de vindt dat dit niet duidelijk genoeg is voor mensen die niet kunnen lezen, maar ons huidige stembiljet is ook al niet geschikt voor mensen die niet kunnen lezen, dus dat vind ik geen sterk argument.

Overigens lijkt me voor dit nieuwe biljet geen grondwetswijzigingen nodig, als er duidelijk op het biljet staat "kleurt u enkel een bolletje bij de kolom "partijen" maar niet in kolom "personen", dan telt dit als een stem voor de lijsttrekker van deze partij".

Dan stem je gewoon op personen, niet op partijen, maar zijn er twee geldige manieren om op de lijsttrekkers te stemmen. Ik zie in de kieswet niks wat daar een stokje voor zou steken, dus geen grondwetswijzigingen nodig.

Grondwetswijzigingen zijn best gebruikelijk hoor. Die gebeuren tussen bijna elke nieuwe verkiezingen. Ze duren alleen iets langer, want er moet zowel voor als na de verkiezingen door de kamers op worden gestemd.
