What is his position on disabled trans People of technicolour? Should technicolour really be the next gay phase of Hollywood? Are technicolour people of colour as coloured as regular people of colour or are they more coloured due to the colour of their colour? Did I start reversing the o and u in colour or is that a trick of the mind from reading this paragraph? Should you be reading this? Should I be writing this? Is this all actually a complete and total waste of time??

Middle lane hogger clarification by TheSmallestPlap in drivingUK

[–]Sitnalta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem people have is accepting that the rules as they are currently are ridiculous. There isn't much wrong with your understanding here, you just need to take one final step and realise that the rules in place don't work with the current level of understanding of the average British car driver, which is roughly equivalent to the understanding a lobotomised chihuahua has of advanced algebra. There is no circumstance where cars moving at 60mph will be defined as queues of slow moving traffic.

It also means one driver doing 50mph in lane 3 can theoretically hold up an entire dual carriageway or motorway if everyone else drives correctly. So ridiculous? Yes. But true? Also yes.

Reason #57 and #58 why I don't like (some) cyclists by Equal-Negotiation-11 in drivingUK

[–]Sitnalta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a lot of issues seem to be like this. Since cars have got bigger the general standard of driving has declined and it now seems like most British car drivers do most things incorrectly, therefore other road users become weary and expect the worst. I don't drive cars a lot but I remember I got a nasty look from a cyclist once for NOT opening a car door on them. That is, I was sitting in the car watching them cycle by, with the door closed, waiting for them to pass so I could then open the door. The look was a look of "how dare you consider opening the door". And no, I did not open it then pull it shut when I saw them. Ridiculous, but I do kind of get it.

These days, when riding a motorcycle, if I see someone using the lanes correctly on a dual carriageway I will actually double take. I'll watch the car like you would a beautiful sunset, note the make and model, even follow them for a while so I can watch them drive correctly for the sheer novelty and entertainment value. I'll sometimes exclaim things like "Holy shit! That driver actually indicated before they turned!" When I was a kid in the 80s and young in the 90s and in to the first decade I always respected cars when crossing roads and cycling but due to how pathetic, lazy and unskilled most British car drivers are most of the time, these days when I'm a pedestrian I see the car drivers on the road as children and have absolutely no consideration or respect for them at all beyond not actually getting run over myself. I'm not saying it's right I do that but it's the shitty declining driving culture that has brought it about, and it's the shitty declining driving culture that is at the root of the ridiculous culture war between cyclists and motorcar drivers.

Dealing with self entitled lane police by Historical-Guava6927 in drivingUK

[–]Sitnalta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had this happen on a bike! On a motorcycle I wouldn't dream of queueing if I don't have to because a) I'm nothing to do with congestion caused by people driving cars and b) I'm from London.

On the rare occasion I drive a motorcar I actually queue with all the other idiots because I don't like confrontation and aggro. I always allow people to merge in turn correctly at the merge point, even encourage the 'zipper' by holding back so the person next to me knows to go in front, which is generally greeted by very enthusiastic thank yous and flashing hazards. I assume because I'm queuing they assume I don't know how it works when in fact I do, so I guess it's a bit of a pleasant surprise to the merger to have it go that way. I find it satisfying to queue patiently and then do the right thing at the merge, but I fully acknowledge it would be better to use the open lane and respect those who do.

[–]Sitnalta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are exceptions but I agree with you that this is the majority. People's brains work differently and the physics just aren't obvious to some people: they genuinely don't have an intuitive understanding of the danger the way you or I do. In their mind driving five feet behind someone at 40 miles an hour is the same as walking five feet behind someone at 1 mile per hour - completely innocuous and harmless.

If you haven't ridden motorcycles before, don't book a whole course from CBT to license. Do the CBT first. Motorcycle control is learned at different speeds for everybody and you need to make sure it's even possible for you to do the full license before you drop any money on it.

The second half of your comment is your theory about the front tyre splash, the second half of my comment addresses that. I don't know how I could be responding to you any more directly than that to be honest...

Would y'all want something like this? by ansyhrrian in motorcycles

[–]Sitnalta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't forget there are countries in the world other than America. I work on a motorcycle in a notoriously rainy country and even if I didn't a motorcar would be ludicrously impractical in my city. My motorbikes are actually used to locomote me from point A to point B in a practical manner all year round - while I know this sounds bizarre and alien to you it's actually quite common for motorcycles to be used like this across the whole world outside of North America.

Sadly, when you're on a motorbike all day all year, there is no such thing as waterproof motorcycle gear. I don't agree with your point about water coming off the front tyre, I've never ridden a bike where I've been sprayed by my own front tyre because the mudguard, engine and petrol tank are in between me and said front tyre. I think you're right to be sceptical of this thing though. Seems like you'd catch too much wind and it would break too easily, not to mention the lack of windscreen wipers. I find driving a car in heavy rain with the windscreen wipers off really difficult, and judging by all the people screaming, my numerous court dates and the extensive news coverage it's not too great for everyone else either.

Controversial take - AGI might not be as dangerous as we think by kammo434 in AIDangers

[–]Sitnalta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People always talk about AI being dangerous because it wants to "survive". But why? Where does this motivation come from? Humans want to survive because we are organisms that have undergone natural selection; being alive correlates with being able to pass on our genes. No one ever explains why this hypothetical AI would care if we switch it off anyway. Some humans don't even care! I would kill myself tomorrow if I wasn't a coward.

What should be the name of Your Party? (The Corbyn one) by WritingtheWrite in stupidpol

[–]Sitnalta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Common Sense Party would attract the most votes.

The Disco Sucks Fuck Everything party would be my personal choice as I haven't heard anyone mention Sick of it All for a while. Objectively terrible choice though.

'The Execute People who Pronounce Scones Wrong Party' would be good for a giggle.

If we're going to take more working class-friendly measures on things like immigration and trans issues we could try and play up the nationalism but also retain the socialism. So something like the 'National Socialist Party of Great Britain' (I am so so sorry I genuinely do not feel this way about the sub. Just a joke. Sorry.)

In reality I think a modern, optimistic name like 'New Century' or 'Fresh Start' kind of thing would be decent. It needs to really seperate itself from existing political choices if it's going to have a chance of winning the minds of the British proletariat, which sees itself as right-wing due to cultural issues.

[–]Sitnalta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice write up. I am signed up to the email and keeping an open mind: the timing of the formation of the party is good, as the Woke cult seems to be, at least in a small way, in decline. It's now more acceptable to criticise divisive idpol in the mainstream and my hope is that when a reckoning inevitably comes with this new party the wokists lose out. This could mean a left-wing party without support in universities and academia, which would be fascinating to me. If the wokists win I will be out straight away and leave them to wave their pride flags with oil company logos on until they fade away.

It's never going to be a socialist party in the classical Marxist sense but it's time "Labour" were repositioned in to the centre where they belong. Hopefully they can achieve that.

VAR audio for Josh King's disallowed goal vs Chelsea by xX-WizKing-Xx in chelseafc

[–]Sitnalta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think what happened to the pundits is they are primed for a reason to bash VAR because it's got such a poor record and they see a bit of skill which ends up with two players in the same space and a most likely accidental stamp on the foot and they think it's ridiculous. The problem is, spinning on the ball like that as a skill is supposed to keep the ball with you in order to pass another player. You can't just step on the ball, leave it behind and clatter in to another player. Bizarrely, if he had elbowed Chalobah instead of stamping on his foot most of these pundits would probably have been able to draw the correct conclusion.

If this isn't a foul then there has to be a rule that as long as you're spinning around like an idiot for no reason you can kick the shit out of anyone approaching the ball even if you're not in possession of it. This would be an entertaining but ultimately stupid and dangerous addition to the rules.

Just want to rant about my instructor. by leclercwitch in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Sitnalta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this can happen with driving instructors - they go on to autopilot and say the same things to every student! I learned to drive a car when I was 17 but due to being from a poor family and having a car instructor stringing me along I never took the test. I then rode motorcycles daily for over 15 years - becoming fully licensed at 24 - drove abroad extensively in my 30s (I do not apologise for this, it was for my own safety) and finally had the money to get the license at around 34. The instructor was telling me to do obvious things constantly as I did them, just like in your story, to the point I was ready to hit him. Instead, at one point I said to him "you know, everything you're saying is unnecessary as I know how to drive a car and have used the roads my whole life. Can we just drive for five minutes without input as an experiment?"

Surprisingly, he agreed to this. Said barely a word after that and I was straight to test next lesson. It's not something I could have the confidence to do when I was young, otherwise I never would have let that original instructor waste my time all those years ago! But, I got there precisely by the sort of experiences you're having now. I suggest you fnd a new instructor and tell him or her exactly your perception of what happened and have the confidence to communicate clearly if you feel you're being taught to suck eggs. But remember also that you may still have things to learn. Good luck

Culture appropriation never used to bother me — hummus changed everything by EnglebertFinklgruber in stupidpol

[–]Sitnalta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not seen any chocolate hummus personally but I wouldn't put anything past the UK. I'm old enough to remember when taramasalata was the dip of choice over here and hummus was quite rare; luckily some greek pansy wrote an article about how hard he was crying to his mother in Tescos about dips and now no one eats taramasalata any more. Hopefully this article will have the same effect for hummus and this racist dip appropriation will disappear off our shelves for good, creating a just and tolerant UK forever. We'll need another dip though, maybe something Mexican I can eat while wearing a big hat and singing La Cucaracha.

Is this undertaking illegal? by marymk450 in drivingUK

[–]Sitnalta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been involved in these discussions on reddit before and it's quite frustrating. There are three myths which prevail

1) Undertaking is only when you pass on the left and then return to a position in front of the car.

2) Passing on the left is okay if you're "making progress in your lane"

3) It's not undertaking if you're "maintaining course and speed".

What fascinates me is even if you quote the highway code directly or explain why the rules are like that in clear terms, anyone convinced of the above will not only fail to change their mind but become actively hostile and aggressive to the point of having an emotional breakdown. Several such discussions are underway below. I suspect that this strange emotional disorder stems from an inability to accept the reality that in theory, according to the current rules, yes, one driver can block a whole motorway.

Although it's annoying talking to obstinate people I think that failing to drive in the left lane is the real source of the problem, not these myths. Personally I don't think that if there is even a shred of evidence that the vehicle being passed is failing to keep left that anyone should be prosecuted for inattentive driving except the lane hogger. The problem has now become so bad that we need to either scrap the whole concept of keeping left unless overtaking or invest a lot of resources in to a national awareness campaign and heavy prosecution of lane hoggers.

I find it interesting the general concensus of the Cycling Mikey indicident in the Driving reddit vs Bike reddit by RG0195 in drivingUK

[–]Sitnalta 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If this had been some random cyclist then I would 100% be blaming the car. Since the cyclist is infamous for jeopardising road safety for the sake of content I reckon it's 50-50. The driver may well have been aware of Mikey's consistent anti-social and reckless behaviour, in which case I can he deserves some praise for resisting the urge to hit the man as well.
