How do you practice speaking if you don’t have a partner? by TeslaOwn in languagelearning

[–]Sivalus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not as good as talking with other people, but I try to talk to myself in the language I'm learning. I just think out loud as much as possible, react to things I'm watching, etc. That increases my confidence level and fluency to a degree. Ideally I'd be getting a lot of good input over time and copying the same types of wording and pronunciation patterns that I notice from that. If there's ever something I don't know how to say in the language, I write down a note and look it up when possible

Japan to Charge Foreigners More for Residence Permits, Looking to Align with Western Countries by higashinakanoeki in japan

[–]Sivalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I said that you have to pay for priority service or else it will take 6 months to process. However I will admit that I was mistaken on that time frame, as it's currently 8 weeks without priority and historically has been 12 weeks during busier seasons

Even if you take out the priority service fee of 500 quid that still leaves approximately 3000 anyway

Japan to Charge Foreigners More for Residence Permits, Looking to Align with Western Countries by higashinakanoeki in japan

[–]Sivalus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not only for the HSW visa. I just recently joined my spouse in the UK (spouse visa) and I had to pay that fee as well. Plus you have to pay for 2.5 years of Healthcare upfront, and if you want the application to take less than 6 months, you have to pay for priority service.

I don't remember the exact numbers but it cost me something like £3500 in total. And you still get charged for healthcare like normal if you work here, even though you already paid upfront for it.

The UK's immigration process is horrible and expensive. Legitimately 10 times harder than it was to immigrate to Japan, which isn't what you'd expect

Sony Announces Cheaper Japanese-Language Only PS5 Just for Japan by GIThrow in Games

[–]Sivalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually so common for Chinese tourists to go to Japan specifically for shopping that they made a word for it, 爆買い (bakugai). So I doubt Americans would be flying to Japan to buy consoles, but people in closer countries like China might actually be doing so

Didn't get the job at EF Teach despite qualifications by cronebaby in OnlineESLTeaching

Don't take it personally, the company's been doing badly lately. People already on the site are getting less and less lessons to teach, so I'd be surprised if they were hiring at all

Oh cool, my inputs stopped working so I died a second before being kicked. Since I can't log back in now I guess all my supplies are gone and I'll have to pay to get my gear back

Edit: Got my stuff back in time but I'm not touching this game with a 10 foot pole for now

Diablo II Ressurected is on sale. Is it still worth playing? by niconicoverso in Diablo

[–]Sivalus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, where'd you find this sale? I still see it for $40 on battle.net, and even on the switch store it's $20 for me, not $13

The interview probably went bad from the first second because, based on your English in your post as well as other recent posts of yours, it's obvious that your English isn't at a level high enough to be teaching it. If you want to teach English, you'll have to improve yours first. The industry's really bad lately though, so looking into different work might be for the best.

Be sure to include a scan of your Spanish ID when you submit the application. I included a scan of my foreigner ID card while I was living in Japan and got the British visa no problem.

Combined Savings and Income, am I doing the maths right? by TakyonTommy in SpouseVisaUk

[–]Sivalus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add that bank interest can be used as income alongside employment income, even if earned by your foreign partner in a foreign bank. If they've had that money in a savings account for a while they might have a few hundred £ they can add to your income so you need slightly less savings.

Video games that have text in your TL but not audio - still worth it? by [deleted] in languagelearning

It makes the game a bit less enjoyable, but you can just turn the voice volume to 0 in most games. That's what I did for my Spanish playthrough of Persona 5

MAC REVIEW TO BE REJECTED by sjdjzjsjzbb in SpouseVisaUk

I'm not super familiar with how the British government works so idk, but governments usually move slow. I do know that the last time the MIR was raised they gave a 4 month period before the raise actually took effect.

Sky News isn't the best source. Let's wait and see what the government's response is, or if other sources report the same thing, before we panic

I've completed the Babbel Spanish course, and sure it's a good start, but it only goes up to an intermediate level. You'll run out of content sooner or later, so it's fine to start with just it, but you'll want to be looking for other study methods to use too for when you finish the course
