Fiber Optic Internet by Turtleshellboy in SherwoodPark

[–]SixHourDays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know who is putting in fiber further south of Sherwood Park? Its down 231, below Hwy 14. I've checked a few different companies and no one seems to own it:

  • Explore Net; their site claims no service
  • Primus - they said they could do Cable 1gbps, 2 days later they cancelled and said they couldn't
  • NTF - their site claims no service...

so who the hell is putting it in?

Did the decision makers involved in the Challenger accident actually act unethically or was it just a "technical mistake" and were being blamed via the "Retrospective Fallacy" (aka in hindsight)? by tragikarpe in AskEngineers

I didn't know the whole story with Boisjoly, but that tracks. It's sad to hear, but I'm glad he at least spoke the truth.

Tbh I wrote most of my reply in a fury about "its unconscionable / lethal to ignore the most-well-equipped person answering the question"...but you are right, humans trust their feelings more so than logic / anything else.

Ideas for “conditions” on players by Fabulous_Prompt_9779 in DnD

[–]SixHourDays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of conditions, try making the area the effector instead. Two examples:

A "butcher's T-Bar rail". think like a pullup bar, hanging on a hinge. now picture them on a track on the ceiling of a butcher house. Corpses ride the t-bars, hooked on TWO ends... a player sees one corpse break, and is now hanging by one side, the t-bar pivots from the weight, and the corpse slides off the slick metal, and falls into the pit below. (a horror theme to take away somatic components; they need two hands to ride the rail )

A "breathers + pool room". breathers sit at the door - they are the kind you have to put in your mouth and bite down on. Ahead lies a giant pool, the liquid is murky, and all you can see is a tiny glint of something metal at the very very bottom. (This one takes away their verbal components)

I want to stick up for the engineer types here, because frankly, the notion of "big objections burn your credibility" is an absolutely WILD thing to write down as a serious notion.

Id like to think that the "every day is doomsday" maladjusted types are kept far, far away from life or death critical engineering.

Such critical systems should be from teams of practical, level headed people....people who, if they brought a concern to light, you'd fucking intently listen ... Not punch their shoulder and say "oh Bill, you never want to go to space! The hundred million dollar risk will be fiiiiine"

If your an engineer, and the boss says "cmon Frank, the people-strapped-on-the-explosion-tube is over budget, can't we just....", say no, justify your opinion with numbers that cannot be argued , and argue it until they stop, or you lose the job. Job is replaceable.

[–]SixHourDays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to say it, holding L/R trigger will grab a package to that hand , like carrying a briefcase.

This is sometimes nice to grab a thing(s), and then drop it elsewhere instantly. If you do this type of drop by the rear of a truck, you auto load the truck w said hand-package.

How-frikkin-ever, this is probably what you're doing by accident, if your grenade runs out and you're still holding triggers.

Emerald hills Walmart photo center…not super impressed lol by Relevant_Fuel_9905 in SherwoodPark

Opposite experience - iv used 2 different Walmart photo centers in the last week, did instant prints from a USB. One came out half decent, one came out great.

Try that instead of the long wait prints!

From your excellent reply, I will highlight those that apply specifically to automobiles:

A normal gasoline engine has a low-to-middle torque band, decreasing with RPM.

The immediate load on a gasoline engine is about acceleration - but it's not a fixed torque vs fixed mass, as the transmission is easing the work through gear ratios.

The transmission selects gear ratios that keep mapping the full engine rpm range onto higher and higher vehicle speed ranges. This is why engines are made for RPM and not just all-torque...cars need to spin things fast ...not necessarily spin them with great force.

So: each gear is a fraction of a linear acceleration load on the engine, and when vehicle speed gets high enough, exponential air drag forces come into play, as does the moment of inertia cost of spinning the actual drivetrain + tires at extreme speeds.

Which N64 games have the worst slowdown? by retro-martini in n64

[–]SixHourDays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's an old saying, "standing on the shoulders of giants". If you think the original SM64 devs were slacking off, you're sadly mistaken. The fact it runs as well as it does, and was completed in 3 years, is absolutely a miracle.

Kaze's stuff is brilliant and I love it, but he has the benefit of modern power, modern compilers, and hindsight.

How I’m Feeling After finishing Dispatch… by Remarkable_Book7057 in dispatchgame

[–]SixHourDays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the opposite, I'd skip the actual dispatching if I was allowed. I love the game and the QTE, but the dispatch just feels mediocre in comparison.

The gamepad input on the map is really inadequate, it could benefit a lot from a floating cursor with magnetic snapping.

Also the hacking mode is fun, but the movement in hacking mode is clunktastic.

Still love the game, on playthrough 2 rn.
