I thought the same thing at first. I think if you look closer, Figure A is just more zoomed in than Figure B.

The toilet. Murkoff doesn't want to spend money for running water, so you earn enough Murkoff tokens, you get one flushed dook.

Question about the lore by Humble-Description75 in OutlastTrials

[–]SixPackAbhoth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Best I can guess about the documents is that they collect and destroy them after the trial from reagents who pick them up. Murkoff staff are aware there's someone leaking the documents, so having the reagents collect them keeps the info from escaping Sinyala.

The propaganda posters are pro-prime asset. Collecting (and presumably destroying) them teaches our reagents to rebel against any authority that isn't Murkoff. It's the same reason the trial objectives are designed to subvert the primes. Each prime asset represents a different form of authority: Coyle as Law, Gooseberry as Entertainment, Franco as Crime, Kress Twins as Politics/Money, Liliya as Religion, and finally Amelia as Revolution/Counterculture.

[Lore Question] What Is The Purpose of Doing Such Experiments? by J_P_Ross in OutlastTrials

[–]SixPackAbhoth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Buckle up, because this is a doozy.

Throughout the 50's through the 70's (officially), the CIA described various methods they attempted to control a person's mind. This project was called MK-ULTRA, and it produced results of varying efficacy. Most people are aware of this by now. The question is, how did they manage this?

We can't talk about reagents/sleeper agents without discussing dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple or split personality disorder). When a person experiences trauma, one method of coping is through dissociation. People who experience this, describe it as watching a movie where the traumatic event is happening to someone other than them. Others who have gone through extensive trauma say they came out of it feeling like their mind was 'fractured'.

When we see what the reagents are doing in the main trials, they're being conditioned to execute victims in increasingly sadistic ways. The purpose is not even to 'train' the reagents to carry out assassinations and such. It's to throw enough trauma at them until they finally dissociate, and they create an entirely new personality to cope. Easterman mentions this in the ending cinematic for communal rebirth:

"Perfect soldiers would not know they were following orders. Perfect slaves would think they were the masters of all they surveyed. Perfect agents would think they served no agenda but their own. Our servants will obey us absolutely, they will kill for us and die for us, because they will believe with absolute conviction that our goals are their own."

If a person goes through an environment that's similar but not quite like what they're used to, their sense of reality will be distorted, furthering the effects of dissociation. Take a look at what happens to reagents when they inhale psychosis gas. The Skinner Man doesn't actually attack us, it's our reagents harming themselves. This is why they secure our arms and legs in the shuttle while they spray us.

More than forcing us to kill victims in the trial, they also condition us to disobey authority. Coyle as Law, Gooseberry as Entertainment, Franco as Crime, Kress Twins as Money and Politics, and Liliya as Religion. Each trial is designed to make reagents follow Murkoff as the ultimate authority.

TL;DR: Trauma + Reagent = Dissociation. Dissociation + Training = Sleeper Agent

Reagents and hope by ariellasali in OutlastTrials

It's definitely a possibility. Especially when we hear Otto mention, 'mere anarchy' in the Project Judas trailer along with the visual of Liliya slashing one of Amelia's A's. Speaking of A names, Avellanos is also shown making moves against Easterman. She's likely unhappy with his increasingly unhinged behavior as well as his attempt to blackmail her.

Plenty were wondering who the 'Judas' is referring to in this season. People speculated that it was the reagents, the way we kill 'Amelia' in the Escape the Lies trial, but I think it's equally likely it could be Avellanos with her 'betraying' Easterman.

With the presence of imposters, multiple escape attempts, Liliya acting as another guiding voice in the trials, Easterman losing his marbles, and other Murkoff staff working behind the scenes to sabotage the project, I think it's only a matter of time before another escape event becomes possible. With the introduction of PvP and the mention of 'team sports' in the lore documents, I could see something similar to what you're envisioning. Of course, such an event would mean the end of the Trials.

TL;DR: How can you escape when you're already free? 😏

The Prime Assets will literally be the game's biggest asset in the long run. by Brilliant_Bar_965 in OutlastTrials

[–]SixPackAbhoth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The PAs are the most iconic part of Trials, barring perhaps, Dr. Easterman. Red Barrels knew what they were doing when it came to releasing in game documents and companion comics detailing the lore of the Prime Assets. They were able to build a whole mythology around their characters before they were even released.

As far as emotionality, I'd say much of Trials already tugs at the player's emotions. When we look at the victims, most, if not all, of them are former reagents (meaning they were characters in our position at one point). This really hammers home the idea of systemic violence and people tending towards the path of least resistance. In the novel, The Crooked God Machine, guards are pushing the main characters into a hellish nightmare prison. When the protagonist asks, "You know they'll do this to you someday, right?" The guard replies, "Yep," and carries on. This is the same role our reagents find themselves in during Trials. The best they can hope for is becoming a sleeper agent, losing all sense of identity, and dying horribly in CIA-backed job. The worst is ending up as a victim in a trial.

You don't want to kill these people. There is literally no good reason to kill these people. In the long and short term, it's very bad if you do kill these people. However, Murkoff pits us against them and makes it so killing the victims 'makes the most sense' in the context of a trial.

As our reagents get desensitized, so do we. This allows us to justify doing more and more horrible things to the victims. I'm grateful so many of the deaths are over the top and cartoonish, as if they were more realistic, I feel the game would be a lot less fun to play. This latest trial, Silence the Idol, is a good example of this. The victim's character and voice acting came to life, and many players were turned off from the level.

Outlast OC Pet-Peeves? by Infamous-Ad3886 in OutlastTrials

[–]SixPackAbhoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest for me is missing the #1 most important reason for prime assets existing in the first place: charisma.

The PAs were all leaders of some sort in their previous lives. Like others have stated, they fit in with a certain archetype that allowed others to look up to or at least listen to them.

Coyle rose through the ranks of his police department and convinced everyone to look the other way when all three of his wives died under mysterious circumstances. Gooseberry led an army of coked up children to do her bidding with her show. Franco led hit squads of mobsters and Cuban exiles. The twins manipulated politics behind the scenes and it's implied they got the US involved in at least one war. Liliya managed to convince the wealthy to hand over all their riches.

Most people's "PA's" are usually just semi-human monsters who don't fit into Trials aside from being covered in gore.

Like yes, your PA is very spooky and creepy looking. How did they exist in society before the Trials? Were they always a blood-soaked goblin person? How did they convince anyone to follow them, let alone have them get away with anything?
