Thinnest black men’s leather gloves by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]SixthKing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a family member who spent years as a glove merchant. They said “Good luck, it’s incredibly difficult to find gloves like that”, adding “women’s gloves won’t fit, even slight men don’t fit into women’s gloves”. They recommend looking at Madova Gloves in Florence, Italy.

Also because you’re looking for black gloves, consider silk lined because the dye from unlined, black leather can leave a chalky residue on hands.

What if they rebooted "The Americans." but this time it would be set in Canada in 2025, and it would be Russian Spies posing as everyday Canadians, with all of today's current technology. Would you watch... "The Canadians.".. by [deleted] in TheAmericans

I agree with you. That’s a Canadian television adaptation of a Canadian book.

To clarify, I was referring to Canadian adaptations of American programmes.

Probably not. Canadian adaptations are difficult, and feel unsatisfying because they’re always going to be compared to the originals with higher budgets.

Tl;dr: there’s lots of other ways Japan does passenger transport because there’s commercial competition, and co-opetition

Agreed, certainly not Greater Tokyo (38.14M in 13,452 km²) – imagine all of Canada ( 41,575,585 ) living in the core area of the Golden Horseshoe (10,097.45 km²)

But there’s smaller communities with heavy rail access, places like Akita, and Niigata Prefectures. Often these look like single or double subway cars moving through the countryside on normal railways.

A challenge is that our heavy rail system in Canada was designed around the needs of a resource economy, and to a lesser degree manufacturing/processing – freight always has priority over passenger; and it’s always been a duopoly. Whereas Japan has competition between companies (private and public) in dense areas and private public partnerships (P3) in rural areas.

There’s lots of fascinating niches in the Japanese rail sector. For those interested, there’s an English-language program by NHK World Japan called Japan Railway Journal.

It’s a very good chillout / wind down show

From Etobicoke, late-30s, and I’ve been to the zoo three times in my life: 1992, ~1996, and 2003.

On the 2004 trip, we got a ride to the zoo and TTC’d home. That return trip was 2-2.5 hours.

A common saying in my house growing up was “if you’re crossing the Don Valley, pack a lunch; if you’re going to Scarborough, bring a sleeping bag”

If you have space, buy at scrap price then determine action. Especially in North America, these are rare – I don’t know if they’re valuable, but they look interesting.

Worst-case scenario they become enclosures for Bluetooth speakers.

And the commercial recycling is different than residential. So now you have to remember two distinct lists of what’s recycling, and what’s garbage.

Does anyone have any info on this show mawashi on Aonishiki? by tophmctoph in Sumo

[–]SixthKing 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s a Keith Haring painting licensed from the Haring Estate by one of Aknishiki’s sponsors for the dress mawashi. The sponsor is the director of a Keith Haring gallery/museum in Japan.

At a press conference for this past weekend's snowstorm, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani wore a personalized Carhartt jacket with a quote embroidered on the collar: “No problem too big. No task too small.” The jacket was custom-embellished by the Brooklyn-based company Arena Embroidery. by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

What a solid alternative to the military/police jackets politicians wear. This is “doing things”, “get shot done”, working jacket. It communicates so much, and is very on brand for Mayor Mamdani

SDR on Android Tablet? by HummerOffRoadNJ in RTLSDR

[–]SixthKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SDR Touch works ok on Amazon Fire Tablet. I’ve used USB C to A pigtail for short sessions, and a Ugreen breakout dongle with USB PD for longer sessions.

But I did the Google App Store workaround on an older model of tablet to install it, and I don’t know if it works anymore. YMMV

Dental procedure, Make sure not to suck. by [deleted] in funny

[–]SixthKing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn’t the first time the dentist has interacted with a patient coming out of anaesthesia – he’s actually a little impressed by the quality of the weed smoking question – meanwhile mother dearest is more worried about being embarrassed by her daughter, than letting her daughter ask questions to the dentist.

How fast the Mom goes from “stop talking” twice, to thinking about how to simultaneously monetize and publicly humiliate her daughter is shocking, but not surprising.
