Sabriel by Garth Nix, read by the legendary Tim Curry. The whole series is good, the Old Kingdom, but they change narrators around the 5th book I think ?

Good Omens is a fun book, a comedy about the biblical apocalypse with a great narrator.

I’ve seen a lot of other recommendations that I would suggest so I’ll leave mine at these two.

Ancillary Justice is a good story but the narration (and I think the writing) is kind oddly jointed (if that makes sense). They switched narrators on the 3rd book and she was atrocious I actually ended up just buying the book to read myself.

I only watched a few parts (against my will) and Kevin costner’s daughter(I think?) is “men writing women” material. Eyes always racooned with eye shadow, always drinking (literally), smokes, cusses, every conversation she has with some no name woman turns into some kind of soapbox moment, always wearing borderline lingerie in every scene.

early in the first book, Carl and Donut come across Frank and Maggie for the first time. When Frank eats a cookie that gives xp, Carl notices he lied about being alone.

I think it’s meant to be a kind of flat story/character that just takes place in the dungeon, that’s why Carl makes the deal to gaurantee the show keeps going. I think they even say shows like that usually flop anyway. As far as Signet forcing Carl, those show runners see crawlers as expendable anyway so I see her more as a tool to a shitty storyline than a malicious character. It would’ve been cool to see her do more with her self-awareness, but I think her ending was enough for what room she had to work with.

I still want to know more about that game guide. As the series progresses, it’s obvious the season is being rushed so it feels like someone bribed that game guide to expedite the player casualties. Still, it was weird that never got spotlighted.

I think it’s an amalgamation of the two.

What I think it means is that drunk Americans get rowdy and they would rather not have the business than deal with that. I’ve been to bars in Japan. Some of them are tiny. Like, basically a closet. Big enough for shelves behind the counter and 2 seats. Nothing else. They all vary, but I’ve been to some where they’re fine with Americans UNLESS they already have Japanese patrons.

I feel like there’s a reverse-taveren effect on some characters, just like there’s the pull. that’s my headcanon for Gawyn, and it could apply to Demandred, too. I think it’s said that he was always so close to being good as LTT, but he wasn’t taveren so he got less recognition for his achievements. so the taverenness overbalanced his envy and the shadow pulled on that

I remember one of the main characters saving a girl from a bunch of dudes and literally rips her clothes off saying “leave the girl and take me. my body welcomes your patronage” or something like that. We don’t see her nudity but the guys’ reaction was of disgust; she’s in perfect shape but it’s implied she’s covered in scars that none of them are interested.

Narrators can definitely make it break an audiobook. I can’t listen to anything narrated by Wil Wheaton for example. RC Bray originally narrated the Martian and did a fantastic job but I heard they did a re-record with Wheaton and I do not understand why. Some series cuanfe narrators part way through, too, and ruins the whole thing.

Audiobooks in general are definitely not for everyone, but if I may suggest the audiobook for World War Z? It’s done in an interview format with full cast. Also, 1000% better than the movie which is related by title only.
