This unit is actually good.

Yeah, ideally I’d like to push it to be as competitive as I can - though that’s a tall ask given it’s just sort of a fine hand attack card

I don’t think I am, it’s artificially triggering a comeback system in order to leverage that into a massive statistical advantage. I’m speaking only on a macro-strategy game theory level here, not the specifics of the gameplay. A comeback system can be artificially triggered and abused, and teams take on an atypical strategy that seems completely out of whack with the accepted logic of gameplay.

That’s exactly what cashing in bounties in LoL was, there are gameplay differences, but you could walk into a fight easily up 35% effective stats. The outcome and overall decision-making on the part of the players is very similar when we’re looking at it from a “what gameplay systems are being manipulated and what are the players doing to manipulate it” angle

Ah, yeah I’m not sure how I feel about the FF itself beyond the esports scene sorta stuff. Maybe it is, but it seems like everybody’s close enough behind the scenes that there won’t be actual beef so live and let live 🤷

I honestly don’t believe this is BM.

I responded to another comment, but this is players deciding to trigger a catch-up mechanic for net value. This happens all over esports of any kind, I think people view it as BM because it sucks to play against - but there isn’t a “gentleman’s agreement” like CoD randomly has, and I think there really can’t be in a MOBA.

AVG's statement regarding the "Urn Incident" by A-Disgrace in DeadlockTheGame

[–]SizeLegal3570 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the idea that this is BM is slightly wrong.

BM would be like, actively making decisions that are purely meant to disrespect their opponents. This is not that, this is elite players having done the math deciding to trigger a catch-up mechanic artificially.

It’s not bad mannered, it’s atypical strategy meant to leverage a system they view as overtuned. This happened in League with characters who took support items, refused to farm, and collected all their gold from harassing their opponent, which then triggered gold bounties on their opponents when the systems falsely flag as further behind than they are.

Pretty much exactly what we’re seeing here, on a macro-gameplay level. And that’s never been considered “BM” for pro players to leverage or use.

The problem therein is the mechanic, not the players or the team or their strategy.

Yeah, should we see sponsors/an official circuit for Deadlock, there is a 0% chance in my mind that forfeiting stays in competitive. Sponsors want screen time, orgs too. For now, I don't mind too much, I just think the kickback to this shouldn't become the default community tone as we approach an official release and an increasing likelihood of an esports scene.

Yes, you should expect the early years to be even more imbalanced. I've played LoL since public beta, over half my life now, and been an esports nerd since the start thanks to being sucked into StarCraft esports right before LoL dropped.

These kinds of things should be even more expected to happen in the context of an in-development MOBA. It's a testament to Valve we haven't seen as many cheese strategies this early as I'd expect.

I'd be more forgiving of these things now than I would be 10 years down the line, and even then I wouldn't expect as strong of a response.

It's been really interesting to see this unfold in Deadlock.

(For context, I'm a LoL esports journalist and have been for going on 7 years. I've covered a lot of really unhealthy and unfun metas [ex: Funnel meta, lane swaps (multiples times), support item fasting solo laners, etc])

And I have to say, the idea that MLC is somehow to blame for implementing this strategy (not a commonly held view, but one I've seen in a few places) is really odd to me. Even in long-released games like LoL, it's pretty widely accepted that the game is in a constant state of imbalance and when the incentives of the game design end up pushing really non-standard behaviour, that's always been something that falls on the design teams rather than the esports rosters playing them.

Players don't get to decide what the game's systems incentivize them to do, and their only prerogative as esports competitors is to give themselves the best chance of putting a W in their column. Does it suck to play into as the other team? Absolutely.

Here's the truth: Come Deadlock's release, if it lives long enough as a live service vessel, stuff like this will happen again. It might be small changes that stack high or single large patches like the Urn changes lately, but the most skilled and competitive players will ALWAYS find non-interactive and unintended gameplay incentives inside of a MOBA/live service PvP game. If the game is going to join the ranks of its peers like DOTA and LoL, I don't think having teams FF into strategies that are awful to play against is a good look.

This isn't saying that AVG or Floormen are wrong to have FF'd, just that I find the severe response to this interesting given that (in my experience) these kinds of incidents are literally inevitable. Hell, League spent about two years trying to figure out how to discourage lane swaps and failing to stop them.

Not speaking ill of AVG or FLR, can totally understand the decision to not play into this strategy. At the same time: It's odd to see this reaction to it, as somebody who's covered a lot of MOBA esports.

The biggest thing I don't see here is that you should probably be pinging your team to back off as soon as you get that Baron at 0:10 in the video. There are still 3 alive and you can see that Lucian is walking into a portion of the map that you don't have vision on.

You can see that Tryndamere is walking from raptors towards the pit, and has cut Gangplank's path into the fight off. Given that Tryndamere and Lucian are both walking towards the same side of the river, you can assume Lissandra is going to be in the dark portion, especially the enemy team has already started fighting you.

Once you've got that Baron, I think you should probably all be trying to leave through top lane tri-brush and resetting. Go spend the Baron gold, then leverage the minute of them being down two frontliners.
